you can get gear crafted at 70 that gives +def and can be socketed. go with +def, dodge and stam gems and go frost. icy touch now gives more threat so spam it. get an addon called quickmarks which gives you a bar and makes it faster to mark mobs. enchant threat and stam and you can even enchant agility since it gives you more armor and crit.also make sure that you watch your healers mana bar if they are over 60% on trash you should be g2g.

I have been a tank for a bit now. If you want to be a tank you need to find either a healer or tank in your server and join a group with him/her so you can enter HC's uber fast... buy ur tank gear forom the main emeblem of triumph vendor - for Dk's you wont reach the def cap without enchants, runeforging/gems. I would go frost if you want to tank HC's or blood for raids. Not forgetting unholy for its amazing aggro collection on multi mobs.

You SHOULD get defense capped but let's be honest tanks only get booted when healers are whining about their hp, if you're a new 80 just stack stamina until you can get some better gear with defense, trust me, pug healers are usually pricks and won't accept anything with less than 26k hp for tanking heroics, being new to 80 is hell on a tank, I have an 80 healer and 80 dpser no one ever cares how much mana/dps I have, I just jumped straight into heroics on them, but not on a tank.

You don't want to stack stamina, you want a base amount depending what your tanking (IE, no more then 25k unbuffed is needed to successfully MT naxx 10 man) you want to stack avoidence, for any tank, avoidance > stam. kthxbai

Frost got no debuff except the armor bonus from the basic three that any tank should pick up. Not only that, but Frost got another talent that makes dual wield not only viable, but a very strong spec because Obliteration and Frost Strike hits twice every time you use it.

Hit 80 a few days ago have mostly quest and rep gear at the moment still working on it.

I went frost my rortaions pretty simple.

DnD-HB-BB-IBF

BB when Blood runes available to keep up barrier and AoE threat, use HB for AoE threat when available, Obl when its not and frost strike/rune strike for dumps.

I dont bother with plague strike and so i dont need pestilence. if its a single mob like a bos i simply dont use DnD.

Works very well for me at the moment.

Frost: Better AOE spells, more damage migration.

Unholy: Mostly a DPS spec, but can still tank.

Blood: Better at single target tanking, has nice spell to replenish life. IMO go for Frost spec. Always pick the 5/5/5 skillz.

@ Unholy and Frost for AOE: I think bone shield is a sort of Shield wall, and Ebon plague and other diseases are good for AOE. Unholy is more AOE and frost is just mitigation and raid buff (Icy talons & Acclimation for mage fights)

As a deathknight, you're able to tank with which ever spec you want. Some better than others.

Blood isn't good for tanking, but still possible. Unholy is decent, and frost is like the main tank spec due to it's aoe tanking abilities as well as tiny but crucial buffs here and there.

That's just how I feel about it.

i wouldn't say that blood isn't good. we have abilities that give us more health and also vamiric blood which gives +15% health and +35% healing recieved. we also got a talent that makes us take less damage at 35% hp or less. also talents that increase the healing done from Death strike, so i wouldn't say Blood is a useless tanker.

It should be noted that the dual weild talents are best saved for when youhave reached a high gearing level if you plan to tank. Hit and Expertise are verry important due to your off hand weapon having a higher chance of parry and this can increase the mob/bosses swing timer. This means more damage incoming to you, and more stress on healers. Stick with the 2 handers untill you gear geared and then try out the DW talents.

Def cap is 540. As a DK you don't need to worry about expertise and hit at much for tanks....you spec into it. Strength comes stacked in almost all your tanking gear and Frost Presence gives it the armor bonus pending spec (Bladed Armor in Blood tree).

As for specs....its all about what you like. I am 10-5-56 Unholy. It's the best AoE spec for a DK. I do just fine stacking stam personally....I am OT in 25 Uld and MT in 10 Uld. 550 Def, 32.9k hp unbuffed.

The main tank needs to concern themselves with survivability - Especially in Ulduar 25...

The most important thing with Main AND Offtank is mitigation, dodge and parry etc - This is because the tanks need to swap round so often because of the tank crippling debuffs (Such as weld armor on Rozorscale, or 20% debuff stack on armor for Kologarn) - A boss can easily 2 hit or 3 hit a main tank with 40k health in these encounters so dodge and parry stack is crucial +540 defence obv :D
