  • I've just received the answer to my question from part one. Nicholas Winset was NOT tenured. As such, the only recourse he has is sour grapes. It sucks, but without tenure he's like the kid in the mailroom of a big company: by saying things the management does not agree with, he risks being fired. Or better yet: as non-tenured faculty, he's like a grad student with a PhD - vulnerable and dependent on the whim of his superiors.

  • free speech, for born free people.

  • I support your right to say whatever you want to say. Its down right anti american to fire you because you wanted to share an outside diverse viewpoint. Also, I feel you are a decent guy. Please don't let this put a chink in your armor.

  • I have attended Emmanuel College for three semesters and I am becoming increasingly infuriated by its censorship and "we know best" attitude. I wish I had been at the school when this all went down because I would have protested. Ridiculous.

  • y'know the old west you could carry a gun with no permit at all and if people did that today I think as soon as the guy walked in and started shooting he would have been filled with holes before he even killed anyone

  • Hope this guy gets his job back, and excuse and a salary. He should be credited for speaking truthfully rather than normative.

  • I like this guy.

  • Rather than asking questions Emmanuel College appears to have behaved in a manner closer to a lazy sophomore cribbing a paper off the web than an academic institution pursuing knowledge. And while Winset may not have chosen the most sensitive manner to demonstrate his point, it certainly sets a dangerous precedent to fire him. In the long run, imagine what will be lost if professors are forced to muzzle their ideas because of the politics, ideology or even feelings of the administration.

  • "One bleeding-heart type asked me in a recent interview if I did not agree that 'violence begets violence.' I told him that it is my earnest endeavor to see that it does. I would like very much to ensure — and in some cases I have — that any man who offers violence to his fellow citizen begets a whole lot more in return than he can enjoy."

-Jeff Cooper, "Cooper vs. Terrorism", Guns & Ammo Annual, 1975

  • "The most head to head comparison of weak vs. strong gun laws, of course, is between states in the U.S.: states with tough gun control have higher murder rates than those that don't."

Glad this was pointed out. Weird when the murder rate of a few states exceed the national average. DC had the strictest, but that didn't keep it from becoming the murder capital.

    One for the road......

  • "What would happen if it accidently went off, or if someone used it because someone said the wrong thing to them?"

Most states require a firearm safety course in order to obtain a permit to carry, permit holders are more responsible to than the average citizen, and no one is saying you have to own or carry a firearm. If you don't want to that's your choice.

  • "As far as permitting civilians to have guns on campus... you obviously don't know college students - a third are on meds. and seeing shrinks, plus they get drunk and high often."

Do a little research on federal and state firearm laws concerning ownership and right to carry.

  • VIDEO COMPILER sounds like Cheney and the rest of the arogant deaf administration, afraid of reasonable discussion of controversal issues -- issues perhaps important precisely because they are important!

  • To "theinvestor"

I feel as though I have only heard the "professor's" side of the story....I would very much like to hear the "student's" side...I think you have a right to be heard and hope you will have the courage to speak about what occurred. People need to hear your story.

  • FleurDeLis2003 .....have you ever heard the term POST WHORE before?? BTW, you are WRONG as the professor was fired because of HIS PRO GUN OWNERSHIP stance in a pathetic LIBERAL ASS college! Thank God our founders had the foresight to create the 2nd amendment. The 1st amendement means NOTHING without the power vested in the people through the 2nd amendment.

  • hi - 1st, sorry for the multiple posts but I had a lot to say. second, could you send me the college's statement that says that the professor was fired because of his pro gun ownership? because everything I've read from EC has said the professor was fired because: the school prohibits "any behavior or action which makes light of or mimics the terrible tragedy at VT." if you have some other information I'd love to see it.

  • Lastly, if you want to talk about prissy-ness or victimization or self pity -- just watch this video because that is why it was made, I don't feel sorry for you at all for being fired. Go Sister Janet!

  • Fear is a natural reaction when something of this magnitude occurs in a setting that would normally be considered safe, like a classroom. Classrooms are not Iraq. Classrooms are supposed to be safe environments. No one may have seemed particularly bothered by his demonstration but obviously parents and students were, or else the administration would not have taken the action that they did.

  • I agree with Professor Winset that more kids die every day in Iraq than those that died at Virginia Tech. I also agree with Professor Winset that kids have a better chance of being hit by a car than they do of being shot in a classroom shooting -- especially in the Fenway neighborhood of Boston. However, just because those are the facts does not mean that students did not have the right to be upset about what happened at VT or afraid for their own safety the day after the massacre occurred.

