You technically shouldn't turn your thermostat completely off when you leave the house. Objects all over the house retain heat and give off heat as well as your heater. If you turn it off all the way, the objects in your house lose heat and it takes more energy to warm them back up so the heat they give out contributes to the rest of the house.
