Reminds me of the bare vulnerability of other musicians such as Daniel Johnston, Justin Vernon, and his own brother Brian. Artists like this always make the most wonderful art, and this is a perfect example.
Melencholy, stark & haunting with no absolutely trace of being overwraught or melodramatic. Guess that's whan an honest composition gives us us, and will continue to give us as the years pass & sounds & fads come & go. Damn...simple, eloquent, beautiful. Nice...
Man I just LOVE discovering new music, even when it's old-new music. Been listening to a lot of Alternative lately since I'm sick of most big studio crap, looking for new, fertile grounds & found this! Thanks for sharing, I am a true convert & believer! Damn...Gotta get this album! ...
@redfishradical Yeah, I made the same discovery a few years back. It seems like the discovery of this song and album hit you like it did me. Whatever path led you to it was the right one. This song is one of my favorites of all time. Now, you get to enjoy it for the rest of your life, too.
@redfishradical It's a special, special album. Make sure you get the legacy edition, you get some extra tracks (which I like more than most of the album tracks!) and the unfinished 2nd album, "Bambu". "
I have to admit I never really expected such musical and lyrical depth the first time I listened to Dennis's solo stuff, probably because of his "awesome cool mofo" image. Anyway, this album is just wonderful.
This blew my mind as a youthman and still does. I don't think it generated much of a buzz back in the day. It was not in step with anything. Great records rarely are. Pretty dismal sales as I recall. So things haven't changed that much! Thank You Dennis WIlson.
Hi, The Ladykillers here. We would just like to say, we love Dennis WIlson, after being on his tribute cd "Only With you" back n 2008, it rocked our world!
We have loved him since his Beach Boys days but, the guy is a true talent. This song is one of the best songs to make good vibrations on the planet!!!!!!!!!
Every once in a while, a powerful song comes around that 1 can describe as haunting & chilling. U feel the emotions effects as U listen. U can sense & connect to the expression of pain that is being delivered. The heartache & the struggle all wrapped at once. & the sounds of the song only enhance that sentiment. The lyrics say it all not necessarily having to be clever, subtle or deep. U listen, appreciate & cannot turn away but U know it is real & U will be affected. This is one of those songs.
Every time I hear this song, it moves me to tears. And I'm not talking about a tear trickling down my cheek, I mean a full-on "ugly cry". (No, I don't have an emotional disorder lol.)
i'm almost done reading the beach boys biography......dennis was a fun loving fuck.....he really did hurt alot of girls emotionally, but i don't think he ever meant it... the fun loving lifestyle got the best of him......he was even once quoted as saying he wasn't an artist.....but more of a cluber.....this is really not true,,,,,,my lord those backwards harmonies are fucking lovely! long live the dreamer !
This comes from a kind but troubled heart. He takes you up winding stairs from a dungeon into a beautiful cathedral and back again. Dennis Wilson was underrated by immeasurable miles. Got to get this album on my ipod.
His talent was so underrated and never appreciated or shared as much as it should have been while he was still alive. I love this song so much. And i miss dennis soo much! The part that really gets me is when he says "All things that live, one day must die" :(
As I write this 51,116 viewings of this song have taken place. Many are repeats by those who realise what a significant piece of music this is. Just 51,116 out of an entire world with internet access. That is just so depressing. I just want to put my arm around this guy and tell him that everything will be alright, that somebody really appreciates what he is doing and that life can work out for the best. This song encompasses a mood it is not just music. It is the height of despair and of love.
Tenderly beautiful song. Breaks my heart listening. Sad he had to die too soon. Sad he was so sad. Maybe many of us have to be all broken before we can say what needs to be said, what we can do naught but say, without knowing how much we will help others, yet help we somehow do. We suffer so others may not or not as much. We suffer because it was the only way to find our soul, our reason for being here, even if we may not see it, while others do. Sorry Dennis. Thank you.
If the, "Loneliness is a very special place. To forget is something that I've never done. Silently, silently you touched my face," part doesn't cause you to get a little choked up, I think your heart might me made of stone.
"The saddest three minutes in the history of pop music." That is exactly what this is. Millions of songwriters trying to do this and along comes Dennis Wilson and writes the most perfect lost love song ever. Perfect because it's less a song and more an actual piece of Dennis.
"They say I live a fast life. Maybe I just like a fast life. I wouldn't give it up for anything in the world. It won't last forever, either. But the memories will." - Dennis Wilson
Dennis really had a hard life, living in the shadows of his brothers even in his father's mind, being too trusty about some peoples (like Charles Manson for example), drugs and alcool dependences and finally he was deeply in love with most women in is life but just couldn't keep himself from seducing other women and that leading to the end of is relationships with most of his girlfriends/wives even though it was the last thing he wished for like you can see from most of his songs.
Look at almost any of the early live performances on video. Hi brothers, cousin and friend were the up-front men. Dennis was in the background as the clubber. His "job" was sex symbol. That had to get old after a while, as he matured musically and as a person.
Spent some time with him in the 70's. A gentle soul, as this music reflects. This music should be in a movie, JHP
@PanayotiProductions Hi, I didn't write the comment. Someone in my office has been on my computer and I will find out who that someone is....apologies for any ill feeling. Craig.
