The funny thing is, back in 1974 or so when I was in High School, a friend said Pink Floyd was coming to Providence RI. I had not heard of Pink Floyd yet. Another friend said he thought they were the group that did a version of House of the Rising Sun. He was thinking it was Frijid Pink. So, a few mistakes. I got some tickets and I ended up seeing of course Pink Floyd. I loved the concert and the experience and I got to learn about Pink Floyd. Love this though

Version I was talking about was 'Eric Burton and the Animals' in 1964. I have since learned that it is far older and known to have been recorded as far back as 1933, and could well have been written many years before.

Its actually older than that. Its one of my favorite songs to sing starting with a low bass growl and going up to a falsetto growl in the last refrain of mothers tell your children sung with the animals full version of the lyrics and finishing with the train boarding line of the lyrics in a very low bass & almost inaudible drawn out and plaintive @ dragin, these chains.

No Leadbelly didn't write it, but he also covered it. Roy Acuff did his version in 1938. According to all sources, the song may go all the way back to 1600s.

Just then they brought Mr. Burdon in & he stood right in front of me & my girlfriend- I said "Mr. Burdon ,you're the best"- he turned around -looked at me and said "Thank you." Then he saw the Frijid Pink drummer and jumped on him in glee!! They talked continuously for about 20 minutes right in front of me but I could hear nothing as the PA was so loud! Once he got on stage he worked that punk crowd into a lather! A great showman! PS I love this Frijid Pink version & guess so does Eric Burdon

There are many traditions of how this song got written. It was being sung in N.Orleans before La. became a State. There are about 25 verse's. One tradition says it was being played by mouth harp by a Mississippi trapper and sung by his wife and was picked up by the Cajun/Creole community and put into English from French sometime before Statehood. But that is just one of many oral tratidions for this song. Needless to say it is a very very old song.MJ
