Wow. We just left the Cinque Terre area on 15.October. We stayed in Monterosso for three nights; the weather was perfect. How quickly things went bad. Our prayers to all living or visiting in the flood stricken areas.... (L&S, Honolulu, Hawaii)
our little ceramics shop La Buatta is just under the red archway, it is absolutely devastating and sadly people lost their lives that day...I was on the last train to leave...and very lucky to get out...it was like a tsunami from the mountains....
I actually think that we saw you in front of the shop that day, when you closed for the day. It was raining and about noon. We (two people in rain clothes, one in blue and one in black) were hanging around the red archway not really knowing where to go. Some times later we went to the train station and saw you again leaving Vernazza by train. Shortly after the train left more and more water flooded the station and we followed a local through the track over a wall.
@andrewhandrick Later a very friendly local took us in, gave us dry clothes and let us stay in her flat until we left by boat next day. It was very shocking for us to see that cute little town to get destroyed that fast. How is your shop? We really hope the best for the people in Vernazza and that they can return to their homes soon.
@herpesnerd I think I remember you guys...glad to hear you were well looked after... it was as shock to the locals too..nothing like this has ever happened before...it's still shocking... we have not been able to access our shop yet, it was filled with water but not as bad as others by some miracle...though obviously we have lost a lot of stock.it will be a big clean up...I was happy I got out when I did...2 shop owners did not make it out..very very sad for the village..
This is heartbreaking. Vernazza is one of the most beautiful places on earth and I remember playing on that lovely little beach with my child when she was small and eating pesto fettuccini there on the Piazza at Gianni Franzi. So sad. Our prayers are with all the residents of this region.
Wow, that sucks. I was there a few years ago and loved it.

How horrible. Vernazza and Monterosso are two of my favorite places on earth. My thoughts are with the people there.

I am SO sad for this wonderful village. I still have photos on my iPhone of this very spot taken on our vacation just in Sept. So heartbreaking...

The situation there is critical now, there's a huge way to go before the comes back as beautiful as it was.
If someone wishes to help, you can fin all the details on several Facebook pages. Among them:
