I've had a G3 since release and have replaced the mechanical cartridge many times. I'd rather use fiberfill or some other media. Any experience using your own media with a G3?
@mangoldm Only with the chemical medium. Why have you had to replace your mechanical? I still have the one mine came with. I got G6s pretty much on the release date, and still have their stock ones.
@AquariumTech thanks for the reply. My flow gets much better when I put in a new cartridge. I've never had a pleat tear, but they do get clogged. I only clean monthly instead of the recommended 2-3 weeks, but I'd be curious of your reaction if you installed a new cartridge.
@mangoldm Sorry im just not going to dish out the money for a new one. That brush that came with the filter is meant to get it unclogged. Also if that doesnt work, a good way I unclog it, is just hit it a bunch of times in the sink, you will be surprised how much shit comes off.
@Bricksmama Well the point I was trying to make is GPH has little to do with how "good" a filter is. Sure its how much water can be cycled, but just because its being cycled doesnt mean its being filtered. I also talk briefly about something call dwell time, in this video.
@AquariumTech I agree. I was just commenting on that point since you said you weren't quite sure how/why that figure is floating around. I think it's mostly something the filter industry started putting out there to dumb down the consumer and make it easy for one filter to appear superior to another, simply by turning more GPH. Great vids BTW. I lol'd at your UGF breakdown. They are popular with shrimp breeders but I just can't do it.
Hi I love your video's as a am a new comer to setting up a turtle tank.I just got a fluval 4. You made it so easy to pop the back on...well I can't do it and I really need help. Would you sent me private message and maybe you can help me. PLEASE! T TeresaMy turtle is a bruiser and she just knocks it off. I really need help. Thanks doll....
Do the Gnodes ever have to be replaced? I recently bought the G6 and was wondering why there's a biological schedule on the monitoring system. Considering this is where all the filters beneficial bacteria thrive, why would they need replacing?
@JulianROwen Im sure I say this in one of the videos at some point, but no they never need to be replaced. Though once in a while they might need to be rinsed out, which is what the schedule is for; because debris and other things can get stuck in it. Also the mechanical and chemical filtration will have beneficial bacteria doing work in/on them too, just not to the same extent. The only time you would have to replace your g-nodes, is when they start deteriorating, but that will take years.
do they have a built in heater im really confused with that it said it has a temperature meter, and does the filter heat the water too im really curious please respond
I have the G6 Filter, and my problem is with in a year, the Magnetic Impeller broken and it cost $45 for replacement. and it is very very very difficult to get spare parts for this series. so guys have to think careful before you get one. the end of the day, no one can see the filter and it really not much different than other................. :(
@lwkkeith It has a 2 year warranty (might actually be 3 year I forgot). That means if it just broke on its own, its free. Even if it wasnt under warranty, those things dont break easily. The impellers, the shafts and what not that they come on are pretty beefy. Not to mention even shitty ones are hard to break. You probably did something wrong when doing maintenance or something. On the G6 theres a special part that has to stay with the impeller assembly too, that the G3 doesnt have.
@AquariumTech I have not touching the filter after it set up. and one morning I woke up and on the display shows the problem, so I took it out and found the impellers broken. forgot to mention, yes it was under warranty, but my local fish shop said has to wait 2 months for the parts arrive. and I dont think it can wait that long. so I bought it online instead .......................................
@lwkkeith Well the warranty is from Fluval or Hagen, not the store (although goods stores will honor it) you should have contacted Hagen directly and they would make sure you had that bad boy by the end of the week. Thats still pretty crazy it broke, those things arent cheap because they are well built. Keep an eye on your filter, it could have even been something misaligned in the area the impeller spins. If it happens again you will know its something with that area or the motor.
do you have to fill the unit with water before anything else or will the water flow after pressing the primming button because ive got a message that says air in the system an motor will not start
OMG so jealous! The G series is the only member of the Fluval family that I have not owned since the 03 series XD (they were very pricey at release even with my discounts with Fluval.). Also please god be careful with that mechanical cartridge! The piece you are knocking off has 2 small clips that when you force it off like that can become rounded or break alltogether, and when that is not firmly on that cartridge you begin to get a backflow against the filter membrane.
Also forgot to ask where are you getting these at good deals? I see i can probably get one on ebay for cheaper then some online stores but is there a paticular store you go to? DO you frequent ma and pa stores or big box stores?
would you recommend this filter for a saltwater tank? I only ask cause i dont think you mention if its better for fresh or salt in any of your videos.
@xevilspideyx I do mention that these are great for freshwater planted tanks (maybe not this part) and I think somewhere, that for saltwater I would rather just use a GOOD (thats key) sump system. If your set though on regular market canisters (like fluvals, ehiems, and etc.), like this one, this would actually be a good choice then. Now there a lot of opinions and options running tanks, so just know that.
Good show. I got a great deal on one of these this weekend and it’s pretty neat. I went ahead and put it on my 55 gallon. It has had two penguin 350s on it for years and I was wondering about how long it would take to develop the biological filter so I could remove one or both the 350s. This is my first canister filter.

@AquariumTech yes, I use the brush, take off the bottom, give it a good rinse.

The 10 times turnover is based on HOB Power Filter performance. Canisters only need to turn the water over 5 times per hour to be effective.

My 405 is such a pain to take apart and clean that I don't clean as often as I should. I think I am going to try the G6. Thanks for the review!

How often do you have to clean the mechanical filter?
kmc98 9 months ago
@kmc98 Depends, whats in the tank and etc. I usually do it like every 15 days.
AquariumTech 9 months ago
its only roughly 5 times per hour is what you need.

Oww almost forgot the little wire hook with the loop at the end is an impeller shaft tool.
