  • the european version of the atari 7800 adds a built-in version of asteroids.

  • the hell? can't i play contra with rambo and company in the contra game in europe?

and changing the game to probe-something makes it alright? they don't know what a probe is, amirite?...just saying

  • I know that music(2:55) from somewhere, even remixed. Just cant remember where...

  • @finalineGTR flying battery zone from sonic and knuckles

  • @LuchadoreBob watch?v=UXsIBC7q3UI

  • Lylat Wars is the original japanese name whilst Starfox is the american name whilst Starwing is the european name.

  • @yethboth I have the original Japanese SNES of Starfox and its called StarFox noe Lylat Wars

  • who gives a fuck nerd?

  • @TheDjDroof You probably work for a nerd and/or pack their groceries. Nerds keep the internet running. You know that thing that you think you're so anonymous on.

  • what da song at the end

  • @thenintendofanboy64 fying battery remix foms sonic and knuckles remixed

  • I quit playing console games because I am mad at them for watering it down and overcharging for the cartridge games.

  • @ScrewAttackEurope Not your fault, man. I was agreeing with your point that game makers soften up games to appease lobbyist jerks.

  • its called genisis in Europe? I thought it was the other way around. mine is called a genisis.

  • @OmagaMinion No, it's called the Mega Drive everywhere except the US and Canada.

  • But you should keep in mind that the problem is not only the law which is ought to protect minors from unsuitable media, but also the publishers who are distributing cut games and movies in order to get a lower rating and to make more money.

Therefore for the US sexual content is removed, for Germany and Australia violent content, for Germany and Austria content which *might* play down fascism....

  • Censoring games does not work. Her in Germany, we still have school shotings and the like. And games have been censored here since the beginning. But there is a way around this. just buy the game from some other country. For Germans, it's easy to buy a game from Austria, where the laws are more relaxed in theis regard. It's a shame that this happens here, but I don't see a change, so let the Gov't lose out on the 19% sales tax.

  • @bean420man Thats because Censoring games has nothing to do with violence or killings death or destruction. Those things have been around long before video games or computer technology.

  • I've read in American gaming magazines that Sega went with Genesis for the Mega Drive in the U.S. to appeal to the bible belt, and to Star Trek fans. But so much info on such matters conflict with each other, who knows?

    STAY AWESOME! :)

  • @cessnaace I heard they changed the name as another product was copyrighted as the Mega Drive in the US and Canada.

  • @ScrewAttackEurope Either explanation seems logical and plausible to me. Your explanation make sense, so it's feasibly the actual explanation. I can't even remember which gaming mag I read the bible belt explanation in. I've been sorting through my back issue lately and have counted (so far) over 400 gaming magazines, both American and British dating clear back to about 1979. I'm thinking about doinf mag flick vids.

    STAY AWESOME mate! :)

  • European Extreme...sounds really gay.

  • @EricSchwin22 HARDCORE gay!

  • @EricSchwin22 Its insane!

  • I was told that Lylat wars got its name because a Professor Lylat had discovered a constellation and named it after star fox.

Also this video crashes for me at 2:40 :(

  • Awesome and informative. Subscribed. :)

  • fucking europe just loves changing thinkgs around... i think they just trying to piss other countries off to gain a reason for war... instead of hitler, theyll have some guy named zitler.haha

  • what about final fantasy 10 it lost all the dark aeons for the us release for the same reason as mgs 2 got changed and lost e-extreme they are too hardcore.

  • Danté must die.

  • Super Mario 2 was the most fucked up alteration in the history of nintendo imo.

I always thought there was something really strange about it as a kid, but i could never put my finger on it.

  • hahahaha.. thats some funny shit dude. lol

  • I also believe that the final Boss in Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime (go figure) was harder in the european version compared to the american version; ours moves more often, and faster.

Also, now I know why I didn't see Contra on the Virtual Console. Thanks, I never knew it was called 'probotector' here. =/

  • That is really f*cked up!

  • why can't they just get along? dunno why i said that but seriously all games should be the same between all countries (unless legal standards kick in) i mean seriously right now im hunting jap copies of games to get special levels that i can't even understand the words to but in the case of like Germany i believe that games could only portray robots or zombies with i think green blood which is ridiculous as everyone knows that games don't desensitize bad movies do

  • The arcade Gryzor wasn't even an exact localization of the arcade Contra. For some reason they took out the 2-Player co-op and added a 2-player alternating mode instead.

  • Really? What an odd thing to do.

Are you sure that wasn't just a version for single player cabinets and cocktail table machines?

  • The two versions of Gryzor emulated by MAME has alternating multiplayer If a co-op version of Gryzor was made, it's most likely that it hasn't been emulated yet.

