I've been in choirs for eight years, and I honestly don't think Josh "murdered" this. I'd like to hear everyone criticizing him sing the song a quarter as well

I love the fact that Josh stepped out of his comfort zone and sang the song, because Ben asked him to. Very cool!! I was there. The crowd loved it!! :)

i wish i had died before i heard this song being murdered. josh sounds like utter crap. he sings the tuning note then immediately sings off key after. i would be disgusted with myself if i sang like that and i've never had a lesson in my life. give up josh groban.
@heesakkersj Hey be quiet man, I bet you're just mad that Josh Groban is famous and has a really good singing voice. Next time you post these types of comments....think about what you're saying. Have you heard of the famous saying "IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO SAY ANYTHING RESPECTFUL/KIND THEN DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL!"
I've never heard the original (I'm watching this cuz o' Josh ) But his voice never fails and it sound wonderful to me! especially when hes singing in his head voice, sighhh
Does anyone know if anyone's got an MP3 of this? I am absolutely addicted to this video atm. Josh's voice with this style of song is capitivating for me. Would love to hear him sing some David Gray songs.
I was there and it was wonderful!! The crowd loved it that Josh was willing to just come out and sing it "off the cuff". What a moment!!! Everyone around me was singing.
I really dont think its about who sang it better or if Josh sounds flat (which I dont agree with). It's about two very talent artists sharing their talent with each other and their fans. It's about giving that audience a special experience in that moment. And from the sound of the crowd they really enjoyed themselves.
@GM154 Well I guess I wouldn't know the technical side of singing. I appreciate my music for the intent, lyrics and heart. As a true Josh Groban fan (I have seen him in concert 8 times) I just know that he is a true artist and if he misses a note or two I am ok with that. And I love his version of Music of the Night...but as you can see...I'm biased. :)
@themusic8424 I absolutley agree :) he is incredible!!!
and honestly, i could care less how flat or sharp he is, all singers cant be perfect when performing live. Actually he might be the only one that will ever get that close to perfect :]
and Music of the Night was almost made for him :) I really enjoy it, even if it is a wee bit off. Who cares :PPPP
glad to finally meet someone who's actually cool with imperfections, and listens for the love and soul rather than the techncalities of it:)
I love that Josh always steps out of the box and does something different. It's versatility and the little flaws that I love in live performances - it makes it real and exciting.
You know, for Josh being a tenor, he's really pushing through a lot of this song. That's what is making him sound funny. Josh is a powerhouse and Ben just kind of goes there effortlessly.
Josh is actually a baritone and even though he says he's a "tenor in training", his upper range really hasn't expanded that much in the almost 10 years I've been listening to his stuff. His falsetto, however, is gorgeous, and he should have sung this one like Ben, with just his head voice, not much chest, and forget about belting out. Love Ben's touching video of this song too. And don't get me wrong - Josh doing what Josh usually does is pretty fantastic too.
He's actually a tenor. Baritone's can't go anywhere near that high. Why should he sing "like Ben," so he doesn't outsing him with the guy's own song? That's the best part, he overpowers everyone without TRYING. Sorry to tell ya, you know NOTHING about singing. Singing from the "head" it's actually throat, makes ones sound like they have a cold ala Leann Rimes - it sounds HORRIBLE. This song isn't even any good and he still makes it barable.
Not trying to contradict anything here, but the classification, however "made up" it sounds of Josh's voice is a "Baritenor" and that's not official, but There's a lot of guys who aren't fully baritones, but aren't tenors either, thus the name "Baritenor"
Somebody already said it, but Josh is not a tenor, he's a baritone. I personally don't think he's pushing through, he's got a beautiful falsetto. Just that's just my opinion. :-)
he is a baritone, but he's currently training to become a tenor. it's a difficult transition which may be why he sounds flat occassionally, but i still think he sounded awesome.
Another one that knows NOTHING about singing. He's not PUSHING anything. That's HOW he sings, he doesn't look like he's trying at all so I'm wondering if you're watching the same video. And he doesn't sound ANY funny, except maybe to a wannabe like you that doesn't know what a good singer sounds like. "Josh is a powerhouse and Ben just kind of goes there effortlessly." - You just contradicted yourself. Josh is the powerhouse so he's the one that does it effortlessly. Ben is a subpar singer.
@soul416 Someone is just over critical about other statements.... I'm sorry, but when I see someone get this defensive it annoys me. FYI Baritones can go that high, as they are in between Basses and Tenors. And he should have sung in his head voice as it would have eliminated most of his flat notes. I like the fact that he tried to push his vocal limits though, regardless of how it sounded. And yes, he is pushing. Hence the sound of air forcefully expelling. Perfect pitch rocks don't it? =p
It's just that it's a freakin' rock song and he sounds awesome. This isn't opera, people!!!!!! It's frustrating to hear so-called experts show off. I'd like to see any of you TRY to sing 1/4 as well! I love this video and it get ruined by all of the critics who can't be positive about anything.
It's a shame that most people can't hear how incredibly flat Josh Groban's vibrato makes him sound. As Randy Jackson would say, the whole thing was pitchy dawg.
I;m sure you think you know what you're talking about exit24founder, but josh was not pitchy at all,He has a different type of voice than Ben Folds but both men bring something special to this song. I'm sure Folds thought so too or he wouldn't have asked Josh to sing it with him
Watching this was just incredible...never ceases to amaze me how versatile Josh's voice is. I hope to hear more songs like this on his new album. LOVE YOU,JOSH!!!!
There should be a law against this much Awesome being on stage. Seriously! Ah!!!! <3 I am so excited to hear what they worked on in Nashville together!!!
Sorry, have to disagree. Didn't hear a flat note in the whole song. He had to switch a lot between his chest and head voice but otherwise, he was spot on, IMO. This is, however, a song better suited for Ben's voice and it is, after all, Ben's story, Great rendition by Josh, in Josh-style.
it's hard for a trained singer to not use vibrato because comes from trained muscles. It's like asking a weight lifter to use his back when he lifts. He doesn't strain when he sings.
There is one point of criticism in this performance, though. Even though I like the stylistic difference, I think Josh was having a bad night, because he is -seriously- flat on some of these notes. That's really not like him, either, which is a shame.
Oh, no..I know that. I meant that I'm excited to see what NEW SONGS they've come up with for Josh's new album. Ben was one of the first people Josh worked with for his album.
oh ok...lol i forgot they worked together.... ugh i should be stripped of my grobanite status for not remembering that :) yeah i am so excited to hear the new album!!!
