Old Alkaline Trio = Some of the best music ever written.
They're still great, but they've lost a lot of their soul and sheer grit that always made the Alkaline Trio so amazing. Not that new Alkaline Trio is bad in any way, it's just not the same.

I'll disagree with the "From Here to Infirmary" statement. "Good Mourning" was the shit. It started to change a lot with the dawning of "Crimson", which brought on a whole new style of Trio we had never seen. More metaphorical, though keep in mind that at this time Matt was also starting his side project Heavens, which is influenced heavily by The Cure and Joy Division. So I think that is what affected the style and meaning behind Trio. They waned from direct meanings to more metaphorical ones.
