If Russia were helping rebuild and pulling out of the occupied country at some point, you could compare it to the former Yugoslavia or Iraq. But Russia is not doing the same thing in Georgia. It is taking and keeping parts of a neighboring country for itself and destroying without rebuilding.
Peacekeeping missions (as Russia is calling the land grab) simply do not have those two properties.

S. Ossetia did not declare it's independence. Besides if it were independent it wouldn't be controlled by Russian troops (and it is). That is a completely incorrect statement.
S. Ossetia is part of Georgia on every international map besides the new map that Russia is drawing as it expands it's own borders using it's military.

It is a completely correct statement. S. Ossetia declared its independence first in 2003. Just because some countries choose not to recognize it does not nullify its existence as a sovereign nation. Russia, being good neighbors, gave them russian papers so that they could travel freely into and out of Russia. Georgia wants their natural resources. All Georgia will get is a big black eye complements of Russia. It would not surprise me to see Russia 'un-'declare georgia's sovereignty too.

Plainly put, Georgia stepped into a trap laid by the Russians. Russia is eager to prove America weak and it has done so.

Hey there its me there ol' buddy...well here's the deal...Georgia first claimed Russia shot down their drones, and since they couldn't look at peacekeepers positions they started sending snipers and other infiltrators which sparked tentions prior to Georgias invasion. Shakashvilii had this planned he just didn't count on the Russians to retaliate...which Russia did with a handful of soldiers ending this conflict with zero losses to their side but pushing Georgians back in humiliating retreat.

So I guess the question is not who but why and how this conflict began? Here's the answer, South Ossetia along with Abkhazia have pipelines which are filled with oil and Shakashvilii was desperate to make himself a hero by reclaiming land that is not rightfully his. Twice S Ossetians and Abkhazians voted for independence but were not recognized...now that doesn't sound like democracy to me and after killing 1400 civilians including 700 children well it really puts things in perspective.