  • I find his discussion of the issues with the Catholic Church equally as ridiculous as his accusations that he was fired as a means of censorship. I am not Catholic and I never once felt like I was being preached to in anyway or that the views of the Catholic Church were being impressed upon me in anyway. Additionally, neither the Catholic Church, nor any other religion for that matter, was ever once discussed in any of my classes other than the theology classes that I chose to take.

  • It seems as though he was not let go because he has a different point of view than that of the college or the Catholic Church. It seems like he was fired because of the insensitive manner in which he discussed the incident at VT the day following the massacre.

  • In a statement released by Dr. Wall, a philosophy professor, EC "has a broad sense of academic freedom and encourages the discussion of controversial issues, as long as the discussion is carried out in a fair and civil manner. This was decidedly not the case in Mr. Winset's class." The college asked professors to discuss the issue with their students and did not instruct them on what views to present.

  • As an Emmanuel alumna, I find it Professor Winset's claims completely ridiculous. Emmanuel College is an extremely liberal college that encourages discussion about all topics -- controversial or not. Professor Winset proves this in his YouTube post by contradicting himself and saying that Virginia Tech is not the most controversial topic he's discussed in his class -- topics for which he was not fired for discussing.

  • In this YouTube post, Professor Winset claims that he was let go because he expressed his views that gun control does not always work, and idea he claims is radical in the city of Boston, and that if you are confronted with violence you should respond with violence.

  • The college released a statement that Professor Winset was fired because they believed his classroom demonstration of pretending to shoot students with a marker the day after the worst school shooting in the history of the United States was a "behavior or action [that made] light of or mimic[ed] the terrible tragedy at [VT]." The college stated that EC has "clear standards of classroom and campus conduct, and [they do] not in any way condone the use of discriminatory or obscene language"

  • There is a real disconnect presented here between the reason the college stated that they fired Professor Winset for and the reason that he believes that he was fired.

  • sick that he's fired

that shooting was the real world...

people fired him cause they are scared for the true

  • This kind of proves how fucking hypocrite and stupid Americans are - AGAIN. Of course except for the ones who agree with me.

  • Maybe the method was a bit dramatic, for all you softies out there that do not realize what kind of world you are living in, but it was done in the middle of a group discussion, so all present in the room knew what was being discussed. He didn't just walk in and go "Pow Pow" w/ the marker.

  • Yet the news media blasted, for us to see everywhere we looked, a young man pointing guns at us from TV screens and News photos, just 2-3 days after the VT shootings? And a college fires a professor for trying to get his students to think and talk about something the administration told him to discuss with the students?

  • prissiness- good term.. afraid of NO- You cant DO That..College students think their special. and are being dumbed down. so give them a cell phone and tell them to call their therapist.

  • Emmanuel College pride itself on creating independent critical thinkers, yet fires those who do just that. As an alumni of EC, It sadness me to see the college deny this professor a review of his actions and get fired via a letter. It also sadness me for future Emmanuel students and staff who will have to censor their ideas and thoughts in fear of the administration. I am hurt and discouraged by this firing, and will not be making a financial contribution to Emmanuel's next appeal.

  • There's a certain romance to fear. You don't want to say it, but it's a feminization of our culture.

  • Well, lets look to the UK for the results of a pretty much overall weapon ban.

The British Crime Survey: violent crimes involving knives in 2005/2006 was, at 169,000, around half the level of 340,000 in 1995, though it had increased on 2004 - 2005 and had been rising since the previous year

There is little doubt that gun crime, particularly handgun crime, has more than doubled since 1997 - again despite legislation, in the form of a post-Dunblane ban on handguns.

  • This is just one more example that show how feak and weak is your american dream. Is this freedom? I'm really glad to live in europe, the authentic life dream.

  • No one should have access to guns because it's safer for me when less people have guns. From common sense, the probability of me being saved by someone who bought a gun legally is far less than being shot by a crazy mofo who bought the gun legally. Professors alike inspired me to think for myself. I hope Emanual College shapes up from this incidence, and that this professor will get a deserved review of his actions. Students should dispute with the College for this wrongful firing.

  • your "common sense" is flawed. the majority of gun crimes are committed with illegaly obtained guns, and used in an illegal manor and often in illegal areas. take VT for instance. college campuses are "gun controlled" areas. the one person that wants to shoot people HAS A GUN. gun control failed right then and there.

