  • What kind of control pedal are you using? LIke a roland EV-5 or something?

  • I think it was a Boss FV50L.

  • Oooo cool, i have one of those haha.

  • it sounds so scary...hey make bttr use of it than to contact the ETs! ):\

  • i got a quick question, can you still use this without the brain? can i just plug this into my computer and play?

  • You can. You just won't have the digital sounds. :)

  • How do I get one of these?

  • the company is called synesthesia corp. you can go to their website called mandaladrum to get one.

  • where can u get one???? lol

  • these things are the coolest shit on the fucking planet.

  • where do you live. that looks just like oakland hills

  • I'm expecting to see some UFOs' or something haha

  • I want one of the red ones so bad.. I have a USB Mandala and it's just not the same (even on my nice laptop)

  • Why do you say that? (what kind of laptop are you running?)

  • I'm running an Asus M50v... The reason I say it is because the virtual brain is much more confusing (though it comes with some great features). Plus it sucks having to carry my laptop to every gig ;)

If you're thinking of buying one, then of course start off the USB Mandala. If you have the money though, get the red one with the real brain..

  • HEY, quit zooming in on my house!

  • Are you using Danny Carey Vic Firths? Cause it looks like it, and besides, they're the most purpose-serving out there.

  • They serve their purpose more than others out there? Right, sure. A stick serves it's purpose as a stick more than any other stick.

    You're an idiot.

  • san francisco? oakland?

  • this and an ondeas martenot (see radiohead) would be awesome in one song

  • MUST... HAVE... ONE...

  • Danny Carey didn't make these, but I think he endorses this series, maybe. Synesthesia is the name of the developer.

    They're really cool though.

  • Danny Carey designed the mandala with the developer.

  • It was designed by Danny Carey and Vince De Franco from Synesthesia.

Synesthesia are the same guys that worked on the D-Beam.

  • sounds nice... dont kno if my computer could handle V 2.0...

  • did carey actually invent this thing or has it been around for a while and he popularized it? I bet it cost several hundred dollars. Judging by this guys pad ,and its location, i don't think he had any trouble purchasing it. Ne way is there any tuning for this? or do u just plug it in and fuck around with the settings?

  • last time i checked at the manufacturer's web site, they go for $999 each.

  • Nah dude not anymore, they go for $350 now! Better get one before they go up.

  • thats the new model they stilll make the $999 model

  • what part of Hollywood is this in ? nice house. :)

  • Beautiful pad, I hope to get one soon. The tones are as crystal clear as expensive synthesizers, so it's good to pedal up some effects with. A ring modulator would sound nice.

  • cost on something like this is?

  • the red mandala is no longer made, but v2.0 is purple and goes for less than $400.

  • This is amazing, I want one sooo bad.

  • is the contraol pedal lide a digitech whammy or some kind of pitchbender? cause thats what it sounds like

  • Sounds beautiful :) immersive. I wish I had one and had someone to play that also xD

  • There are 2 versions. Version 1.0 is 1000.00 and includes a hardware "Brain" It contains preset and editing functions for the Drum... Version 2.0 is 349.00 from their website and includes a Mandala Drum & a software called "Virtual Brain" for PC & Mac which will do the same things that the 1.0 Brain, like more editing or librarian functions...The advantage of the 1.0 Hardware system, you can take it on gigs without dragging a computer along, or danger of crashing a computer during a gig.

  • no they're only $349! check their website mandaladrum.

  • if i had 1000$ id buy one

  • Damn!!! Its $1000!?!?!?

  • yea man...i looked it up on musicians friend and other places...even ebay and there aren't any...i wish they weren't so much

  • well $1000 is nothing compared to how many different sounds it can make. i heard it can produce over millions

  • dude i was on their site and you can get a software for this were is has 6000 sounds from a ludwig black beauty.... when you add the fact that is kicks ass to a 400 dollar black beauty... how can you go wrong when it costs 350?