Konami often made rather odd changes to their arcade games when they were localizing them for certain markets. Life Force for example, the American version of Salamander, changed the setting so it takes place inside a giant alien's body.

  • This rivals my work but thumbs up to the guy. He is right about us being screwed when it comes to video games. I was planning to do this on my series but oh well.

  • at least back in playstation/saturn era when a game was released later in europe it usually had extra features/costumes that rest of the world wouldnt get until platinum editions

  • Why does everyone freak when I say snes?

  • Because Americans throw hissy fits if you go against something they've hardwired into thinking.

  • Its not just americans though, my college classmates and old friends too. I just don't get it.

  • Technically speaking, Americans invented the acronym because it came out here first and you changed it because you're used to pronouncing acronyms as words. So you looked at our "SNES" acronym and naturally thought "snez." But why do you pronounce the last "s" like a "z?"

  • The narration in Metriod Prime sounds like the narrator for the intro of the old South Park game for N64

  • I never knew we had a different Contra O.O

  • Only on the NES.

  • Nintendo Europe is headquartered in Germany, Nintendo Europe must have judged all of Europe by Germany, after all, there's no reason for the British version of Contra to have robots.

  • Esepcially as other ports in the UK were the same as the original.

  • So I assume you disagree with your own country's stupid censors. So what was their problem with the word "ninja" that turned Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles?

  • Well that was the BBC rather than the censors, the new version was called Ninja Turtles too.

It was some overly sensitive jumped up idiot the BBC hired, they also had an issue with Michaelangelo's nunchucks and edited out scenes of him using them as a weapon, despite the fact they aired ThunderCats with Panthro using them completely uncut.

  • I actually used a sound editor to isolate all the parts of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme song where "ninja" is said. I think I ought to take that and put it to a montage of Michelangelo using his nunchuks just to spite them.

  • Sweet!

  • Except WMG has been cracking down on people who use the TMNT theme (which they don't even own), even your friend James Rolfe.

  • 1 thing that's confusing about the Contra games is that why do the main charaters kill the military when there's a bigger threat at the end of the game?, if the earth was in danger & the military was around u wouldn't go "No military forces will do my job, I'll take care of it by me & me alone, even if it means killing Innocent people" that dosn't make sense though having killer robots on a killing spree, does make more sense. Unless Contra fans can say that I'm talking a load of bollocks :).

  • i wish my snes work there awsome

  • Isn't mostly Germany that has done the majority of the banning on violent games? Nowadays it seems instead of a ban developers will go back to create a specific German version to tone down the violence.

  • Yeah, they're neurotic that violent video games will make another Hitler!

    I'm not kidding!

  • It's sounds stupid but that might be true. I'm german and I don't really know why the fuck they ban and censor so much games. All mature/18+ games are horribly cut. Though it is kind of ironic that a country which wanted to take over the world gets its games censored to dust.

There have been some school shootings in the recent years and guess what they blamed ? Video games.

I mostly import my games from UK or Austria because they are uncut. You'd facepalm if you would have to play L4d.

  • I think it's really the older generation overly paranoid that kids playing violent video games will somehow bring forth the "next Hitler".

In the UK, they're more relaxed in terms of violenc (well they had issues with Carmageddon and Night Trap), but anything to do with Sex and they go ape shit over it.

So it's OK to destroy countless lives, bet creating new life is a big no no :S

  • Here they go apeshit over everything ww2,violent,sex related. They blame Video Games for the upgoing crimerate, even though there are other obvious reasons for that (Family/Media/etc).

Politicans call violent games "Killerspiele".They also talk a lot about banning all violent video games (even if theyre censored already). D:

Being German is bad luck. Everyone gives you a kick in the face, even your own government. Everyday I hear the name Hitler. I'm fed up with it.

    Time 2 emigrate:>

  • Really? What would "Killerspiele" in English be? It does sound kind of similar to Jack Thompson in the US branding violent games as "Murder Simulators".

But I thought it was illegal to talk about anything Nazi related in the German media?

  • Yeah it is illegal, maybe my comment was not clearly understandable.

What I wanted to say is that they remind you every week that WW2 happened and that you have to be sorry for what your ancients did wrong. (What doesn't make it easier is when you go online you see a lot of British, other Europeans&Americans calling germans nazi, jerries. which is rather depressing for a pacifist like me ;p)

Killerspiele means Killergames, and ya it's similar to "Murder Simulators".

  • damn man, like u said it, its just bad luck being born under german soil... the reputation of WW2 is not gonna fade away for atleast 200 years..

but really, the part that bothers me more is not that germans killed millions of jews, but the fact that they believed hitler when he said jews were children of the devil and should all be slaughter.