  • is point is a good one because I beleive to an extent that if there are less guns there are less chances of you being shot with one.But if someone shoots someone for instance if more people have guns they have to fear being shot back at for their action.... just a diff angle to look at it.

  • this video has the rocket seal of approval

  • You're problem is that you are a white male. Bad thing to be in this country now...........

  • This firing and the way it was done is representative of terribly bad human resources management. Has anyone in the department taken HR 101?

  • Professor- these are a sign of the times we live in. When moral relativism flys out the window. You have made many good points in your vBlog.

Your situation is most unfortunate, however at the end of the day you have your dignity in knowing you spoke honestly. And, you have qualified at least one person's ideology as well. I hope that your story is shared, as I assure you Emmanuel College is not the only place where free thought and ideas are oppressed in the US.

  • Fuck conservatives and their prissiness.

  • I think you meant Liberals. Liberals are Anti-Gun and they surely dont want you to stand up for yourself or others. Liberals like passive obedient subjects who believe and do everything they say. The professor here is expressive and teaching conservative views. Gun control does NOT work, and if more people could defend themselves and others then these mass shootings would be few and far between.

  • mass shootings are few and far between.

  • ahahahahaaa that's a good one, thank you for the chuckle.

  • I think the Professor was right. This is America and he should have been allowed to lead an open discussion. He did not threaten or scare anyone.I think the people who fired this guy should be sent to Iran or North Korea where freedom is supressed. They would fit in real nice in a place like that! We live in America not some dictatorship.

  • Lord, what a boring voice and manner of speaking. The students may have complained hoping that they might get a professor who could hold their attention in class.

  • If he was an afro-challenged individual, this would not be an issue. WASP have no civil rights.

  • I have been a fellow classmate of the video speaker, after reading the Herald article, watching his video and overall judge of character, I believe he has been taken out of context. Also, I don't feel that as an accounting professor he should be asked to play role of guidance counselor, let the liberal arts & social class professors discuss this, bring on conservative arts!

  • What's absurd is that this country will back Ward Churchill, the professor that basically called all the workers in the World Trade Center towers that were killed on 9/11, "little eichman's" and that they had it coming to them. This obviously does not even begin to approach Ward Churchill's statements, yet they decide to back him tooth & nail, what hypocrisy.

Cho has brought more down with him if you ask me. Cho is the one to blame, even in his death.

  • GOOD LUCK PROFESSOR!!! Cant believe this college was so ignorant in this situation. Wake up people the world we live in, a.k.a. "The PC Utopia Facade," is not real. If one follows the sheep, one gets mowed down with the sheep. It's sad that expressing an opinion, or discussing an important topic can cost someone their job. It shouldn't be that surprising though, after all the world is flat!!

  • Is he a schmuck? Yes. Should he have lost his job? No.

  • The video and the comments all seem to take one or the other side on whether this was free speech or not. It was free speech and it was stifled.

Were the professor's comments appropriate or sensitive? Maybe not, probably not. I wasn't in the classroom and have only his videos as input. Based on those alone, it would not seem like there should have been this much fuss, much less his summary dismissal by some invisible administrator with no opportunity for review.

  • explanantion? all you did was blame everyone but the person responsible for your situation. YOU!

just by your body language and affected speech/speaking, shows you believe yourself to be in the wrong. no matter what words you use to try and prove otherwise.

  • I agree with you and support you in your decision to uphold your beliefs.

  • Good for you for presenting a truth devoid of prissiness. I'm about to get my PhD and dread going into teaching for this very reason - I'm probably not prissy enough to make it without getting into trouble all the time. Good luck!

  • It is a sad day in American education when a professor can not raise an issue during his own class without being blocked by the Human Resources People. Had this man been disciplined by a facility committee it could have been seen as acceptable. But the way in which it was done was a huge blow against academic freedom.

  • I agree with you one million percent. I am very sorry that they did this to you, but I applaud you for having the courage to go to class and say what has to be said. Your marker exercise was excellent. Congratulations.

  • One of the arguments that people who are madly in love with guns use is: being armed will prevent the government from taking over and repel foreign invaders. How does this argument jibe with the fact that under Saddam, every Iraqi male had a gun? Didn't stop Saddam from being a dictator or prevent the country from being invaded. Just curious.

