Read the description to the video: If the Su-27 was not hampered by civilian speed restrictions in US airspace and was not intending to level off at FL100 then she would have reached that height in 15-20 seconds from lift off.... almost comparable to our English Electric Lightning with an initial climb rate of 50000 ft/min which managed this feat some 50 years earlier! ;)
@perez1975 dude, maybe ur confused?? because it says 10 000 feet and not meters...2 different things..and if ur so dumb to understand wt um saying then u can simply check it on google....pilot.. xDDD
I hope the buyer of this aircraft doesn't stumble into a restricted airspace by mistake. If a couple armed Eagles scramble to intercept and get visual on a big Flanker, things might get a bit more sticky than they would if you were in, say, a Cessna 182.
@aut60miles Angels 10 (10.000 feet, using the german point for thousands) is not high, its actually still in the low altitude region, above it are the medium altitudes up to aroud angels 30 around 10 Kilometres altitude, After it come the high altitudes up to more than 25 kilometress or 100.000 feet. Though there is only one aeroplane that is rumored to have flown higher than angels 100, ok two the X-15 and the SR-71 even if the maximum altitude of the SR-71 is officially 85.000.
dont forget the mig 25 (one of the prototype mig-25Ms to be precise) which still hold the recognized absolute altitude record for a jet aircraft under its own power at 123,520 ft (although admitidly it cant sustain this altitude, but still not bad for 70s tech)
@jorgemdllin The buyers wish to remain anonymous. Each flight hour costs approximately $25,000. We believe these two Su-27s will be the only ones licensed as civilian aircraft in the USA for a long, long time.
There are planes ...& then there are planes but the flanker carries itself with a awesomeness that is different then that of any other plane....it is majestic yet effcient in rude sort of way but as a whole nothing touches it.....classic & bad to the bone..
I've heard differently. Russian aircraft and engines are not as delicate as western systems. I don't think Russian aircraft are really that different from western but when you get to some of the countries that use them it's safe to say they are abused. I've been on many Aeroflot liners and the differences are minimal.
Noted Skyward. And for dmcfarli. Since when is America selling their military aircraft engines to Russia and China? Or are we talking about commercial? Russian aircraft engines are not to be scoffed at, they are widely respected the worls over.
American engines, both civilian and military are more reliable. Russia makes good military jet engines but they have a very underdeveloped civilian aeronautics industry.
I stand corrected; the Flanker's engines are indeed Lyulka AL-31Fs which are 1970s designs. Yes "old" GEs and P&Ws had their share of gremlins in the 70s but they've come a long way.
So far in fact, that Russia's Irkut and China's COMAC just selected P&W and GE respectively to power their next generation aircraft despite the fact that both build AF-31s and other advanced Russian turbofans.
I think the Russian engine manufacturers just got pwned.
> So far in fact, that Russia's Irkut and China's COMAC just selected P&W and GE
ORLY? You got wrong information, just becouse they can do this by military doctrine: both China and Russia counted USA as "potenional enemy". Also USA's engines are less advanced technically as Russian's (3D-vector thrusting).
Examples:
F-22's Pratt&Whitney F119-PW-100 have Thrust to Weight ratio: 0.11
Yep, American engines are so much less advanced... maybe if they ate themselves every thousand hours like the Soviet piles they could be considered more advanced. If that's what advanced means. LMAO.

Almost all fighter engines are derivatives of civilian models. Reliability and service life are the primary drivers in the civilian market but have obvious military advantages as well. The entire Russian and Indian Flanker fleets were just grounded indefinitely due to engine failures after a number of fatal crashes this past year. 2D TVC is more reliable and nearly as capable as 3D TVC.

I just read about this on a forum. It turns out this plane was stripped almost to the frame. If this plane was fully equipped and loaded for war it could not have done this. Not that the war version isn't a good plane. Sukhois are BADASS.
@Scrat335 : Your "forum" information is incorrect. The climb rate seen here is less that 1/5 of what it's capable of. The pilot wasn't even trying hard to climb quickly. Read the information block next to the video for more details.
@SkywardMedia it carries air to air missiles which would hardly weight down this big agil quick plane, pretty sure if it were miltary it would get better service and perform like 20 x better.

Lucky Bastards! I envy the pilot so much! I hope this becomes more common to see these 4th generation war birds in our sky's. It would be nice if the US government would start to sell air worthy 14s and 15s instead of chopping them in half.
