I was on a 49' Sloop I believe (type of sailboat) not even a quarter mile off the west side looking towards Plymouth when the 1997 eruption took place. I was 5 years old, it is absolutely insane to watch these videos and think that I had been there. The ash caught up to us a few times as we sailed away from the erupting volcano, fortunately for us the ash was much like hard wet mud, and not hot. Absolutely insane. I'd love to go back and visit and experience the island.
@missilynn428 Wow! That is a fascinating story. You sure have a great detailed memory of what happened considered you were a 5 year-old. Where you on vacation in Plymouth with your parents?
@ghana25 Yes I was. My parents and I would always go sailing during the summer. I wouldn't remember a lot of it if it wasn't for video and my parents reminding me.
this is very inspiring to someone who has actually walked on the land now buried by volcanic ash. A truly frightening, yet beautiful place. God bless all those in Montserrat and my mother who is still there today. Truly, my favorite place on earth
Excellent video, thank you very much. I hope they don't re-build the city again. I feel very, very sorry for all the people and animals who lived there.

When volcanoes erupt on towns in Iceland, the Icelanders just build a new one atop the new surface.

@kittycat332 Pliny could've said the same thing about certain areas near Mt. Vesuvius.

I hope they re-build it again! once they know they the volcano is dormant, i don't see why they shouldn't re-build.