  • So whats taking so long to disarm them? All they have is small arms. I believe we are witnessing just the point you made.

  • I don't know what makes me want to see the entire planet be destroyed more: the incident that precipitated this, or the comments from the pathetic humanity here. Please, please, please let a large asteroid strike this earth and destroy this entire planet.

  • you are in an asshole! What do you mean you think the students who told on you were failin the class and just wanted the grade? you are a jerk and deserved to be fired. your not even discussing the real issue you keep trying to talk about everything else. "should we teach everyone to be afraid", "Im not being a prissy". How about how you brought up a sensitive issue and involved the actual procedure. What if someones family member died in the shootings. You are very brave to do such a thing.

  • It sounds like you were telling the students what this event meant to you, instead of listening to their interpretations and feelings on the matter, which, given the circumstances, might've been a better idea.

    Lastly, segue pronounced "segew?"

  • Thank you for your well-thought-out and logic-based reply. Much appreciated, even if my ears hurt from all your shouting.

  • I first thought that they were killed with a riffle. That could explain why he wasn't rushed that easily.

I wish a CCW was sitting in that class room. I'm a CCW and I would not have coward like sheep. Thank you professor for putting the devil on front street. Again good luck Sir.

  • Hmm, I hope you're OK with the Left-led plan to:

1-Stifle all debate that doesn't march goosestep with Left's line (paging J Lieberman).

2-Exploit Cho killings (not a gunman, a murderer) to disarm US populace with more gun control laws. Everyone knows the first step towards keeping folks in line is to make sure only the government has the guns (paging Herr Hitler).

3-Keep peasants down on the plantation, sucking at government's teat. Yes'm, Miss Hillary, we knows what'chu talks 'bout.

  • You don't have the right to act out murdering your students. Especially in an ACCOUNTING class. He can say what he wants to as long as it does not infringe on the right of others. I wouldn't want him teaching my children ANYTHING. He is entitled to his opinion but he shouldn't have imitated killing students. He shouldn't have said the lives lost were insignificant. Professor FIND ANOTHER CAREER - I am sure you could write your opinions and be paid for it.

  • I agree with you Professor. If one of the people in the class room had a gun on them, then there might have been a lot better out come. And yes, you should have freedom of speech, and you should have never been fired for it. Stay strong!

  • You were justly fired. You need to seek counciling. The students didn't deserve those disgusting and disgraceful remarks you made. I wish you had made them in front of the students who were killed you ignorant pig. So those deaths are igsignificant because they are white? You deserve a broken nose, and I hope one of the VT parnets gives you one.

  • You forget that he asked everyone in the class if they were okay with the exercise. Plus the student that complained was one that was failing.... you must not have been paying attention to the video/reports

  • sjdien,

You are not paying attention to the overall story. One failing student in the class has nothing to do with the ovearching theme. The teacher was way out of line with his comments and actions, ergo he was dismissed. End of story.

  • Colonialineart,

No one said college was easy! Everyone has different views and opinions on every situation. His 5 minute lecture was to get the students talking and debating. I would hate to be in a college where everyone had to think and believe the same thing. Thats the problem with todays society, and people like you....you are close-minded and ignorant.

  • No my dear friend, I just know the difference between right and wrong. It's wrong to call the murder of kids "insignificant," in any context. Anyone who can't figure that out is truly ignorant.

  • This is exactly what's wrong with politically correct America. We fire professors who address tough issues but tolerate freaks like Cho Seung Hui.

  • Hmmmm, I see there's a Black Student Union(BSU) at EC, HUELLAS (Helping Unite Latinos to Lead and Achieve Success) and a Multicultural Club, but no Rabid Native American Club. Maybe you could start one.

I don't think BSU or HUELLAS will give you back your sovereign lands either...

    Performing Arts:

  • What you did was completely in poor taste. He said the shooting at Tech was insignificant. I would dare him to say that if his class was VT students. I would hope he was not fired for his promotion of our civil rights - but, pretending to shoot students was just perverted. THAT WAS TOO FAR! You have the right to your opinion... Pretending to shoot students is about as tasteless as acting out the events of 9/11. Some things you just don't do.

  • Why does no one mention that "BANG!" is the name of their literary magazine. If going bang with a marker is a firing offense, go fire the literary staff with him. Multi cultis only think it's acceptable if your "BANG!" is against white men.

  • Honestly, that's what you get when you try to be a free speaker at a Catholic school. Apply for a public school where they don't put down free thinkers.

