The muzzle takes up a huge amount of the recoil! On a M82a1 you can trash the gun by shooting it without the muzzle break. Good thing you were using a bolt gun!
I have been demonstrating the low recoil on the Barrett M82a1 .50 cal for the past three years by:
1. shooting it standing, (shoulder-firing)
2. shooting it with one hand, off-shoulder while resting on a table
3. shooting it with straight arms extended away from the body off shoulder.
I could be wrong, but I'm not entirely convinced, what's the ME of a 50 BMG, almost 15'000 ft lbf, and a 30-06 is almost 3000 ft lbf, it just didn't look like 5 times the recoil, could you put your mate through the pain again with a better camera? Cool video anyway...

@iviaverick52 Wait isn't the AR 15 lower receiver too small to even fit the .308? Unless your talking about the bolt action AR 30 which comes in either .308, .300 win mag, or .338 lapua mag. And theres also the AR 50 in 50 bmg. But the ar15 is too small and is also semi auto. Anyways you could also get the semi auto 10 rd barret for 8k on impact guns.com. Very expensive sport I'd rather stick with the m1a's, .338 lapuas, and my mosin nagant.
@endgamr Search tactilite t2 on google. It uses the lower reciever trigger group but doesnt use the magazine well. It's a bolt action with a 5 shot magazine extending out the side of the upper reciever. Since it's just an upper you can order one online and have it shipped straight to your door, no NFA dealer to go through. Also I was wrong they aren't $1,500, actually about $2,000.

@daybreak1HP Actually you can have a bolt action slam fire when closing the bolt due to firing pin problems, and the end result is a very bad out of battery scenario. Obviously though, it's not going to repeatedly happen on a bolt action(which would already likely be damaged anyway after the first time).

If I have a Glock in .357 Sig or .40 S&W, I wouldn't say that I had a Sig Sauer or a Smith and Wesson pistol; I wouldn't call my Savage model 12 in .308 Win. a Winchester rifle either. The only cartridge Barret has developed is the .416 Barrett. In addition, the Armalite AR-50 is only available in .50 BMG. Go back to playing video games kid.

And no, your father does not own a rare Armalite chambered in .50 Barret because there is no such cartridge; the only possibility (assuming you are not bullshitting, which I doubt) is that it is an aftermarket barrel off an M99, meaning it is not an Armalite factory barrel.

@RebelWrestler45 you can do that???? i was just thinking some kind of typo in the manufacturing proccess but he did buy it from the local pawnshop........i dont know, they claimed it was new and he got the orginal shipping box and all the manuls with it too so we belived it was new but if you could fit an M9 barrel on it then i think that would be the more likely cause for the confusion....

@PumaM12LRV a .50BMG has ALOT of recoil, i dont think this rifle was made to shoot without the muzzle brake, it dampens recoil. i dont think no one could shoot it with out it without getting hurt

@akshooter762 shooting the m99 or m95 without the break will not cause any significant damage to the rifle. however, using an m82A1/m107 without the break can cause massive damage to the rifle's semi-auto action. firing ANY .50 bmg without a break or other recoil-reducing device can cause damage to the shooter's shoulder, and can also cause the eyes' retinas to detach

@ELITEWAFFLES9 no, there are hundreds of different guns chambered in .50cal, including a bunch of ar-15 conversion kits. the m99 can be in .50bmg, .416 barrett, .338 lapua mag, ect. heres some examples of 50 calibers. m82, m107, m99, browning m2, tac-50, maadi griffin, aw50, as50, ar50, m95, dsr 50, ba50, m6000, rc50, bfg50, hs50, gepard50, m93, hecate II, windrunner, wkw wilk, m85, wkm-b, xm-218, xm312, gau-19, cis 50mg, and theres several others
