Yea, the ads can be a pain... fortunately, the overlays can be minimized for a mostly ad-free experience. Those skippable pre-roll ones aren't too bad either - especially when they're about something interesting! XD Thanks for stopping by!
You can definitely see a LOT of interesting shapes and movements in smoke and rain clouds - especially the really big ones... they can be impressive indeed =) Thanks so much for visiting!
You're right - fire plume generated clouds like these are known as "pyro-cumulus", and act very much like "normal" cumulus and cumulonimbus. Water vapor is one of the componants of combustion, and when combined with the fire-produced ash/particulates and cooled rapidly at high altitude, it condenses to form the clouds. In extreme cases, the friction of the particles in the cold, dry air aloft can also generate lightning, as I understand this fire did at times. Thanks for stopping by! =)
This was really a spectacular sight which lasted for several days... it was fairly close and it was hard NOT to get remarkable footage. Too bad it had to have such negative consequences in so many other ways. Anyway - glad you enjoyed the show! =)
@jcmegabyte Right on. I seen some fires from Mount Soledad in San Diego. Yeah so true. I was not in SD in one of their worse fires I think Oct 2007. Yeah awesome work !
Most of the clouds shown are smoke clouds from the fire. The big billowing white towers which look like thunderclouds are known as "pyrocumulus" and act similar to cumulonimbus. I have heard of thunder and lightning being spawned by these clouds, but have never experienced it myself. At the vid beginning there is a mix of natural clouds and smoke clouds. In some scenes, the pyrocumulus clouds go so high that they actually push up the cirrus high cloud layers above them. Amazing sights!
You're right - this fire was started by an arsonist, and I never heard if they ever caught the perp or not. My loose reference to "the plan" was more aimed at how some forces in nature, once initiated (by whatever means; arson, lightning strike, etc.), can be destructive as well as beautiful, and are ultimately part of the natural cycle of things; life and death, destruction and rebirth, etc. Sorry for the confusion! :-)
By the way...do you prefer stills or video for timelapse..I noticed you mentioned that you used both to compile the vid. I was thinking that timelapse stills have a massive impact on the shutter life of a camera, whereas the camcorder doesn't. But the camcorder file would I expect to be enormous and possible wouldn't have the duration that you sometimes are looking for in timelapse.
Thanks for the view and great comments! =) I definitely prefer stills. I can shoot oversize and crop/downscale, and the clarity is better without inter-frame compression. Video files run huge with limited recording time like you mentioned, but my DSC was busy with wide-angle shots so I used video for the short zoomed bits. DSLR shutter MTBF (100k frames) is definitely an issue. Even my S5 shutter finally died (after 1.1 million frames!), but was repaired and is now back in service! :-)
Just gotten into timelapse and your vid is inspirational...beautifully edited and synched to the soundtrack. Most people don't know the investment in time and effort and planning to produce this outcome...well done and hopefully we will see more of your work. Gary - Australia.
That was a very erie-looking morning - natural cumulus mixed with smoke plume and lit by the sun from the opposite side. Thanks for checking it out! =)

Yea, it's pretty sad to see right after the fire - there's not much left. On the brighter side, there will be a LOT of new growth within a few years, which couldn't happen in an old-growth ecosystem choked with underbrush, such as happens in these un-naturally fire-suppressed areas. Hard to tell which is worse - occasional natural fires, or rarer long-term devastating ones...
@jcmegabyte Yeah, but still, many of those trees had been there for hundreds of years. Its gonna take a while to regrow. Don't think I'm gonna go camping there for a while.
