Lol! Why is this thing so much of a hype nowdays, I recall my old Radeon having TruForm (was an exclusive feature of the older ATI cards), a hardware tesselation in fact. Not good enough? Want the displacement mapping over a tesselated mesh? Ok, the Matrox Parhelia GPUs had tesselation support with the mapped displacement of the newly formed vertices, wasn't really used anywhere though. Old tricks come new :)

Tessellation debuted on the Radeon 8500 (look up Truform) and was first used in Serious Sam\SE. Obviously it wasn't as advanced as DX11 but it did the same thing, add more detail.

@rcloud7 its subtle...but if you look at the breasts (not being a digital perv here) as the camera pans to the side, the tessellation version is very smoothly curved whereas the non-tessellation version is essentially made up of a few straight lines to make the curve. In many cases, it is not very noticable, but as the tech advances and the use becomes more in depth and prevalent, the immersion of the enviornments will become much better.

There was no AMAZING tessellation, the tessellation happens on the armor pieces and hair accessories. Pointless use of tessellation if you ask me because, as a game asset, the objects being tessellated would never need to be tessellated. A simple normal map would suffice, but that is just my opinion.

Tessellation performed on the GPU, look at a game in d3d9 or d3d10 then look at one using d3d11. The detail is being added on the GPU side and makes things look amazing. Though in this video, most likely due to compression, you need to look real close.

So Tessellation looks to me to be a more advanced form of bump-mapping ~to be distortion mapping, where it nudges the geometry based on the texture... (perhaps using virtual vertex points that are not really there in the model). I can see why people would like it.

I've seen examples of a rectangular polygon ramp textured in stone bricks, and made into a 'stepped staircase' with Tessellation applied; (presumably using vertex points that did not originally exist in the model).