  • Excessive reaction by EC. Reminds me of the junior high kids being prosecuted for a hate crime because they put a ham sandwich on a lunchtable where there were somali students eating.

  • Clinton and Carters policies, especially the pro gay legislation has demasulated men in the US. Nobody fights back anymore, that is all the these shooting proved. The liberal media along with the defeatocrat congress has turned America's men into whimps. Vote Republican in '08, and lets arm our students with physical defense training, including safe handgun use for those who LEGALLY want to have a handgun.

  • Unfair to the students because they paid for a full course?

They paid for a full course in *accounting* not politics and gun control.

  • Maybe "they" or "their parents" paid for accounting, but some one has to bring the truth to their ears. The media, parents, teachers, etc.. are not going to speak outside the lines for fear of condemnation.

  • I may not agree with everything this man has to say but at least he tried to get the kids to open their minds to the reality of the world. We as Americans glorify tragedies like this. There are lot more tragedies in this world besides this that we don't even give a second glimpse.

  • Wake up America!!

  • The college adminitration were such chickens that they couldn't even tell him he was fired. This shows just how bad things really are at American colleges. It's sad.

  • I can't believe he was fired! It's such CRAP! Some schmuck in an office wanted to make an example out of him. :( It's not right. He didn't DO anything wrong...

  • Your Video is very informative. Sounds like your situation was an action by E.C. to please American "knee-jerk reactions." Good luck to you. Thank you for the praise to our fallen Soldiers!

  • The school is better off by starting a debat for wearing a gun instead of firing an open minded professor.

  • Academia is widening/opening your mind. I oppose guns (anywhere) but I do support this professor's right to speak his mind. Firing him was just poor/scared policy. If a university/college can not keep a climate that provides for an open debate/dialogue, what good is their education? This is just as sad as the firing of Don Imus over some "nappy headed hos". Where is this country heading? To utter political correctness?

  • the only country where a twice elected ape in a suit can send soldiers into a country to steal their oil, kill their citizens with strange chemical weapons that aren't even supposed to exist just because they're trying to protect their homes and then at the same time fire a professor for having the abhorrent opinion that when attacked one should defend ones self instead of falling going catatonic from fear

  • The slippery slope to the loss of the exchange of controversial ideas. Don't talk about 9/11, guns, global warming or your government. Whats wrong with telling people to fight back? Do you want to die like a man? You can't stop this discussion, among others you may find insensitive. I have the constitutional right! God bless america.

  • now were getting somewhere! you go dog!

  • Good idea for the discussion. The classroom is a place of learning and should feel safe as you explained. Students were informed and sometimes topics are not what they want to confront but that is life. I wish you well on your battle for your job and please include a public apology from the school in your settlement acknowledging their attempt to promote gun control at the student's expense.

  • (Reality -- continued!!) And to ban the 19 weapons that were previously outlawed (& probably will be again by the lovely liberal government...) are EXACTLY the LAST weapons that should be outlawed.

Those are EXACTLY the weapons that you are going to NEED if you need to go up against your own government!!!

Wake up... Read the Federalist Papers you ignorant anti-gun types...

Also - too bad about the professor, since he's not only right on point on this topic.

  • The Federalist Papers were written in 1788 when white men like you owned slaves in America, and Americans armed themselves with muzzle-loaded, black powder rifles that did not spray hollow-point bullets in rapid fire.

  • Unfortunately (for England) a bunch of rag-tag Patriots managed to use THAT day and age's assault weapon to gain our freedom from people like YOU that want to rule everyone else's life and try and entice (force) us to think like you. Again - the Assault weapon is what you need to keep the government from taking away the rights that Emmanual College has just done. You probably feel safer on airlines today, too - don't you?

  • Why bring the problems of the Catholic Church into this issue? This was an accounting class he should have been teaching...and he claims the next class he was going to have a class on research...hello accounting doesnt include research...this guy is messed up thank god hes gone

  • No time to read ALL of the stuff but obviously a lot of good dialogue, & clearly a lot of people who have no idea WHY we have the Second Amendment in the first place... It's not to protect yourself from some two bit pissant slug in a classroom (although that would have happened if that Larry Hincker guy had not kept guns off-campus - he's gotta be proud now), but for all of us to protect ourselves & each other from our own government!

  • I'm still confused about the situation, but I'm probably not alone. Thank you for posting this.

  • Well said David.. Like the professor said this sends a horrible message to teachers everywhere that open discussion will not be tolorated! This man should be givin back his job and a apology!

  • Domboozoo, there is a point where "open discussion" in the WORKPLACE has it's limits.

And this guy found that limit, just like Ward Churchill did.

I invite you to test your unlimited "open discussion" hypothesis in YOUR workplace, k?

  • where did you go to school? Apples and oranges David!

  • He should not have lost his job for that.. all the other tangent topics are excess. Focus on the fact that a professor was fired by letter from HR for countering the fear propaganda..

  • 1 Students SHOULD be afraid

2 Kids are taught if a bully shows up don't defend yourself.

3 You are Jewish and 'rebelling' against the 'status quo' so to speak (like jpfo).

4 You touched on gun control and were AGAINST it, when the media is trying like mad to show how evil guns are...

I aplaude you sir. Good luck to you, wish I had you as a teacher when I went to school.

  • "Winset also said in the video and Sunday that the shootings were blown out of proportion by the media and the public, who have failed to draw attention to matters with greater long-term implications.

What a douche bag... But you know FOX NEWS will hire him as a "school violence expert"

NINE American solders killed in Iraq today.

  • Where did that come from, Dave? Winset made the very same point about Iraq. Watch the video before commenting.

  • Wait, nevermind. Just read a few of his other posts & it seems davemartin7777 is trolling.

  • Emanuel College was just trying to be cool.

They're punishment was way too harsh.

  • Some loser trying to get on TV by hurting this guy...Like I mentioed before people will hang another person without regard to anything. Alot of angry people looking to destroy others for a cookie.

  • Well, they didn't talk to you because you freaked them all out.

You reenact the VT MASSACRE! That was brave, and stupid, and TOTALLY PI. And now you blame them?

I applaud what you did, which, regrettably, was stupid.

  • Welcome to the politically correct 21st Century America. To put the killings in prespective, cars kill over 42,000 Americans a year, that is 116 people a day. Where is the outcry? Dont ever impersonate a person holding a steering wheel, they will put you on the cross for that.

  • Someone give this guy a talk show.

Even the VT students are getting back to normal. It's the politicians and drive-by media whores that keep beating the dead horse here.

Get over yourselves people. You're not the one who died, so you have no right to wallow in grief.

  • He's not Australian. He said he was from Jamaica and has a colonial british accent from when he was a kid.

  • Correction: Dot-heads are in India, and drunk-casino has beens are in government land trying to live their glory days of skinning each other. Whitey rules...always have...always will. Now shouldn't you be smoking your sister in some peacepipe?

  • I am really tired of "whitey" getting blamed for the Spanish buying slaves from black and arab people. Arabs and blacks were selling their own people to spanish merchants. Spanish settles the southern half of the united states. Northern whites freed the slaves. Read a book, you morons.

  • well put.

  • free speech is dangerous..we need to ban it! heheh..

  • I thought colleges were all about "diversity of ideas." Apparently not if it's non-liberal.

  • Yes, the poor man is only guilty of being naive, in this age of pc hysteria, litigation, and student opinion being king - a full-timer would have invited discussion but canned the wild west graphics (as I did). Campuses seek greater armed security. As far as permitting civilians to have guns on campus... you obviously don't know college students - a third are on meds. and seeing shrinks, plus they get drunk and high often. Imagine the weekend bloodbaths guys.

  • Yeah, college students are the last people we want to give guns to at this point..

  • Yup, work in one. You'd be amazed.

  • Liberals on here are pointing fingers at Republicans? HAHAH! What a flipping joke. It is the "PC" culture of the liberals that got this man fired, and they are going to point a finger at conservatism? This man was asked to discuss the matter, he did...and he was punished for having a frank discussion.

The fact is, you can't stop a dedicated person from killing you...no matter how much money you throw at security systems or expanding government.

  • I agree with free speech but point the pin and you say ham it up!! My God dude what the hell is wrong with you?!! You need to grow up a lot more!! Not to sensitive with victims of violent crime!!

  • >points a pen at students and says "pow"... six days after the largest mass shooting in American history.

    Oh, that's smart.

Fox News will hire this guy as a school violence prevention "expert".

  • I say we license pen owners and make them register their pens with the federal government. We create a 100,000 thousand person agency and call it the Pen Investigation Serivice or PENIS for short. These pen nuts and their ilk are the cause of all this pen violence. The NPA is the biggest lobby in DC and every communist bone in my body says they must go!

