The employees on MAC stores are usually stuck up and wont let you use their brushes, and they start to try to sell you something you don't need when you're just looking. In Etiquette, i prefer Sephora cause the ladies at EVERY Sephora Are always just the nicest.
I couldnt agree more with everything in this video, and I thank you so much for putting this out there. Total health safety tip especially around flu seasons and as you said pink eye is nasty buisness, along with any other disease that can be on lips and eyes- and well anywhere else. LIVE THESE LESSONS PEOPLE!
I was at a boots and asked to look at a tester mascara, she told me to sit down and tried to attack me with it. I only wanted to use it on my boyfriends arm hair too see if the product did what it said it would
so clear you have worked for MAC :) only an ex-employee of MAC would be able to speak out all these very important roles of sanitizing and disinfecting products at a cosmetic store/ counter.
folks this how it should be in your everyday life. folks have no respect for others. Ive seen people open up a product rub in skin or rub finger into it and put back on shelf. either don;t buy or have nerve to get another of the same to buy. so either some1 is going to buy the used and may have t o waste time returning or the store is going to remove and loss of income is past on to other consumers.
what do you think about asking for a free sample of foundation or something ? I feel rude, but i dont want to buy a $30 foundation without knowing how my skin will react. I am talking about a M.A.C counter if you were wondering.
I pretty much follow all the rules that come with visits to the makeup counters and mac sales associates still cease to be polite to me even tho im a regular. Theres only one guy thats sweet to me but the other guy and all the girls are always rude to me and never make any effort to help me. Maybe its just the atlanta area but i love mac and the sales reps just make my experience there horrible and i no longer enjoy it :(((
@LaSirenita0407- I TOTALLY agree. I live in the UK atm so it's not just your area. Whenever I go to mac all of the girls make me feel so uncomfortable and stare me down. If I ever go there when my make up isn't perfected they make me feel inferior, and once I actually saw two of the girls working there whispering and staring at me so I know they were talking about me. Its such bad service, and I actually stopped going there because it makes me feel like crap.
Thank you so so much. Your average Joe does not know this, it's so frustrating. I have worked at a cosmetic counter and so many people don't even know that disposable wands even exists. Thank you again!! :)
i have never used a tester in my life. people have peed not washed there hands and applied the product. also people double dip with the brushes in the product and it could have tons of nasty diseases in it. my friend even got pink eye from doing it.
you are so feminine...owh gee...i'm a women and i'm not like you ...weall im not that feminine women as you are ...i'm more acting like a boy...this world is so complicated...:)))))
Seriously, some of the department stores need etiquette lessons on this too!!! Like replenishing the tester implemets etc. The Sephora near me gets so dirty sometimes because students like to go in on school lunch breaks and do their makeup and then go back to class lmfao...
A lot of the places I go (Boots/Superdrug in the UK) don't provideq-tips or alcohol or spatulas or wipes etc. It's fine in MAC. But When I asked the salesgirl in Boots for a q-tip, she was like wtf are you on - we don't do that. Ugh I never used testers from those places but it means I've been left dissappointed when I try something at home.
Thanks for this video! I NEVER test at the makeup counter because I know everyone isn't clean... but now that you've given those tips I will give some things a try!
i recently went to my local mac counter, & after watching this i decided i would use these etiquette rules. I was going 2 test some of the blush. I asked 4 some hand sanatizer, nething so my germs would not b transfered on2 the product, she looked & spoke to me like i was stupid & told me "we all use our fingers just do that" not 2 mention the the lip glosses, instead of giving me a qtip nething 2try it out, she handed it 2 me & told me 2 test it on the back of my hand w/ the broken wand =/
When I'm famous and run my own vegan, animal friendly place.....THIS IS GOING ON A FLAT SCREEN TV!!!!!, you should've seen victoria's secret the day after black friday.......I think i broke out just looking at it!!!!!!
AMEN!!! Everyone needs to learn that..for us who use, test, and sell it does get very difficult watching all the people wrongly go about testing and so forth. Be safe and sanitize!
@xaddictive at his channel... theres al link that has a video "how i learned to do makeup" or something. he talks a little about the mac makeup job he was curious about.
perfect! I walked in to Ulta and didn't know what to use and not use, so I didnt use anything! I was kinda grossed out how people were just using the samples, brushes and testers, etc.
brilliant recommendations thank you, has any of you tested L'Oreals new range of products?! its hard to get hold of decent makeup in Vernon yet i managed to get awesome samples of make-up by using "GratisMakeupSamples", their cool.
anybody tried L'Oreal's new product line? there high quality , i continuously buy more! u can receive 100 % free cosmetics samples from "Gratis Makeup Samples". i recently got my samples on 06/09/2010.
I totally agree with you! I went to Sephora once and was just looking/ picking up product packaging and EVERYTHING was sticky. Cause everyone was putting thier grimy fingers into/onto everything. It was sooo gross.
I work at Aveda, and a smaller makeup counter that I can monitor unlike a larger makeup store like Sephora. My advice...PLEASE...allow ME to help YOU with our makeup. That way I can make sure every product and brush is sanitized before you use it and sanitized after. And I can do all the tips that Josh mentioned while telling you about what you're using at the same time. That way I can also extend the life of our testers. Hate when people dig holes in products trying to test them. :)
This is wonderful!! I worked at Sephora and watching people put their nasty fingers in stuff (as sephora prides themselves on customers being able to test anything any everything in the store) was really horrifying to watch.
I really hate when testers are all dirty!!! It's eeewww, and today I wanted to buy a lipstick and it was in a box but before i bought it I looked if the lipstick wasn't used already and guess what? It was all crashed in side ....ewww so I just want to say make sure that the products weren't used before, because even if it was in a box an everything that doesn't mean anything!