  • @ZeSpekov Germany really does get the shaft when it comes to games. It's a shame, really. One of my favorite examples to cite is I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, where an entire level (themed after a concentration camp) was hacked out of the game thus making the game impossible to beat. The kicker is that the whole point of the level is "nazis were very bad people" so it's not like the game promotes nazism...

  • @ScrewAttackEurope

At least Jack Thompson lost his license for ten years. "Killerspiele" are "Killergames" if you want to translate in in a simple way. And no, it is not forbidden to talk about anything related to the nazi regime. You're just not allowed to glorify it. This means no.. "Heil Hitler!" and no lifting the right hand to greet like they did back then. Sadly enough germans are always branded as nazis for every decision the make.

  • @ScrewAttackEurope

only to use the swastika in other context than documentation and history is illegal, as well as nazi ideas, propaganda, and things against democracy itself.

other than that you can do what you like, plenty of nazi appearences on tv, and even german comedians dressing up as hitler and making fun of it (harald schmidt did it like a million times :D)

  • @ScrewAttackEurope It's only illegal to display the swastika or release media or publications praising the nazis. To see it in documetaries or to see it in a historical context is allowed. Which is a good thing. Games and such are censored when body parts can be cut or shot off, removed. This is the case with Left 4 dead, Fallout 3 and I think also bioschock. Plus other games. But you can still import uncensored versions of these games.

  • damn, and i tought america was fucked up.. now i see i good i have it...

  • @ScrewAttackEurope the uk has really came to its senses about sex in video games, its not really an issue any more. i mean fahrenheit and heavey rain only got a 15 cert in the uk were as in america heavy rain got a M rating and i think (not 100%) that fahrenheit's sex scene was cut in the us

  • @ScrewAttackEurope They had issue with Carmededdon here in the U.S. too, but at least the PlayStation version got released in the U.K. It was announced here at E3, and then cancelled. We did get the PC version of course, and the versions released on the N64 and the GBC. But I won't go into them. lol.

    STAY AWESOME! :)

  • Wow... I never knew any of this. Nice work! =)

  • uk rules usa sucks

  • Erm....How is that racist?

  • HE said "UK rules USA sucks"

  • Europeans are the same race as americans

  • Well it's still discrimination.

  • Well it's technically Xenophobia, not racism.

  • I live in America and I like your modle of the Super Nintendo more because the controller looks more flashy and the SNES on the PAL looks alot more sleeker.

  • They're slightly more robust and you don't slice all the skin off your fingers whenever you press the eject button with the UK model ^_^

Sadly it's not S-Video compatible though.

  • i love our snes and i actually hate the na version. it reminds of cars:

    japan - mainly tuner

    america -mainly muscle

    eu -mainly sport

  • I want the European version of MGS2 now. Also, does anybody else think Metroid SHOULDN'T have narration? The environment is so much more enthralling when the sound effects and music are all you hear, as would the intro, I'd think.

  • this gets me really annoyed!! ALL OF IT! ALL OF IT!!

  • My friend has a SNES, but I think it's the American model, which is weird.

    I'm English, by the way.

  • Well if it's got purple buttons on it, it's a US model.

  • Oh, I'm wrong. Never mind.

  • there was a game in america called castlevainia bloodline and in europe they censored it and called it castlevainia the new gen! btw the game was for the sega mega drive.

  • Actually thats a misconception from Americans, they hear one version is censored (Specifically the German version) they proclaim that ALL versions in Europe are censored.

    The UK version 100% uncensored.

  • OH ADAM!

  • Hey Tony! fancy seeing you here!

  • Wow the UK snes looks awful compared to the US one

  • I'm completely the opposite.

The UK/Japanese machine is better built, doesn't look like a cinder block and won't slice half the skin on your finger off everytime you press the eject button.

I so own a US model BTW.

  • hhmmm? I'm not so sure

you have a very good point about the eject button, but i always thought the Super Famicon a little to boring.

But then again, the colours on the joypad are pretty. So, i'm sorta half 'n' half.

  • yeh it lacks the purple touch doesn't it?

  • OH ADAM!

  • Are your videos designed to appeal to a UK audience, or are they designed to give US audiences a UK perspective on things?

  • Well I didn't make this one at all.

  • Be quiet please, We've been pronouncing it as Snezz in Europe since it was launched over sixteen years ago, and the Nezz since launch before that over twenty.

You can look at any SNES game review by any Brit on Youtube if you need proof.

