I am getting a car next month. I'm down to two choices. A 2004 - 2006 Mercedes S430 or a 2006 XJ8L. I've found for the same year, the Jags are less expensive. Or better put, for the same money the Jags will have up to 20K less miles on them. I've got to tell you, I found this video very cool. I wish you had buckled up and filmed longer.
@nbadhorse That's a tough call, I love Jags & have had nothing but amazing experiences with the ones I have owned. The Merc might be the better car just cuz it's an S class, that's why it costs more. As much as I love the Jag XJs, the S class is still on a slightly higher level, at least for the mid-2000s era. My recommendation is to see both of them in person, even drive them if possible, & see which one you like better, that's what really matters.
It's the seat belt indicator, I didn't have my seat belt on. Unfortuantely all new cars have that which is pretty annoying. I'm not sure what you mean by OC.
Sorry man, I've got so many people commenting to me all the time I forgot all about this question. They are not unreliable but most of the problems are electrical. Jags have always been soild as a tank & had good engines but the electrical/wiring has always been the weakness. I would say the 98-03s are not unreliable as I said, but the chances of electrical problems would be increased slightly from the 04-09 era but nothing to be a cause of concern, a 98-03 will probably be pretty dependable.
@JaguarLexusCentral No worries. Have you had any electrical problems (major ones or small ones) in your 2005? If I wanted an alternative XJ or a similar age to a mid-to-late 1990s LS400, which would you recommend the most? Is the XJ a more expensive car overall to run than an LS400?
Thank you so much! Your mom would love it, just make sure you get any potential Jag checked out before you buy it 'cause while most Jags are great, there are occasional lemons & that would be a scary thing with a Jag 'cause they can be really costly to fix! But if you get the right one like I did, you won't have to worry about a thing, the '04 to '09s are extremely reliable!! According to Consumer Reports, the Jags from '06 to '09 were ranked the most reliable of any car brand from that era!!!!
I even heard that they ranked higher than Lexus for '07. I would love to have one. But are the '04-'09 XJs more reliable than the 1998-2003 XJs?
Costly, especially with Lexus as well. PLUS, unlike Mercedes, Jaguars are such timeless cars that you don't have to be fickle in how often you purchase one to impress business associates. You can have a 10 year old one and no one will ever know the difference. You can't do that with Lexus or Mercedes or Cadillac.
It was this year Jag finished first. They base it on a 3 year survey so it's still only short-term but it still gives a good indication of what to expect for years to come. I believe it was only the 2nd time Lexus hadn't been ranked #1 in 16 years which is pretty impressive. A year ago you would be right about Jags never looking old, some people who don't know any better still think mine is brand new! But with the new XJ coming this year, plus the XF, my Jag is going to start looking old soon.
Yeah, I was gonna mention that Jag is getting revolutionary with their designs, not evolutionary. I heard that Jaguar's sales have doubled. Which one would you have? The Lexus GS460, or the Jaguar XF Premium?
Yes the '04-'09 Jags are more reliable than the '98-'03s! The '04-'09s are the main reason Jag got that #1 spot in reliability. The '98-'03s arent bad, but they are only a bit better than average if I were to rate them. They are certainly not as reliable as an LS, & if it werent for the heavy repair costs, one of those might be a good choice for a used car 'cause you can get them for pretty cheap! The '95-'97s were very reliable for some reason, you couldnt get a V8 back then though, only V6. :(
i love the jags at night and this is a Vanden Plas right it looks like you have the pipeing on the seats and the lambswool rugs and it looks so funny to see the main dials to be in Km/h lol and btw the worst thing you could do to a car in park is keep reving it at the same speed/RPM just to tell you
Nope, just the stock XJ8. I know it's not good to rev the engine like that, I just want people to hear what the engine sounds like. This car does not rev very well anyways, there is a limiter at 4,000 RPMs, that's why the reving was a bit weak in this video. My old LS400 surprisingly gives off a great sound when it revs, I've got it on another video somewhere on my page.

Can I assume you would recommend the Jag?

I have a question: What are the problems experienced with the 1998-2003 XJs that ranks them as not being too reliable?

If I get a 1996 or 1997 LS400, what are some of the particular things I should watch out for?

Pretty awesome, and I love the green dials. How has the Jaaggg been for reliability?
1bentley4ever 2 years ago 2
The newer Jaaaagggs are great for reliability! Plus I never have to pay for anything! Lol!
JaguarLexusCentral 2 years ago
Sounds awesome. Sounds like Jag has cleaned up its act. Sounds like your 2 sedans, the LS400, and your XJ8, are real gems.
Do you drive the LS for everyday commuting?
1bentley4ever 2 years ago
I drive them both fairly frequently.
JaguarLexusCentral 2 years ago
Ok, is the Jaaggg as fuel efficient as I've heard it is?
1bentley4ever 2 years ago
Fuel efficient? No. It's still a 4.2 V8, I wouldn't call it fuel efficient. It's not bad on gas for a V8 though.
JaguarLexusCentral 2 years ago
That's what I meant' but is the Jag or the Lexus better on the jungle juice?
