@0091Eng i heard gaddafi had like 400 fighters (maybe the information is false?) before they got bombed and the runways were destroyed. there's no way NATO would expect an attack in such numbers. Yes, the planes would be destroyed eventually, but they could cause a lot of damage against NATO navy before they do. @brox114 Try again. The majority of the starfighters were lost to safety and malfunction accidents. The Migs at that time were certainly in the same boat. Overwhelmingly it was the starfighters replacement, the Phantom that got its ass kicked by the MIGS. Unfortunately for their counterparts U.S. pilots had a winning record simply due to combat training. Its unbelievable how much better the U.S. pilots where in those times. Sad now that we rely on such superior technology to do the job.

Phantom is a third generation fighter, so it had advantage against Vietnamese MiG-17 and 19 (which are first generation jet fighters) and early MiG-21's (second generation). F-4 E counterpart is MiG-23 which is better in maneuvarability, acceleration, close and BVR combat and has also better avionics. However, Vietnam didn't have MiG-23's.
US pilots were better than Korean and Vietnamese, but not better than Soviet. Soviet and USA's pilots were pretty much on the same level.
