Phelps is probably one of the most tested swimmers at the Olympics. He even openly encouraged people to test him for drugs. And by the way, what the fuck is your problem? The Olympics are supposed to support global cooperation, not to spur on discrimination and prejudice against America.

I was talking about 400 IM and 200M Back. 400 Im is his best event besides 200 Fly, but 200 Back he is in the top 3 with lochte. Phelps would have to add 200 back to his program if he wants 9 golds. I dont know if thats his plan or not though
Don't be so sure...........Michael is the best swimmer who's ever lived and anything could be expected from him. I think he will end up dominating both races sooner or later. The 100 back is the first to fall under his dominance.

breaking WR is more common nowadays cuz training techniques have improved over the years... back in 1972 those who broke WR had to be amazingly good and born to swim. and its not that it's easy to break WR, but a lot of swimmers are sharing the same competitive level, so many of them break a WR by hundreths of a second just to see it get broken a few months later by hundreths of a second

Phelps never equaled Spitz. Spitz got 7 Olympic Gold Medals, all of which were World Record times, 5 individual and 2 relays. 5 world records out of 8 swims isn't quite there yet. If Phelps is able to do that in the Olympics, I shall bow down before him and name him Best Swimmer of All Times.

Daniel, you have to realize that back in Spitz's time, people didn't know so much about biochemistry as they do today. Training would be totally different, nutrition would be different. Also, technology wasn't as advanced. Spitz in Spitz's time was better than Phelps is in his own time.
I'm not saying Phelps isn't good. Far from it!! He is amazing, and I'm amazed and jealous of his abilities. As soon as he gets 7Olympic Golds in 7 World Records will he be as good as Spitz, and I hope he does it
you can't compare two athletes of two different generations. Spitz has less competition back in the 70's. Today is more competitive and that's why Phelps doesn't dominate his style as much as Spitz did back them. Competition wasn't that good back them, so you should not say that Spitz is better than Phelps.
I'm not saying he's better, but that he achieved more. There was less competition back then, which is why it's such a challenge for Phelps now, and that's why I admire them both.

I recently read a few articles explaining the advantage of height to a swimmer. It's a fact, the taller you are, the more distance you will gain over a short swimmer. Most of the male swimmers who make the Olympics are close to 6'5. Don't think any of them are below 6 foot.

women swimmers are usually below 6 feet or around that range. Amanda Beard is 5'8 and I do think most of the women swimmers are her height. There are only a small % of women medal winners 6 foot or taller.

It takes a great technique to be a top class swimmer. Even if you have the best muscular endurance and strength you are not going to win unless you have the best technique. That is the major difference between swimming and land sports

Agreed. I get the same reactions from people. I am 6'6" and everyone says "That's a waste of height". Well guess what, basketball is a waste of time. If you are tall, your destiny doesn't just lie on the basketball court. There are very few sports in which being tall is not a benefit. People just need to quite being so narrow minded.
Ay bro, 6'6" is a great height for competitive swimmers. I think Phelps is the same height too! You have a long/big wing span (arms), and longer legs and bigger feet to kick with. I think Ian thorpe is about that same range too, he has like a size 17 shoe, so it helps with his kicks.
Man basketball is so common, there is alot of competition...I say stick to what your passionate about, maybe do basketball on the side. *And always stretch before you swim the doctor told me that, I didn't do that before, and yeah I fucked up my body a bit. I got a messed up shoulders (a bit), and knees, and something is kinda up with my achilles part of my ankles.

What is comes down to is competitive swimmers are SIGNIFICANTLY better than average swimmers, while basketball/football (Insert any land sport here) players are just better than average basketball/football players. So don't let these people get you down. Other sport athletes are a dime a dozen, it takes true athleticism to swim.
For someone to judge swimming or any sport as "sucks", they have to be one who really get into that sport. I thought soccer and volleyball sucked, but as I started to watch and pay attention to the body movements it can be tiresome and a drag to put up with those demands in volleyball and basketball.

Not sure about Lochte beating phelps anytime soon. Michael is way ahead of the competiton.He's just phenomenal. Lochte is a great swimmer though.

