  • Diolch am postio hwn.

  • Awww it dosn't sound as funny as other welsh stuff! :(

  • WALES4CYMRU name was used from 1982, to around 1988.

  • mea n hen wan

  • I'm from the US, and to me Welsh just seems like such a fascinating language. From the first time I heard it, I wanted to learn it immensely.

  • @electrogeek77 its the similar to the language the romans and julius caesar met on the south coast of england...old skool

  • haha galed i credu roedd hyn ddim ond 23 mlynnedd yn ol

  • im english and i just gotta learn Y Gymraeg

  • It's kinda cool to have a second language which is completely different to the official one in the country you live, you can use it as a secret language when you want to have a bit of privacy. ;P

  • No it's charming and lovely. Feels familiar and foreign at the same time.

  • Yeah just like you

  • is welsh a difficult language to learn? I've heard it's quite easy.

  • look at the hair, hahahaha i cant believe they thought that looked good, hwylus iawn

  • Mae'n rêl neis i gallu gwylio'r hen S4C, Diolch am postio hyn i fynny!

  • Welsh

  • No, believe it or not, some people who live in Wales speak Welsh. I admit, not everyone does.

  • How much of the country speaks welsh as their main language? just wondering?

  • That does depend on where you are in Wales.

The Welsh Language is very strong here in North West Wales. But the further you go towards England, the more you'll hear English. It's almost the same when you got to South Wales as well.

But here there are a lot of people who would count Welsh as their principal language.

  • wow interesting. So you speak WELSH most of the time since your in a part of Wales where it is real strong and is still spoken?

But just wondering, what about the parts where ENGLISH is their main language. If you for instance, came down to SOUTH WALES where english is spoken mostly, and you spoke Welsh wouldnt that confuse them? or does the whole country know both languages?

  • That's an interesting question. I myself am a Welsh learner, so I speak English at home and Welsh to everybody else.

About South Wales (it gets even more confusing.) They have a completely different dialect of Welsh down there, so it's different again. When I have been down there, it was English that was spoken mostly, but even when I spoke Welsh, the Welsh-speaking people of South Wales had difficulty understanding me.

  • Wow.... lol sounds like a confusing country. But, Interesting though!

What would you say about this video what version of Welsh is this?

  • I think the newsreader is from Mid to South Wales (some people from Mid Wales speak the South Wales kind of Welsh as well lol) and I'm almost certain that Nia Ceidiog (the presenter) is from the Wrexham area, which is North Wales.

    I could be wrong though.

  • How can you tell the difference?

to me it just sounds like its in Welsh

I guess dialect? like I could tell how someone is from the North part of the US than Southerners.

  • There's a difference in the accent as well. The way I spotted it was because of the way the newsreader pronounced certain words.

South Walian is more nasal, I think.

  • Wow.. didnt even notice that.

  • For us, it'd be like trying to tell the difference between an American accent and a Canadian accent. I find it difficult to tell the difference sometimes.

  • lol I find it funny how shes talking Welsh then all of a sudden throws in English words lolololol.

  • Around 20-30% in the south and 99.99999999% in the north!!

More and more people are learning welsh and putting their children into welsh schools. I am doing all of my GCSE's (except english) through the medium of welsh.

  • GCSE? whats that

I wonder why they are putting there kids more and more into these schools? I guess just so they know both languages? Incase they go down south where ONLY WELSH is spoken they can speak it?

  • Its because Welsh people have their own language and they want to learn it. The GCSE exam is the set of exams you take in High School in the UK (15-16 years of age). A bilingual person is more likley to be able to get a job than an english speaker. The only reason there was a decrease in the number of Welsh speakers is because it was not considered important enough at the begining of the 20th century- Now everyone wants to speak the language- it will never die!

  • Even though.... The top part of the country speaks ENGLISH ONLY. They prob know how to speak Welsh, its just they never use it?

I am guessing you live where only ENGLISH is spoken

SO I wonder down there.. do they speak english ( in the part where its only Welsh )?

  • its the other way round acctually. cardiff is basicly all english and plases like caernarfon and anglesea (or shir fon as its known as ther or sir fon as its known as to the rest of welsh speaking people).
