  • I just found you through reddit and have watched almost all your videos in one sitting. You're amazingly well spoken and an absolute pleasure to watch. Even if I don’t agree with all your points the way they are presented makes them easily digestible. Please, keep up the good work.

  • Are you implying rape jokes can't be funny? That obviously wasn't, but it's the principle of the matter! The little I did read\watch about DNF from sources such as RPS, ArsTech and even Giantbomb did complain about it being creepy and misogynistic as far as I remember. I don't really think this is close to as bad as the — at least on the surface — glorification of war in most modern fps games though.

  • I think 7:23 is when the best point begins. I've heard some of the other stuff discussed by other reviews (Ego bar contradiction, platforming/rail simplicity, etc), but this was a point I can safely say I didn't hear anywhere else.

I'm astonished every time I hear people who think that stuff like 'I'm here to kick ass and chew bubblegum' and the like are originally Duke Nukem lines. At this point, it's not parody: it's closer to flat-out plagiarism.

  • @Heresy488 I encountered a review that gave DNF a 7.8 and only commented on how "fun" it was and ignored the story stuff, and they claim they understand why it was released

  • I just want to say that I read destructoid for my game reviews and they actually made the same points you did. If anyone sees this and wonders where they can find good videogame reviews that actually point out these kinds of problems and use the entire 1-10 scale for scores you should check out destructoid.

  • Every review I read commented heavily on Duke Nukem's content and only peripherally mentioned the graphics and gameplay.

So I don't know what gaming media you're talking about - all of your issues were discussed and the game was condemned for the appropriate reasons.

  • Excellent commentary and criticism. Much needed for games as a medium.

  • Good speech!

  • i enjoyed the game

but the criticisms raised in the video are pretty much spot on

2 things are the cause of DNF

One is the absolutely ATROCIOUS writing done by the wives of 2 Triptych members who clearly arent good writers and missed the point of what Duke is(why a woman made fun of rape is beyond me)

And the other is its disjointed design whose blame can be put on 3DR

Im glad that i got to play the game even in the state that it came out

GBX is aparrently doing a reboot so i have high hopes

  • This video was sloppily edited and I didn't laugh at the poor attempts at humor! 5/10 stars, worst video on youtube.

  • @AARONMACKENZIE so a 50% is the rating of the worst video on youtube? you must not have seen many videos

  • @AARONMACKENZIE sorry, didn't finish the video before commenting

  • Wow, great video. I'm probably in the minority, but I would have preferred the video without jokes. What you were saying was interesting and amusing anyway.

  • The first half of the videos was just bashing at other reviewers with your POV...

but when you got to talk about the parody (Duke pretends to an asshole/bastard) becoming a straight attempt at crude humor (Duke IS an asshole/bastard), you were bringing quality content

this is really the most important point regarding DNF (and the humor in video games in general), and I'm glad you carefully explained it in details :)

  • Excellent critique! Thoughtful reviewers have brought up the point that the game is disgusting, (Like RPS, Killscreen, etc, and Giant Bomb refered to the Duke in the game as a "sad, mysoginistic, crazy, middle-aged has-been") though I agree that more mainstream reviews should talk about this as well.

  • Have you seen antisocialfatman's reviews?

Yes forumers, who are doubtlessly going to be here after SexBad's link, I know it's blatant advertising, but he's criticizing game critics and fatman was a great game critic (deceased).

  • You actually expect critics to have good reviews?

  • i agree with this message

  • "You can pick up 'Painkiller'"

Oh god no not that game again

  • I want to be your best friend.

  • Loving your videos, keep it up!

  • Duke Nukem Forever took a wrong turn... about 10 years ago. Any past mistakes is just the ghost of a mistake. In the end, what kills it is that it took so long to come out, the people who were working on it completely forgot why the crass of the original Duke Nukem was acceptable, or worse, that parodying itself was enough to keep it on its feet.

That and it drove back the maturity level of games in general about five years, undoing all the hard progress done in baby steps...

  • I can give the game reviewers a pass on this one. Why?

Because I doubt many people, let alone reviewers, got far enough into the game to actually 'enjoy' those scenes from the game. Or if they did, they were already running on auto-pilot and just wanted it to be over with.

Duke Nukem never took himself seriously, he was just too awesome too, until DNF. It's turned away from cheap shots and snide remarks and started pushing a drawing into your face like a 5 year old. Bad game and bad content

  • I just wanted to say I just watched every single one of your videos, and I'm really hoping you'll do more. Your kind of thorough, holistic reviews that don't just focus on graphics, but actually cares about narrative and art are dearly needed.

  • @colossus999 Indeed, games like BF3 has people thinking that graphics make your game good.

  • @colossus999 It's because this guy actually see videos games as an art, not some childish pastime.

  • what a shame.

  • I was just glad I got to play the "legendary" game. It very nearly never saw the light of day, remember? Quality in this case was completely irrelevant. Here's my thoughts on Duke if anyone cares to read: henrip.tumblr.com/post/13728378984/duke-nukem-forever-alone

  • @c0d3m45t3r It would have been better off not having seen the light of day, actually. I would have much prefered that they simply leave us with fond nostalgia of a decent parody shooter. Instead, our last memories of a franchise are ruined by a "game" with shit aesthetics, garbage gameplay, and is packed full with only the sort of filth and rot that appeals to virginal pubescent 4chaners.

I don't even believe in social constructs like "morality," and I agree with the vid. About everything.

  • I had no idea the game was so morally wrong since it wasn't brought up in reviews and I didn't play it.

Maybe that's because game reviewers don't actually play more than 2 hours of a game before doing a review?

  • dude i subscribed because you know what the hell you are talking about

  • YES thank you! I felt like people were defending this games morality simply by ignoring it. This game is absolutely reprehensible, and it felt like people were trying to convince me this is all meant to be funny. It's NOT funny, not in this light.