@cam68 Seriously, if you're going to be that factually ignorant... then please get off any Dennis Wilson related videos. Dennis had realised the darkness to Charles Manson before any killings and was doing his best to escape. Dennis had nothing to do with anyone's deaths.
his songs were disturbingly prophetic, as well as hauntingly beautiful. "All Alone" begins with the line "If I could live my life again..."
No one writes songs like these anymore. Everyone is working so hard to sound as dispassionate and indifferent in their songs now... Dennis bled onto tape. He doesn't write songs. These are pieces of his soul in audible form.
@PetSMiLEs27 I absolutely agree. I think it is very disturbing how everyone is so obsessed with being "cool" these days and acts indifferent. Dennis was pure soul and the world is a far lesser place without him. Dennis was such a talented human being. I truly believe that had Dennis overcame his troubles as Brian has done that these two would be together creating the most beautiful music ever heard .
@BeachBoy420Beef Thanks for the comments. It's funny, I wrote that when I myself was feeling particularly desperate. I guess I was channeling Denny in a way.
Wow, wasnt expecting that! The saddest thing is that we didnt get to hear enough of Denny and what he could of really done. I must get this album now, an amazing, beautiful piece.
Beautiful...beautiful song. It takes a great amount of character to reveal ones inner side. So melancholy...such a tragedy. But you touch the stars & love forever. Godspeed Sir...*
Some people can only see the debris left behind, created by those who have really LIVED their lives. Those who can only sit in judgement of others miss the point of life. Did Dennis have a problem with alcohol? Yes, But if that's all you choose to see of him, you are 90% blind, my friend. And I pity you. I was lucky enough to know Denny. I consider myself to be blessed beyond words to have been able to know this flawed but loving soul. I suggest you take the time to learn of those you judge.
"Drunken Bum Whore?" He left behind a body of music you could only hope to create. I'll expand on what I said earlier. Those who can only sit in judgement miss the point because they are so full of themselves. The simple fact is this: When YOU can create music as meaningful as Dennis and when you can be as compassionate a human being as Dennis, THEN you have the right to comment. Until then, perhaps it's YOU who probably ought to shut his face. Dickweed.
Denny's voice sounds alot like Thom Yorke at points of this song, which i think is great, i really love this song, and i think that the re release of Pacific Ocean Blue was one of the best releases of 2008.
i had never listened to dennis sing solo before, so i figured I'd check it out. all i can say is my god, if only i could sing like this i'd be a platnum selling artist! he was that good!
That is the sound of a man at four in the morning at 45 years of age who suddenly knows his dreams have slipped through his fingers. If you are very lucky this is as closest to that feeling you will ever get.
Sadly ,it is not the closest I will come,I have felt like this litterally since I was 3-4.
Pretty dam sad when a 7 year old prays to God that he will die on his 8th birthday just to get back at his Mum,So yeah,I understand very much.
But I have never been gutless enough or lacking enough in self confidence or respect that I have to destroy myself with drugs or Alcohol. That is for the weak, wether it be social or for pain relief
Fond memory of Dennis Wilson when I was 14...My friend & I were walking on the Iowa State Fairgrounds @ midnight. A man approached us, asked if we wanted to go on a ride which was shut down. He asked us if we knew who he was, we said, "no,"...he said he was Dennis Wilson. I told him to prove it. He got his CA. license out. He was Dennis Wilson. He had the ride turned on for us (bought us 2 long rides), stood there just to watch us laugh and have fun for a few minutes, then disappeared.
RIP DENNIS WILSON,you were a great man, but even great men fall into drug abuse and never recover, very few have the strength to overcome and for the ones that do overcome the drug habbit i salute you!
This is awesome. Perhaps one of the songs we should have put on that platinum discovery disc we shot into space. Too bad it's not available here in Germany...
If this song by Denny touched you, please do a google search for his song "Cuddle Up." It's an amazing piece from back in 1972. It was supposed to be for a solo LP, but the Beach Boys needed it to fill an album commitment to Warner Bros. so he let them have it. He should have put this out as a solo or even a single. It's a song he wrote for his wife Barbara as his way of telling her that no matter what he does on the road, she is all that matters to him in life. He was so in love with her.
I just finished listening to the double legacy version of POB... this is relevent music, not out of touch or dated by more than 30 years. So un Beach Boys... some great instrumentals, particularly the solo piano variations on disc 2.
I'd never heard this, or anything from his album before, and I'm touched by it's beauty. I drove a cab in LA in'83 and gave him a ride 2 weeks before he died. He was in bad shape and mentioned he had put out an album, and he had recently been kicked out of the band. I sensed the desire in his voice to be recognized for being an artist instead of just a Beach Boy who never contributed much. I think he died a frustrated man.
If I may suggest, I think Dennis was manic-depressive and that contributed heavily to his substance abuse. And yes, he was very frustrated because he never was taken seriously as an artist, with the exception of the other members of the band (even Mike Love praised some of his work). But in a way, he created his own fences. I think he knew that too. He was a good friend to me and, for all his problems, we all loved him and hoped he'd turn things around. His was a truly tragic story. Peace to all
8 people dislike this? Shit, you 8 people? Why are you listening to, Justin Bieber? Oh wait. I forgot your music taste is -0.

