Thank you - ! Yes, it was a good film; what an excellent memory you have. Having just looked it up, it was a 1988(!) film, titled "Madame Sousatzka". Directed by John Schlesinger - very interesting story of an Indian immigrant family with a pianist protege son - Shirley MacLaine won a Golden Globe and Venice Film Festival award.