  • Lol, all that from another "Angry White Male".

No problem, when you American Fascists take over America you can do what every totalitarian gov. does... kill all the intellectuals and replace them with your ideological sockpuppets.

Guess what faggot and your PENIS... his ass WAS FIRED.

    Suck that.

  • Well, you certainly won't have to worry about being killed.

  • LOL yes that is definitely the case with that retardinal.

  • Yet another Youtube tough guy calling people names from the safety of his mothers basement. LOL

  • Good observation DRSNK, we do need an association to support pen rights! THE NPA!

  • This also shows how inappropriately people respond to being offended. The most sensible thing for an offended student to do would be talk to the professor and say "Hey. I was offended by that" and the professor would most likely say "I'm sorry. There was no offense intended, and I apologize". But no, the student went and whined about it to someone higher up. I think this guy was the only one who behaved properly in this situation

  • alright i think you are missing the point. no one was hurt and they all agreed to be apart of the presentation. Education is radical and should be. you should go to school to think and expand your tought process.he makes sad but true points and at the end of the day if you dont like what hes doing maybe you should sit him down and talk it out you dont send him a letter. but as we all know that is the way of the future we are becoming a society that avoids confrontation at all costs

  • Most jobs in America are "At will".

Pray that you don't have a Reich-wingnut Republican boss... he will fire you for an anti-bush bumper sticker.

Sorry, that's the way it is in America, if you don't like it join a Union... or just STFU on the job.

This guy will be begging the ACLU to take his case.

  • Shut up, moron. You know nothing of teacher "contracts" that can be terminated at will or not "picked up". These are usually renewed on a yearly basis... The teacher's union is one of the weakest unions around. It can keep a drunken moron from being fired from his position, but not someone like this... unions are pathetic. The ACLU can't do crap. More than likely a "liberal-minded" person fired him, by the way. Wake the hell up.

  • badsysop, this wingnut will be BEGGING the ACLU to take his case.

But I'm agreeing with you an one thing.... STRONGER UNIONS.

  • Sadly, the school can let him go at anytime. Its a contractual thing. ACLU won't touch it.

I'll quit the unjustified name calling (Sorry!) by just saying it is frustrating that folks don't know how weak the teachers union is.

If it was a black teacher getting canned, he could claim racism. A mere threat of an expensive lawsuit can get his job back. Sadly, this is how things work.

I challenge you to research our education system. You'll be as angry and disappointed as myself.

  • There was a time in the nation's history when we actually respected each others' right to express beliefs. No more! Those in control "hire and fire" decisions determine what dialogue is acceptable and what is not. Unions won't change this, it's corruption at the deepest intellectual and moral level.

  • It is the culture of progressive liberalism that is the corruption. It is a corruption of the mind that puts the views of intolerant islamists ("Cultural people") over those who are concerned with radical islam (fascist/racists).

Society in general has standards and I do not believe this individual went over that line. If, perhaps, this incident took place at Virginia Tech it may be unreasonable. But it did not.

  • God forbid a professor takes a risk and says something controversial. The whole point of going to college is to learn to think for yourself and question the norm — not to regurgitate what the media says or what you read in books. My opinion: students carrying guns is a horrible idea. But, I value the debate.

  • How overly sensitive do you have to be to get offended enough to fire a man because he pointed a marker at you? You'd think video games would be illegal as well if people are afraid of a marker. He wasn't saying shooting people is good. He was saying there are ways to protect yourself in that situation.

  • the fredom of speach is very important to me as a member of the media, as a college student i feel that if a professor offends me i have the right to take it or leave it i can exit the room and come back when i feel the need to. Also as a college student i feel that the students are cheated out of part of their education they paid for a service that they are not receiving, and that they should get their money back for the unused part of the class.

  • All you guys bad mouthing this prof. , you need to open your eyes and ears. this isnt about him or the shooting. Its about the freedom of speech and expression which we have thanks to our founding fathers. The problem is him getting fired because of an "action" that was in no way threatening to anyone . The ony person who could have been potentially injured in the ordeal is the proffessor for falling on the floor. Emmanuel Colledge should be sued

  • would it reasonable to assume that you had problems with the powers that be at your university BEFORE you were fired for this?

  • When on Larry King, please don't forget to ask them why events like at Virginia Tech arrouse the newsdesk people beyond any limitation. Way to go!

