If he does not know how to read Tamil then Hariharan should probably write the song in Hindi so that he will not mess up the words like suthum for suttum etc.. All our great singers now are killing Telugu, Kannada and Tamil. I am not complaining about the pronunciation but they change the words and therefore the meaning.

I can't see how one can compare two singers who are unique in their own ways to say which is better... Hari and Unni are great in their own ways. It just depends onto what appeals to one that makes it their favourite. Just because it is your favourite does not make that version great. For me, Hari's version appeals more than Unni's.

I also find it unlikely that Tamil in its current state is the mother of Dravidian languages, because the Dravidians, as proposed by some, came from Africa. In that case, the mother of Dravidian languages is an African language, not Tamil. Otherwise, the Dravidians were scattered across today's Indian subcontinent, so we don't really know what they were like.

Some of the ancient languages in the world are Sanskrit, Tamil, Hebrew, Arabic, Greek and Latin. Tamil and Sanskrit are completely unrelated languages. Tamil is the mother of all the Dravidian languages including Malayalam.

Sivakasi is in fact a good place to make similar paper rockets that are not that expensive and they work all the time. :D.

As a linguist, I'll have to disagree with you. Tamil is a diglossic language, meaning that there is more than one variety of the same language or dialect being used in the same society. Many words and some word order have been taken from Sanskrit in the H, or high, variety, that is used more in the written form, and for specific contexts in spoken language. The L, or low, variety, on the other hand, is what is usually spoken by people informally. As far as I know, it's not written.

I do accept some of the minor entities of the Tamil taken from Sanskrit for later usage. I do know about the immigrants from the Southern Russia through the Khyber Pass!

Firstly, what kind of title is Mr Linguistics? Secondly, Sanskrit was influenced by proto-Dravidian, so it's a big circle the way I see it. If you're going to see originality, no language has that. Both Malayalam and Tamil descend from proto-Dravidian. They're sister languages, so I'll appreciate not dividing them like this. Only the proto human language, if any, has originality. That, and Nicaraguan Sign Langauge. Also, Tamil's diglossic nature is not localised. It's quite deep and wide-spread.

It is not Suththum but 'suttum vizhi' and similarly not 'vaazhai' but 'vaalai' . Hence interpretation based on these words are wrong. Overall the effort is stupendous.

really amazing rendition. Kallayum urukkum kural. I keep coming back to this video. One glitch though. Few lines in the lyrics is not right. He sings Suttum as Suthum vizhi. vaanakarumai kollo became kollo (ll as in kollu, the grain), Vaalai kumari became vaazhai kumar, maruva kaathal became maruvai!