  • i heard there's a $349 mandala drum coming out. you can connect a bunch to your computer by usb and build a kit. i'm gonna add 3 of them to my acoustic setup. it's about time!

  • Hell ya. I was checking out the site about 5 minutes ago. the biggest thing especially for me, is that its amazingly only $350. For somthing as advanced as this, thats a kick ass deal. Get a few, hook them up, and jam away. By the way, the stuff the guy is playing in the video, i somthing i could sit in my room and play all day. i love that shit.

  • Truly remarkable instrument tool...or so it seems at this point. What is amazing is that these can add thousands of dollars worth of sound to your kit for only $350. Program them as cymbals, drums, synth...etc. With up to 7 zones you can essentially add 7 new instruments every time you play.

  • i wonder how it works....

  • Santa can send me one of those for Christmas...LOL!!!

  • i dont think santa can even afford one of those things.

  • true dat

  • I think this guy did about three hits of acid before recording this.

  • three hits huh

well proper acid would have fucked him up much more than this

  • wow seeing in the magazine for $1000, i was like no way even if it was designed by danny carey. but reading your description and seeing this thing in action, it does seem pretty amazing. i want it now ^o^

but looks complicated, how is it used?

  • You're really good with this thing man!

  • Even if danny only uses them for accurate sampling to replace other instruments he can't be playing live on his kit, it's capable of MORE. Something liek this has potential to make a HUGE difference for the electronic musician.

  • You can make a whole fuckin song

    with that alone. lol crazy!

  • i want one of those

  • my brain has melted

  • i have those same shoes

  • hahaha lol

  • Wow! Ive never seen this before. evolution of percussion!!

  • I would say some people play them just like this.

  • danny god

  • This is like an entirely different instrument, wow

  • yea thats cool and all....but who the fuck could do that for more than 45 seconds? youd have to be on heroin or some shit to just sit and hit a fuckin circle while it made retarded noises.....go play a fuckin drum set

  • i was in awe watchin for 3 minutes... i could play that for hours.

  • now does this have any tabla sounds, because i know danny uses those a lot, and if so, can you post a video of it so i can hear?

  • There aren't any tabla sounds in the version of the Mandala that I have.

  • Does Danny Carey use this drum in any of Tool's songs?

  • Danny triggers all his samples live and in the studio using MIDI signals from his Mandala pads. 7 Mandalas are a standard part of his kit. He uses prototypes that led to the model you see here. Any non standard drum or percussion sounds or sonic samples you hear on 10,000 Days were triggered by Mandala pads.

  • ooo, so thats how he gets the tabla sound, he samples the sounds into the brain of the mandala. okk

  • he also plays tabla for real though.

  • yea true

  • Is the pad making ALL of the sound in the video?

  • Yes all the sound you hear is happening real-time from the playing that you see. There is no external equipment hooked to the Mandala for this demo. Drawn&Quartered is an out-of-the box preset configuration that you can play with immediately.

  • i don't understand.. so the slightest change in hit can change the sound?

  • how will you ever get the same sound again if you have over a million sounds?

  • just change it to a program that isn't so stacked or make a simpler one and save it to memory. those numbers are just an example of how high the resolution is. mainly, this preset is fun to play because of all the hidden sounds and possibilities!

  • oh that sounds pretty cool

  • Nice stuff

  • What kind of pedal do you use? MANDALA DRUMMERS UNITE!

  • i use a boss FV50L volume pedal. almost any volume pedal that's available can be used as a mandala expression pedal. a regular guitar cable hooks from the pedal output to the brain's expression input.

  • i'd really like to see someone using it as a tabla or even djembe and see how nuanced a natural drum tone it can create. thanks for posting. i'm definately going to start saving for one.

  • How beautiful!

  • that is amazing

  • This thing is great. I've played around with it at a friend's but don't have the money right now to purchase one. This video really shows off what it can do. Thanks man