LOOOOOOOOOOVe that you said what had to be said haha I worked at a makeup counter and The people I worked with double-dipped, didnt clean, DISGUSTING! I was mortified when I told them the proper way and they basically laughed and said oh its not a big deal-they're all contaminated anyway...EIW! Needless to say I ended up quitting Thanks Petrilude!
I like quick tips like this and the fast pace is great, I haaate rambling and when people get off track. "This is a great eyeliner because....is this lighting ok??.....yeah its good, ok now I love this eyelin...eww is that a eyelash on my nose....no just a weird spec...ok sooo eyeliner..." i just mute it and do other things so when I go back to it, it is all loaded up and can fast forward through it. Ok, now IM rambling. wicked shirt!
thank you this helped soooo much! I wish all makeup artists at thee counters were as professional and nice as you! I know the benefit people are VERY RUDE/unprofessional.
Great vid. I hate when people let their children run around the make up counters and they are trying on the products. The other day I saw two 7 year old girls put mascara straight from the bottle on their eyelashes, they done the same with eyeline and lipstick. Control your children people.
ugh.... you are the kind of customer we dread. no offense. do you realize that we also work on commission? Don't mean to be rude by any means but testing it ensures that you will be happy with it if you decide to buy it. Why would you want to make the extra trip anyways? As long as you sanitize the way he suggested you will not have to be worrying about all those germs.
I rather make the extra trip than contract some disease. Not only that, how do I know that it was correctly sanitized or how long the product has been out for? How do I know there isn't already some kind of virus (which you can't kill with just plain alcohol) growing in the product? I rather be safe than sorry.
Thank god someone did a video on this, I work in a cosmetics department and people are always sticking their fingers in stuff and letting their kids roam free!
yep me too.. I deal with it daily. We had a lady today completely mess up our eyeshadows.. she smeared them all over her eyes and left eyeshadow smeared all over the tables. and the roaming kids thing is awful. why not just control your kids and use some discipline. People have no care in the world what we have to deal with!
I've never encountered q-tips available at the counter here, but I usually don't do swatches, except for foundation and the testers for those generally come in tubes. However, thanks for the tips! I'll try and remember bringing q-tips and handsanitiser myself when I go serious make-up shopping! And kids in shops? They annoy me regardless of what shop they're in!
This is great advice as well as all the other videos coming out recently about cleaning your personal makeup too. I went to a beauty store today and all the testers looked disgusting. Heck even the testers in the MAC store looked terrible too(not US, caribbean branch in T&T). It's bad but i usually just buy the product without testing it. I'm way too scornful to even want to use the testers.
they start looking horrible because customers who think it's ok to stick their fingers where they don't belong, keep our products from being sanitary. We do our best to clean our testers and I know since I work with Clinique we are very very sanitary and this is a reason why.
Thanks for this video. I work at Sephora and clients who come in and double dip etc. we have to throw the product away and make a new tester. That means less hours I get to work :(
AMAZING! i love the annotation of watching your kids at the counter, i work at a mac counter and im always having to sweep up powders and broken foundation glass from kids just being crazy.. some parents see their kids doing it and dont even say SORRY!!! uuugh!
another thing i think is crazy, is when people ask me in a pissed off tone "how do you expect me to try this on if you clipped the wand off?" like are you serious..ew.
I think the key is teaching kids to behave in places such as cosmetic stores. My husband is always deployed and I do not have family nearby to watch my kids so they go with me everywhere...including Sephora. No one has ever complained and instead I usually get compliments on how good my children are. :)
The tip is to keep the engaged. I bring my 5 yr old son. If i test something on my hand I use the same cotton swab and do his to. that way if he really wants to mess with eyeshadow or something its already on him.
My home town Sephora is really nice and clean, but I went to a Sephora in Hollywood and all the makeup was smeared and had hairs on it and it was just... gross. I always test the stuff on my arms, so when I leave the store my arms look like rainbows.
i totally wish make-up counters here are like that. i live in malaysia. all the testers are gross including the branded ones and the make-up artists keep wanting to put makeup on you directly without any kind of cleaning/disposable applicators. they just use the ones that come together with the tester and have tried it on 22 million people before u. sigh. i rarely buy makeup as a result until i'm sure i need it.
that's disgusting... glad ours aren't like that. I work at Clinique and we never double dip and always use new q-tips, cotton balls are whatever else we use to apply the product with. I would never let someone touch me with something that hasn't been sanitized.
The fact that some people actually USE testers makes me not want to try them out. It disgusts me :) So these tips? Fantastic! I wish more people would do that.
even lipsticks i wouldnt use rite on me...viral herpes of the mouth comes into mind and yuck ...yea ...i NEVER try any makeup on the counter...i buy ..if i dont like then i can make a friend really happy by giving it to them
Another tips for shoppers in general - or should I say NON-SHOPPERS! When you have NO intention on purchasing a product or are not genuinly interested do not waste the "persons there to help's" time..there are serious customers standing by!
exactly I hate when you have to stand by and listen to someone question a product like they are having a chat and then walk away. I always thank the person and tell them that I will have another look around but will most likely be back.
LOL...thanks for giving me a good laugh with your "speedy" tips...Understood you perfectly the first time I watched video...probably cuz i normally talk fast like that too =D
lol you(re talking so faaaast. Hum in France the salesclerk would look at me curiously if I ask them to wash the brush for me to try... Yes French are nasty about being clean, that's why I never try products directly... XD
Great job! When I was with mac this group of teens came through and one guys literally stuck his hands in the back of his pants and scratched his ass and then dug his stank fingers in about 12 shadows that were promptly thrown out
okay. this confuses me so much! because (i will admit) i used to swatch shadows with my fingers. so i went to a mac store the other day and asked if they had a q-tip i could use to swatch with...and they told me to use my finger....whhhhaaaaat? lol.

