This is my favourite by far - the world is divided into those who were priveleged to see Rory play live and those who didn't . This doesn't have the energy of being at one of his performances, (unfortunately they haven't found a way to record that yet, other than in memories), but this is so much better than just having vinyl / cd.
Bollocks - you can get a Danelectro electric sitar on ebay for less than £425...which is, I believe, the one he played. If there were only 50 in the world, they'd be worth more than that.....
Ok just clear up the choral sitar issue from someone who has played one of each (guitar for the last 15 years, choral sitar for two days at a friends and a sitar) . The instrument is a guitar - it has an altered bridge that simulates the sound of string buzz from a real sitar. It has a separate section with harp tuned harmony strings with a similar bridge adaptation. It is tuned and strung like a guitar with a guitar scale length and fret board spacing - this is a guitar - end of.
it sounds only slightly like an indian sitar, nothing more. I own an indian sitar, it has about 22 strings, and is a bloody nightmare to tune. You have to hear it to believe it. It's like being transported thousands of years back through time. it would be dam near impossible to re-create the sound of it
NO. It buzzes like a sitar, but it is not a sitar. That is like taking some violin strings and putting them on an empty ice cream box, putting some pick ups in there and saying "Look, its an electric stratovarius". No, just no.
no but i saw it in an interview with his brother and he said that there was only somthing like 20 of them made and if you don't believe me look for the interview with his brother donal.
What a retarded comment. it's obviously modified fron an original sitar, one where you have it sitting in your crotch whilst you sit on a cushion :S for obvious guitar playing reasons. google the electric sitar b4 you make a worthless comment that you persisted with.
YOU TOTAL DOLT. Try googling sitar and look at how it is constructed. Like I said: It buzzes like a sitar, but it is not a sitar. That is like taking some violin strings and putting them on an empty ice cream box, putting some pick ups in there and saying "Look, its an electric stratovarius".
you still dont get it do you.... the manufacturer's of the instrument that rory is playing on this video call it an "electric "sitar, based on an original sitar with "certain" feature's and sound of the instrument yet obviously it aint a "sitar" ffs.
The only similarity is: it has strings, it has some sympathetic strings and frets (which you can't adjust). You just basically said what I said, you total moron. Try looking back at the history of what I have written, then, SHUT THE FUCK UP.
Yes, he a playing a Coral electric sitar. These were made by dan electro. Very few originals were made because dan electro went out of business right after that. It was made so a guitar player cause
produce electric sitar sounds without having to learn to play the difficult to master original indian version.
My old man asked me if i could download some music by taste or rory gallagher id never heard of them, so i did a bit of research and when i found some of his performances from Live at Montreux OMG blew me away.
guys though i am from the other side of europe i believe tha rory was one of the greatest if not the greatest musicians, rockers, singers, rebel, call it whatever you want, ever lived in the godamned history of man!
Well, damn me, kransnif! This was posted by you 3 days after I joined up here on yt, and I`d have thought that I would`ve found this version of yours before now! I guess it goes to show once again, that Rory didn`t only play one performance, to the only song he knew! Five from me, and thanks...real nice piece, all around.
That "tick-tock, tick-tock" guitar solo he does halfway through to describe Philby's plight (and maybe his own) is amazing. I once saw him describe a cat scratching using only guitar riffs. He was a genius - no question.
reminds me alot of the version on the montreux cd...That he made the song continue and continue made it my favourite song of Rory out of this period! It is wonderful. ANd I love that instrument!
Thanx for posting, but... When was this? It looks like German TV (Rockpalast?)and around 1984 to me, but... ? The horns should be a dead give-away methinks.
the best guitarist of the 60 -70.

It's a Coral "Electric Sitar" ....as well the 6 normal strings, it had several drone strings that gave it it's distinctive dissonant eastern flavour.