  • I got your point there. You teach in a society where violence has free reign. The whole media craze about the horrible events at Virginia Tech went over the top.How can you educate a whole generation using common sense and intellect, while the society is horny about violence and measurements against it?I respect your attempts to use your profession to voice some sense to the new generation, although most of this generation has stopped questioning.Code Orange for the educational system?

  • Well, dude. I wish you well. Your example was perfectly acceptable and this is nothing more than political correctness and fear of law suits. Anytime a student complains the school jumps. There is always a student to be offended even if they arent really offended. Its a matter of sticking it to their professors who they dont like. This school has failed you and the students. Our wishes are with you. Please get back into a university ASAP.

  • is it me or did his rambling make absolutley no sense? If he wasn't fired for the controversy of the VT shooting, it was for his mundane ramblings. He pontificates like a jackass.

  • If he was fired for what he discussed alone, it is ridiculous. He seems to have a pretty interesting point re: attacking violence. That's what Flight 93 did and they were commended for it.

More than likely, I suspect this guy was fired b/c of his interactive "kill-the-students" role play. It was pretty insensitive (though I'm sure this guy cringes as I type that) 2 days after the most deadly school shooting. I don't think it really added much to his argument, either.

  • Wow, being taxed for being White....does this remind anyone else of HITLER?!?!

  • i wish more people werent afraid to talk about things like this. i'd be interested to know exactly what was said but if brittney would have got on television and been like "what? im on drugs and crazy

... im workin things out, im sorry to my fans", maybe the media wouldnt have to speculate and make asses out of everyone. im a college student and i wish there was more controversy in the classroom, it enhances the learning experience.

  • yawn

  • Fired for being a white male with an opinion.

Keep lining up for liberal gunman like Cho, America!

  • Maybe they fired you for being boring... "BANG"!!!

  • This is ridiculous...I've been through 6 years of college at Indiana University and have had considerably more "extreme" conversations (anyone taken a human sexuality course or had a post 9/11 debate). the marker was, i'm sure, an attempt to ignite debate and conversation...a method used by many professors. Not to mention, I'm sure that there have been other much more questionable university discussions across the country and yet those schools haven't lost grip of their freedoms of speech.

  • . The method this man was fired is miserable and completely unprofessional. His comments about self-defense are not implying that people should be bringing guns to class but that he wishes people would be more self-defensive. I'm not sure what I would have done in a VT situation but this was an in-class debate on a touchy subject that should have never ended in his release.

  • This man's professional and personal reputation is now permanently scarred because of his new and unjust affiliation with the VT shootings and Emmanuel College seriously needs to review its methods and policies.

  • I fear for our right to free speech more and more every day. Firing a professor for expressing an idea that the university disagreed with is totally ridiculous. Universities should be a safe haven where students and professors alike feel free to explore any and all ideas without the fear of being censored.

  • the professor should know that universities are anti gun, even before the shooting. they are liberal institutions. logically some sane person packing a gun could've remedied the situation and shot cho. but this professor should realize not to speak in this way in his classroom. there's no way they'll ever allow someone with a gun on a campus unless it's security or an police officer.

  • No worries about finding a new job professor, FOX NEWS will soon hire you as a school violence prevention "expert" by the end of the week.

FOX NEWS more right wingnuttery rants from "angry white males" for a "Fair and Balanced®" debate.

  • Even more frightening is the pathology of the "angry leftist" who only knows how to attack people instead of the carefully debating a topic. I guess reason and logic have no place in the Politburo of the Left.

  • dave get some balls or go on the view

  • Sure farmarmy,

    Nothing like a tuff-talking "balls of a fruit-fly" bravado.

No doubt your dad was an anonymous "tough-talker" too, seeing that 13yr old girls were a physical threat to him also.

Thanks for your service in Iraq, btw.

  • I think you presented a very lucid and well-presented rebuttal to your firing. If I were in your place, I'm sure I'd be much more vitriolic on tape. I wish you the best of luck in fighting this.

  • Nicholas Winset is right in Kennesaw Georgia a while back the mayor made id a law that everyone in the city have a gun in there house hold and the crime rate virtually dropped to 0% thus proving that you can stop crime and violence with guns

  • You're right.

  • This guy is honest and very, very right when it comes to his view of the media promoting self-victimization and self pity and that you should combat violence with violence.

If a gun is pointed at me and I have a gun, I will shoot the person before I am shot to save myself as well as other innocent people around me.
