hey erm i dont know much about swords but i wanted to ask are rapiers and side swords more or less the same type of sword as in could u se techniques of rapier for side swords?
@TheKrodgib Sideswords typically have a slightly shorter and slightly heavier blade making them better suited to cutting. You can mostly use rapier and sidesword techniques with either sword, with a few exceptions, such as some sidesword guards rely on threatening with the edge, not a good idea with a rapier.
@TheKrodgib Agreed with Nikos, also there is a matter of civilian vs militaristic standpoint. Most militaries were equiped with sideswords during the rapier craze, and they had different schools for them as well. Marozzo's Opera Nova deals with Cuth and thrust while Capferro deals with thrust style rapiers. Hope this helps.
@boltdragon31 it'll help you with your footwork, judging distance and lunging jabs like Bruce Lee, fencing had a big influence on his fighting philosphy
quick question. is a rapier a good way for a self-taught fighter (which is the only real way i can describe myself) to get formal training? or should i take those first official steps with a different weapon? maybe the wrong place to ask this, so i apologize in advance
Thank you not to many good instructional video's out there, I just started rapier combat with heavy rapiers in a later middle ages street dueling format, this will add some good tools to the box.
im 49. but i must do this! Rapiers are beautiful! and a Rapier and a mask and the suit cost way less than a full medieval gear=Broadsword, helmet, chainmail, shield, dagger, axe, spear, halberd, etc! big big money for that!
@acerb45666555 Yes they are and yes you should! Being 49 is not a barrier to learning, we have members in their late 50's in the club and I know some great fencers in their 60's! Yes it is indeed a lot cheaper to get in to.
@maeljin I keep getting asked this, just been so incredably busy recently with work and at fencing doing all the testing for the Knights shop swords. Will get back on it shortly.
Looking for vids of sparring/teaching using cloak. The organization I am with all sparr with dagger of buckler. I just want to be different and therefore am trying to master the cloak. Any thoughts or areas I can look, ie: vids
