i used to get the 76 bus from newton heath,i remember having to queue round the block too, return of the jedi, and jaws 3d-they gave you plastic glasses which didnt do anything, also seen brewsters millions here-not a big hit but as a kid i enjoyed it,many happy memories were spent in this picture palace, also remember coming out starving and wondering where the nearest chip shop was-before the bus turned up.
Roxy Cinema was fantastic and always smelled of Zoflora. I was born in 1943 just up the road and from about 9 on i went with my mum and my auntie to the Saturday night flim. My sister and her husband worked there on Saturday kids show time. My mother had nothing in her life but the pictures. Very sad it's all gone now. I live in France but always look at the Roxy spot when i go home.
Just come across this. I knew the Roxy was gone but what a sad reminder of a bygone age. The Roxy and Queens were at the heart of the community in the 50's when I was growing up in Hollinwood and, as others have said, the Roxy was a much loved landmark as well.
Only a cinema, just a place, but somewhere that familys gathered and in mine forever pictures in our lasting memories, you cannot take that away 'Oldham Council'
I was in Manchester a few years ago and only knew where I was when I came off the ringroad by the fact I spotted the Roxy. We use to navigate round the area by cinemas and pubs, now we need a satnav. Give me the pubs and cinemas anytime.
I queued up outside the Roxy in 1978 for 3 hours to watch Grease and 'Lurch' kept popping out in his slippers to keep us all in an orderley line!! Happy Days.
@botch196 Yes, I'll never forget Lurch! He was sometimes a bit scary but quite a character. I remember queuing for hours to get in aswell! Happy days indeed!
I remember watching saturday afternoon matinees, queueing up outside and being scared stiff when 'Lurch' came past, hoping he wouldn't know i'd got sweets and drink in my pockets ha ha
I used to live in Garden Suburbs, we used to walk down Hollins rd, buy sweets on the way and queue up to watch a film. I think the last film I watched was Waynes World. I suppose they call it progress....meh.
Why couldn't it have been converted into a hostel for the homeless, or a sanctuary for animals? I'll tell you why: no-one cares anymore; it's all about money.
Still cant belive its gone! been going there many years and took most my childhood girlfriends there to watch a film.... (you know what i mean) Had sooo many good times there its untrue. I remember getting thrown out once for throwing popcorn from the back row lol. So sad to see it go. My mum and dad used to go when they were kids and i would of liked to take mine when i have em, but all that is left to show is this short video. sad times :-(
I think the old fella who worked there was the manager and the owner of the cinema. The council had been offering him ever increasing amounts of money to bugger off so they could have the land to build the junction off the M60, he told them to bugger off so they built the junction round the cinema. Eventually the O.M.B.C. offered him so much money, and he wanted to retire, that he accepted and it was demolished shortly afterwards. The first film I ever saw was at The Roxy 'The Land Before Time'.
i had some great times going to the Roxy my mum and dad use to take us every friday or saturday night to see all the blockbuster 70s and 80s films when it was Maxi One Maxi Two and Mini the doorman was called Harry everyone called him Lurch cos he was lanky with wiry hair and thick rimmed specs he died about 10yr ago some great memories so sad it had 2 go
Moved round the corner from the Roxy and was looking forward to walking over the bridge to see the latest films. Typical, within a month of me living there, it shut and then flattened. Oldham Council should have done everything to keep it. All they use the site for now is for advertisement hordings and the location of the Hollinwood Christmas tree.
I'm sad that the Roxy is no longer there. I remember queuing round the block to see ET and got turned away because it was full. So many happy memories of seeing so many wonderful films there.
jesus christ i miss this place. it makes me sad when im on the way to manchester i always look where it use to be, had many happy times in the roxy cinema it was small and the floor was always sticky, but it was nice and cosy. i remember watching the spice girls movie there, the first time i ever when pictures with my friends and not my parents was at the roxy when i was ten. :( so many memories.
Terrible that the Roxy went, i spent many a friday night with my mates there. My dad even went before me, oh well ive still got the memories, mmm wonder what ever happened to lerch!!!!
i remember when i was about 10 every saturday my mum used to give me a fiver and my mates got a fiver from their mum's we'd go to the shops and spend about £1.50 on sweets. then we'd walk down to the roxy with our sweets and get in to watch a movie for £3.50. now it's about £15-£20 to get to ashton and get in cineworld :(
Holy Cow!!! The Roxy is gone too. I saw Mary Poppins there as a LITTLE kid in the 60s. I remember the line stretched for miles. Some people didn't even get in and had to come back for the next showing. Is there nothing left of England?????? I think the last movie/film I saw there was Planet of the Apes in a doubl feature with 2001 A Space Odyssey. After that it was the Odeon in Oldham. But when you went to the Roxy you just knew you were going to an old fashioned movie theater. Good job Terry
All comments with foul language or text speech will be consigned to the garbage bin were they came from, you can write what you like and it will stay posted as long it has a semblance of English.
Heartbreaking. This was my local cinema in all the years of growing up in the 50s. I was sad on my last visit to Oldham a couple of years ago to see it left marooned on a giant traffic island but still operating at that time. This is a well produced video and I am full of congratulations - not least for using my favourite Barbra Streisand!
i remember saturday afternoons at the roxy you could get in for 3d- 6d or 9d at the back happy days