Do you go around telling Brits that they're pronouncing "Tomarto" incorrect as well? "Oh, its supposed to be "Tomayto""

  • Little tip, Best to take account of regional language and do some research before going off on a "pronunciation police" rant. It makes you look less off an arrogant, ill-informed prick that way.

  • your right about that & Dynasty Warrior fan's called Cao Cao(Tsao Tsao) "Cow Cow".

  • And Kage in Virtua Fighter was called "Cage" for years before people realised it's supposed to be "Car-Gay".

Also Ryu from Street Fighter II People called him Rye-You for years.

And the original Sega as Seee-Ga

  • We all make mistake sometimes.

  • Los Angeles is not pronounced right in British or American English. US say Los Angel-less, UK says Los Angel-lees but the proper Spanish pronunciation is Los An-hel-lace.

  • I made a comment about this on one of ashens videos and some oversensitive person from the UK angrily insisted that he pronounced said "en-ee-ess" and then an American angrily said that he pronounced it "ness." I only remarked the regional difference in pronunciation.

  • PROBOTECTORRR!

  • Also, didn't the PAL version of Final Fantasy X have such things as the super bosses "The Dark Aeons", an "easy" and "hard" mode, and such touches as giving Anima a multi hit overdrive (that could easily do a few hundred thousand points of damage)?

  • Wow, Adam sounds like Michael Fielding!

  • I do, now that you mention it! Kind of ironic since I don't like The Mighty Boosh.

  • Only twats who don't understand comedy like The Mighty Boosh.

  • GO Europe!!!

  • Wait I know you didn't make this video but didn't Laylat Wars also have crappy voices while StarFox64 had proper voices.. Then again maybe it was because the time I playewd Laylat wars was in the Brawl's Masterpiece games. So maybe it was just the Brawl trail crappy voices but I don't know.

  • Unless the guy who made it (I can't be bother looking for his youtubes account see's this then well then he made it.. (lol)

Really though I want to know what Laylat Wars had crappy voices. Or it is just because I played it through Brawl's Masterpiece games.

  • Oh and StarFox64 still had proper voices.

  • You're partially right. Lylatwars had the original English voice acting, and they also added the voice acting of "Lylat", which is what you heard. God knows why they gave it to us, because it's crap compared to the English voice acting, but meh. :P

  • Blame George Lucas.

  • Hm, how come he made them do it? o.o

  • Because "Star Wing" sounded a lot like "Star Wars" according to Lucas' lawyers.

Plus they were about to release Shadows of the Empire on the N64, so they probably wanted to play nice!

  • Oh right then, fair enough. We just need more Earthbound in this continent to be honest. :P I own the game anyway (Modded SNES), but that's not the point. :D

  • FFVII had extra cutscenes over the Japanese version like the test tube cutscene with Zack, and Resi evils usually have extra costumes to the yank version, silent hill 3 and ZOE 2 are also diff but not sure what been added,I guess on SH it the costumes and ZOE 2 the mini mission mode

  • hmm i play the uk version of ff7 and i never saw the test tube sceene

  • Long live the "Snez"! xD

Everybody in the UK calls it that. And that it why we rock.

  • Comment removed

  • I call that console the "Snez" too, as for the NES, well you know

  • I really don't understand the censoreship of various games that can't be released because of the huge amount of violence, or coarse language, or full frontal things, why is America allowing it then? Or japan? The tollerance in Europe is just ridiculous, for instance, you can only buy GTA4 only if you're 18, i happen to be 20, and i played the game, and it's just a normal game! The same violence, the same coarse language, but even a 13 year old can play it.

  • i am 13 and thats the best game ever although its quite bad because of the prostosioutes and the strip club although there both very funny

  • ja, in germany is ilegal to play wolfenstein 3D beacouse of the music

  • Whats with the music that makes it illegal? I know its illegal to buy, even though some Germans I know bought RTCW on the Xbox on launch by mail ordering it from Sweden.

  • beacouse of the nazi national song, in germany is not alloud to replay the back song from Wolfenstein 3D

  • WTF, i thought it was because it shows nazis in a not particularly good light, as if it is possible for the nazis to have a good spin on them. But i have heard the national anthem and the tune for the bit of the anthem "Deutshland Uber Allas" (excuse spelling) i think has been removed

  • yep it's strange, but even whit the removal, Wolfenstein was not allouded to buy on germany

  • im still not that surprised the film "downfall" was revolutionary step in nazis shown in a forum as large as film, video games are abit behind. was the original Wolfenstein 3D released in Germany.

  • I got to say that Downfall had several innacuracies about the last days of Hitler's life.