Heck even the testers in the MAC store looked terrible too(not US, caribbean branch in T&T). It's bad but i usually just buy the product without testing it. I'm way too scornful to even want to use the testers.
youen2 2 years ago
they start looking horrible because customers who think it's ok to stick their fingers where they don't belong, keep our products from being sanitary. We do our best to clean our testers and I know since I work with Clinique we are very very sanitary and this is a reason why.
cutelovelylisa 1 year ago
Thanks for this video. I work at Sephora and clients who come in and double dip etc. we have to throw the product away and make a new tester. That means less hours I get to work :(

AMAZING! i love the annotation of watching your kids at the counter, i work at a mac counter and im always having to sweep up powders and broken foundation glass from kids just being crazy.. some parents see their kids doing it and dont even say SORRY!!! uuugh!
another thing i think is crazy, is when people ask me in a pissed off tone "how do you expect me to try this on if you clipped the wand off?" like are you serious..ew.
VenusEnvy209 2 years ago
Wow, some people are just dumb and rude. I wouldn't even think of taking a kid with me to any cosmetic place.
MsMartinez2009 2 years ago

So was the one in NYC...big cities are prone to nasty fingerprints, lint, hairs, and smears. ugh.
pintobeans77 2 years ago
i totally wish make-up counters here are like that. i live in malaysia. all the testers are gross including the branded ones and the make-up artists keep wanting to put makeup on you directly without any kind of cleaning/disposable applicators. they just use the ones that come together with the tester and have tried it on 22 million people before u. sigh. i rarely buy makeup as a result until i'm sure i need it.
marcialim 2 years ago
that's disgusting... glad ours aren't like that. I work at Clinique and we never double dip and always use new q-tips, cotton balls are whatever else we use to apply the product with. I would never let someone touch me with something that hasn't been sanitized.
cutelovelylisa 1 year ago
The fact that some people actually USE testers makes me not want to try them out. It disgusts me :) So these tips? Fantastic! I wish more people would do that.

Another tips for shoppers in general - or should I say NON-SHOPPERS! When you have NO intention on purchasing a product or are not genuinly interested do not waste the "persons there to help's" time..there are serious customers standing by!
jordantresvante 2 years ago 5
Exactly AMEN!
ArtistaMaquillaje 2 years ago
exactly I hate when you have to stand by and listen to someone question a product like they are having a chat and then walk away. I always thank the person and tell them that I will have another look around but will most likely be back.

lol you(re talking so faaaast. Hum in France the salesclerk would look at me curiously if I ask them to wash the brush for me to try... Yes French are nasty about being clean, that's why I never try products directly... XD
