I was 15 when this came out, I heard it today for the first time in years!! Knew all the words and sang at the top of my voice in my car !! Great song... anyone else done that ??

There's great truth in this heartbreaking song, but a truth that's nonetheless partial. We need never be entirely alone, however intense the feeling becomes. Loneliness is natural, a very real and mostly unavoidable part of life; but we can transcend it. It can happen when we identify ourselves too hard & too long with family/partners. But we're linked to everyone, to everything, to ourselves. That's the ultimate family, where all belong. In that sense loneliness is a powerful kind of illusion.