I was talking about 400 IM and 200M Back. 400 Im is his best event besides 200 Fly, but 200 Back he is in the top 3 with lochte. Phelps would have to add 200 back to his program if he wants 9 golds. I dont know if thats his plan or not though

Don't be so sure...........Michael is the best swimmer who's ever lived and anything could be expected from him. I think he will end up dominating both races sooner or later. The 100 back is the first to fall under his dominance.

he might coz Cavic is a phenomenal flyer. it's gonna be a cracker. If i were Phelps i'd stick with 200's which are phelps' best races: 200IM, 200back, 200 free and 200 fly and the relays.

yeah right...but can Spitz do a sub 1:03 at 100 breasts, sub 55 at 100 back and sub 1:57 at 200 back? Also, back in 1972, Spitz didn't have to face all these "specialist" in different discipline. It is harder to win, not to mention breaking WR, these days because the standard is so high....Phelps is the best right now in world swimming because he smashes WR in various discipline by body length...not only miliseconds which could be suit-aided.

though i admire michael phelps greatly i dont think he equals mark spitz yet. spitz won 7 gold medals at the olympic games breaking 7 world records. MELBOURNE isnt Olympic and even if it was phelps only broke 5 WR

No... Spitz is much better. Phelps is not even close to Spitzs times. It is so easy to break world records to day. And it does not look like the other competitors are even trying to win at all. :-)

breaking WR is more common nowadays cuz training techniques have improved over the years... back in 1972 those who broke WR had to be amazingly good and born to swim. and its not that it's easy to break WR, but a lot of swimmers are sharing the same competitive level, so many of them break a WR by hundreths of a second just to see it get broken a few months later by hundreths of a second

Phelps never equaled Spitz. Spitz got 7 Olympic Gold Medals, all of which were World Record times, 5 individual and 2 relays. 5 world records out of 8 swims isn't quite there yet. If Phelps is able to do that in the Olympics, I shall bow down before him and name him Best Swimmer of All Times.

Daniel, you have to realize that back in Spitz's time, people didn't know so much about biochemistry as they do today. Training would be totally different, nutrition would be different. Also, technology wasn't as advanced. Spitz in Spitz's time was better than Phelps is in his own time.
I'm not saying Phelps isn't good. Far from it!! He is amazing, and I'm amazed and jealous of his abilities. As soon as he gets 7Olympic Golds in 7 World Records will he be as good as Spitz, and I hope he does it

you can't compare two athletes of two different generations. Spitz has less competition back in the 70's. Today is more competitive and that's why Phelps doesn't dominate his style as much as Spitz did back them. Competition wasn't that good back them, so you should not say that Spitz is better than Phelps.

I recently read a few articles explaining the advantage of height to a swimmer. It's a fact, the taller you are, the more distance you will gain over a short swimmer. Most of the male swimmers who make the Olympics are close to 6'5. Don't think any of them are below 6 foot.

Yes, they would make a good basketball team. :D The longer you are, the longer your stride and the more effective your kick in propelling your body. there is an exception though, Eric Vendt, who is 5'10, i think he broke a record in the Olympics.

women swimmers are usually below 6 feet or around that range. Amanda Beard is 5'8 and I do think most of the women swimmers are her height. There are only a small % of women medal winners 6 foot or taller.

It takes a great technique to be a top class swimmer. Even if you have the best muscular endurance and strength you are not going to win unless you have the best technique. That is the major difference between swimming and land sports

This one guy put his head down of dissapproval as I told him.-->Fuck that, I like to see him swim as many laps as I do. Watch him complain with cramps! lol.

Agreed. I get the same reactions from people. I am 6'6" and everyone says "That's a waste of height". Well guess what, basketball is a waste of time. If you are tall, your destiny doesn't just lie on the basketball court. There are very few sports in which being tall is not a benefit. People just need to quite being so narrow minded.

Ay bro, 6'6" is a great height for competitive swimmers. I think Phelps is the same height too! You have a long/big wing span (arms), and longer legs and bigger feet to kick with. I think Ian thorpe is about that same range too, he has like a size 17 shoe, so it helps with his kicks.

Man basketball is so common, there is alot of competition...I say stick to what your passionate about, maybe do basketball on the side. *And always stretch before you swim the doctor told me that, I didn't do that before, and yeah I fucked up my body a bit. I got a messed up shoulders (a bit), and knees, and something is kinda up with my achilles part of my ankles.

I agree with lyricallyundefined. What is comes down to is competitive swimmers are SIGNIFICANTLY better than average swimmers, while basketball/football (Insert any land sport here) players are just better than average basketball/football players. So don't let these people get you down. Other sport athletes are a dime a dozen, it takes true athleticism to swim.

For someone to judge swimming or any sport as "sucks", they have to be one who really get into that sport. I thought soccer and volleyball sucked, but as I started to watch and pay attention to the body movements it can be tiresome and a drag to put up with those demands in volleyball and basketball.
*Oh eat bananas for potassium, it's good for swimming, less chance for cramps.

Michael would. He's much faster. Don't get me wrong Spitz is great too, freakin' old school...nobody shaved their facial hair or wore swimming caps back in those days.
Spitz had to pave the way for others like Phelps, and Phelps legacy will do the same. I mean people are getting better and faster everyday.
