I love a man with well groomed hair. I wish men would still use Brylcreem. It doesn't have to be greasy because a little goes a long way, hence the slogan a little dab will do ya.
My Papa used this until he passed. He had very thick hair at the age of 92, you'd never know he was that age. He was a quarter Cherokee, and he had dark black hair without ever putting dye on it. I'd suggest this to any man with thick hard to manage hair.
I was a kid in the 1950's, and grew up hearing this jingle on TV. It's amazing how such commercial jingles insinuate themselves (intentionally, of course) in people's psyches. Hey, 50 years later, and I can still sing it (before seeing it here on YouTube). I'd say THAT's a successful jingle!
i'm working on a novel that kind of spoofs 40's detective movies - anyway i was researching Brylcreme for a reference to it in my story and found this ... which is fucking hilarious!
Yeah, i used this stuff too. And Vitalis.."with V-7."
Butch Wax was too waxy for me. I think Womens 'Dippity Do' was good if you needed to shape your hair. And probably a precursor to what we now call 'gel.'
Okay, maybe 1955-'56, 'scot'. These Brylcreem ads (and the "Little Dab'll Do Ya'" slogan, with stop-motion animated sequence) were seen and updated for several years until the early '60s....
I have fond memories of this, when serving overseas with the RAF at a base in the Maldives called Gan.This used to be on in the camp cinema as a prelude to the film mainly as a laugh as we all used to sing along to the end song and finished it off with a very loud Hiss, happy days.
wow. I used Brylcreem, Top Brass, Vitalis, all that stuff in the 50's and 60's, then "the dry look" came in around 1970 and I realized putting grease in my hair was a shitty idea.
John P. Atherton, and the words by Hanley Norins. Norins also wrote a book, "The Compleat Copywriter: A Comprehensive Guide to All Phases of Advertising Communication."
Half of what's great about Brylcreem is the scent, it smells like a really clean soap. I just started using it again, I don't like my hair to be too stiff. If I wanted hold, I would use gel.

I use Brylcreem but only to cover a bald spot
I prefer his earlier look, and the scent of Pinaud hair gel.

does anyone know if the original Brylcreem smells good? does it even have a fragrance? i'd like to just get the original...
hg585 2 years ago
It smells sort of lemony, not too strong. Another alternative is Vitapointe, pretty much the same but softer fragrance.

@hg585 It actually (for a product from the 50's) smells pretty good. And it's mild too, so, it won't knock you out.

Are you sure you used only a little dab?
Juliaflo 2 years ago
Actually, I used several dabs. One dab just didn't cut it. Had to have that slicked back look. Changed that oil at least twice a week.
