I saw this show more times than I care to count. The day after the Tonys my friend and I sent Raul a card backstage with a bouquet of sunflowers. The front of the card had this very retro 1960s looking woman with a cigarette holder saying, "I only want revenge. Is that so wrong?" Inside we wrote, "Bring me the head of David Hyde Pierce." That night he sang the shit out of Being Alive and got a five to seven minute standing ovation...it was sorta "BLEEP YOU TONYS" moment
I am proud to say I walk through the halls that Raul walked through. Ok, my acting teacher got two people into Juilliard. Let's hope I can be the third.

I saw Company up at Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Summer 2007. It may be because the cast and set weren't as great as on the West End on Broadway, but I and the rest of my family seeing it thought "WTF?" with regards to the plot. The show went nowhere, but the talent on show was as expected, so it was alright from that perspective.
COMPANY is what is referred to as a concept musical. It was an attempt to break away from the conventional Broadway musical arch. So you could say the show is all in his mind, and he's seeing all these little snapshots trying to make a decision to be alone in this city or try to be with someone. So in regards to the plot thee isn't one. However, it's a great social commentary piece on New York City.
ilyfan thats not all true.Company was a revival so it had to close some time in the year. just look at grey gardens lots of people came to see it and it closed almost a month after company.
What? Being a revival didn't contribute to the show's closing, and not all revivals close within the same year. Look at the current production of Chicago. I believe it's the longest running revival (ever) on Broadway.
great news! the're gonna tape both of saturday's performances in hopes that it will be aired on pbs or something... check it out on playbill - dot- com
Heather Law was awesome on "Not Getting Married", as was Barbara Walsh in "The Ladies Who Lunch".I don't understand why this show is closing on July 1st...producers decision? Raul got bored? Was Bobby always bi-sexual? Was this added to this production? I hope they make a movie of "Company" someday..
orca1142 - without seeing both Sweeney AND Company, you cannot make a judgement as to how the staging works - it is much more than just the "orchestra on stage". After seeing both, each one used the instruments for different purposes, and in different ways, and are distinctly different productions.
Since Broadway shows began, is was *customary* for a show to close after a year or two, so don't say that shows that close after a year or two suck, dear god.
there are plays and musicals on broadway, but there is only one "experiance" this show...Company...is an "experiance" it should run forever, but because of retarded producers and audiences....they are just too afraid of keeping what should be on broadway....this show AND this production is what musical theater is all about
I agree completely. I came up to NYC for a theatre camp in June, and we went to see several shows. Company was the one i was looking forward to least. However it was probably my favorite that we saw. It was simply STUNNING in every way. Lighting, Staging, Music, Acting, Singing its all there. And it's all phenomenal. For one reason or another this show has everything. And its a damn shame that it closed so soon.
I couldn't agree with you more. I saw this show and was mesmerized by it all, the cast, stage direction, music, and the phenomenal performance of Raul. It is such a shame that art like this isn't appreciated by the larger public.
i love the staging. i love this whole production. i saw it last saturday and i want to see it again before it closes. raul esparza & the whole cast are just simply amazing.
Wow, thats depressing. Why are the musicals lately only playing a year or two? Theres no more long-running musicals like Cats or Les miz or phantom anymore. The 2000s musicals so far have sucked....except for wicked, thats a success.
I dont like the orchestra on stage AGAIN. Its like a copy from Sweeney. Only Sweeney is cool enough to do that...and John Doyle should think of something NEW to do and not the same orchestra on stage again.
the issue is *not* being too cheap to hire an orchestra (actors are actually compensated as being musicians as well) but rather how the toned down orchestrations work with the staging, not to distract from it.
Brilliant! Thank you so much for uploading this and "Ladies Who Lunch." If you have "Another Hundred People," I would LOVE to see it.I absolutely love this musical and this production.
Great filming! I love how you captured the staging and as well as close ups on everyone. One thing that I hate about all the Sweeney videos is you never get to see what is going on on the sides. There is a whole show on the outskirts that is missed.
See this production on Jan 28. I'm so excited. I saw John Doyle's production of "Sweeney Todd" last year with Patti Lupone. What a brilliant ingenius concept. I was enthralled not just by the acting/singing, but Patti Lupone played a tuba. I can't wait for this one!
The orchestrations in these shows are phenomenal - SWEENEY's really got to the horror of the piece, while COMPANY made the music more fun and modern.
Mr. Doyle, please do A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC like you said you might - I would be the first one in line for the CD (although I live too far away to see the show, sadly enough).
His voice sounds better than the recorded performance. He was kinda nasal and bland then. Thanks for the video, I love Company even more now.

Lack-luster at best and he pales in comparison to Cheyenne Jackson. And yes I do understnd the character of Bobby.