  • but it did break barriers, seeing an exact film about the last days of hitler would have been quite tedious id imagine, but it is a great film all the same. and it was the first portrayal of a german dir. and actors to mmake a film about this delicate subject, but a musical would have been better

    lolololololololololol

  • I liked the part where he rants about being banned from Xbox Live. Oh wait that's a youtube video...

  • Squall6593 (Adam Brown) did a pretty nice job of explaining the changes made to some games for the European territories. I though Probotector was a cool idea to have for a video game when I've first heard about it in Contra 4's Museum Mode, and had appealed more to me than shirtless tough men used in the Contra games.

  • I heard that Star Fox 64 was changed to Lylant Wars because of trademark issues on the name (which may be very much relatable to previous title's case). I wonder, too, if, seeing that the NES (with the American design) wasn't very popular in Europe and even had been defeated by the Sega Master System there, since it had the Japanese shell, the Super Nintendo had done well in the market for that region. Congratulations for reaching 2000 subscribers prior to this video, too, ScrewAttackEurope.

  • Thanks, It was changed by Lylat Wars because George Lucas thought Star Wing sounded a little too much like Star Wars for his liking.

The Master System obliterated the NES over here because of Nintendo's lacklusture attitude towards Europe, they've always treated us like shit, releasing games six months later here, if ever *cough* Super Mario RPG *cough*.

  • You're very welcome. I didn't know that the title change had to do with a possible infringement of Star Wars from George Lucas (quite similar to the alternation of the Beam Sword's sound effect in the original Super Smash Bros.; it sounded like a light saber in the Japanese version, but was changed to a different clash for the US, at least).

  • I did know, though, that the reason the NES fumbled there was because it was poorly marketed in Europe, and I'm guessing from that information the Super Nintendo wasn't popular over there, either. I see Super Mario RPG wasn't released in the region, from my sources, too...

  • The Snes was pretty popular, though the megadrive had been released a lot earlier. The nes had better games but it is an horribly tempremental system compared to The Master System, which had better graphics and a lot of crap games.

  • Ah, I see. Thank you for letting me know. It seems, then, that the NES was highly ignored due to the poor distribution of games, making the Sega Master System a preferred choice for people in Europe. The latter console did have some good titles, though, such as Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, Space Harrier, and Ghouls 'N Ghosts.

  • Thank you! I certainly did my homework!

  • You're welcome, Squal6593 (sorry for putting two L's in your username before). I wish you well for any of the future works that you do.

  • After watching your video again, I've noticed that you've put two L's in your name in the credidentials, too. I suppose it can work either way, and I just wanted to address the correction.

  • we also get cenered movies which pisses me off

  • We're just too hardcore for you yanks

  • i have no idear what you mean but thats proble becuz i am a muppet

  • Wow I remember picking up a port of Contra on Cassette for my old C64 yonks ago.

Wait isn't Probotector is a contraction of Anal Probe and Inspector Gadget, I thought it was common knowledge by now....?

  • yeah it was Gryzor not Contra.

  • Alright vid, but SPEAK UP, MATE! Some interesting information, but the delivery somewhat lessened the impact.

  • i don't get it though, i mean whats harder than extreme mode in european extreme mode, in extreme mode there is hardly any rations, your life dosen't generate when its in red and if you are fighting a boss one hit from him equals INSTANT DOOM!!so whats harder in it??

  • There are NO rations at all.

Guards don't drop a single item. You

can't re-start a new game on a different difficulty until you clear it.

  • thank you sir, i do belief you have won this argument

  • River City Ransom for the NES is called Street Gangs in Europe and Australia.

  • I wouldn't call them gay but they do suck since they are not the real titles to the actual games but the games themeselves are still good and fun to play.

  • true

  • i have this, but for the megadrive

  • No you don't. It wasn't released on the megadrive.

  • probotector tht is

  • Yeah, Probotector on th eMega Drive was the final ever Contra game to be rebranded as Probotector, so he definetly has one.

  • Thankyou for backing me up on that on ScrewAttack!

  • wow..very interesting!

  • Yeah, but only on the special editions of the games!

  • Another one is Luigi's Mansion. It has a huge amount of differences in The Hidden Mansion.

  • LOL!! 2:30 "...and the European Extreme mode, which is too hardcore for Americans" XD

  • I'm glad someone found it funny.

  • Dude, you sounded half asleep. The information was good but your delivery needs some caffeine.

  • That and more practice.

  • Good work Squall and congrats to Screw Attack Europe for surpassing the 2,000 subsciber mark. I'm not too fussed at the Probotector change. Robots are cooler than topless men.

  • thanks... probably the first kind of video on youtube that doesn't have some kind of crack against America... 5 stars