Dear Dennis. The only true surfer of the BB's and this album showcases his pure and raw musicality. God bless his soul.

I'm 20 years of age sir, and I suggest you shut your face. Old timer.

Yep, drunken Bum-whore
Waxthumper 2 years ago

That is the sound of a man at four in the morning at 45 years of age who suddenly knows his dreams have slipped through his fingers. If you are very lucky this is as closest to that feeling you will ever get.
jaundicedi 3 years ago 4

Its so SAD the way he died, homeless, unwanted
and sleeping where he could in the Venice Beach area.
And It all ends with Dennis drowning, in the Ocean. Alone with all his family and so called
friends avoiding him completely.

This is awesome. Perhaps one of the songs we should have put on that platinum discovery disc we shot into space. Too bad it's not available here in Germany...

I've never cried listening to a song, but this one touch me deep.
This album is unique, a masterpiece.
It's sad he was never recognized as a great artist before he died.
kaehlermeister 3 years ago 11
If this song by Denny touched you, please do a google search for his song "Cuddle Up." It's an amazing piece from back in 1972. It was supposed to be for a solo LP, but the Beach Boys needed it to fill an album commitment to Warner Bros. so he let them have it. He should have put this out as a solo or even a single. It's a song he wrote for his wife Barbara as his way of telling her that no matter what he does on the road, she is all that matters to him in life. He was so in love with her.
BigChiefLtd 2 years ago 2
I just finished listening to the double legacy version of POB... this is relevent music, not out of touch or dated by more than 30 years. So un Beach Boys... some great instrumentals, particularly the solo piano variations on disc 2.
jkeithwalters 3 years ago 2
I'd never heard this, or anything from his album before, and I'm touched by it's beauty. I drove a cab in LA in'83 and gave him a ride 2 weeks before he died. He was in bad shape and mentioned he had put out an album, and he had recently been kicked out of the band. I sensed the desire in his voice to be recognized for being an artist instead of just a Beach Boy who never contributed much. I think he died a frustrated man.
om4444 3 years ago 4
that makes me sad... his songs touch my deepest chord.
futuristfood 3 years ago 7
If I may suggest, I think Dennis was manic-depressive and that contributed heavily to his substance abuse. And yes, he was very frustrated because he never was taken seriously as an artist, with the exception of the other members of the band (even Mike Love praised some of his work). But in a way, he created his own fences. I think he knew that too. He was a good friend to me and, for all his problems, we all loved him and hoped he'd turn things around. His was a truly tragic story. Peace to all
