1) Open My Computer and hit Alt.

2) From the menu bar, click on Tools then Folder options

3) Hit the 'View' tab, and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"

4) Go back to the file, F2 to rename, and change the ZIP to IPSW. Remember to remain the dot.

Ok I don't want to come across as a total n00b but when I download the firmware do I download the firmware I want or the firmware that is already on my iphone. I ahve an iphone 3GS (locked to AT&T) that is presently on 4.2.1, and I guess I'd rather downgrade it to 4.1 because that way I can use Cydia and have my jailbreak be untethered. What should I do?

for cydia,safari problems! i can help you with this, what you do is plug your idevice back in and go threw redsnow until the selection screen then select "just boot tethered right now". you will have to do this every time the iphone gets shut off (even if its a reboot). this is because all jailbreaks atm for iphone 3gs with the new bootroms are tethered until they finish the new jailbreak. it was supposed to come out christmas time but its was delayed because of bugs.

i cant get passed the part directly after you hold all the button things. i have seen from other videos, a pineapple is suppossed to show up, but it doesnt on mine. mine gets stuck half way, and stops where it says its exploiting limera1n. i have the 4.2.1 (8C148) firmware. any help? i have downloaded multiple ipod firmwares to do this and still no luck. >_>

You should make another video on how to do the untethered version. It is a little more complex, but it is well worth it, especially for the iPhone 4. It involves Terminal and that other option that you said not to check.

Sadly, no, it will not be untethered. I was about to jailbreak 4.2 because on Cydia, they said that it would be an untethered jailbreak for iPod Touch 2G devices, but they didn't specify it as non-MC Models. Luckily, Cydia had backed my SHSH Bliobs and I got a Restore down to 4.1. YAY FOR ME!
