It doesn't help that hockey requires more skill and money to play than most sports either; a lot of kids grow up playing sports where all you need to start are a ball, a field and a few friends.

Honestly, the league would probably be better off moving most of the teams to Canada. Right now Edmonton, who placed bottom of the pack the last few years, still have a higher average attendance than half of the teams in the league. Most of the teams ranking above them are either based in Canada or have recently won/got close to winning the Stanley Cup, meaning that their "fans" are just following the latest fad.
Having said all that, there are also a bunch of hockey fans, myself included, who would rather watch Junior/College hockey anyways. Better social atmosphere with fans who actually care about their team and players who still have that enthusiasm that seems to fade a few years into their NHL careers, when it becomes a job.
Bettman should move all the teams that have below 650,000 attendance or places that don't sell above 84% of their seats on average (except for New Jersey)

I remember as watching hockey as a kid. I watch hockey now, and it makes me want to cry. The only way I will become an avid fan like I was as a kid is if the NHL and Gary Bettman comes to it's senses. I mean it really makes me want to cry. I don't understand why you people boo him. If he was really doing that bad, then why do you all continue to feed him money by watching NHL games and buying merchandise and game tickets? Pretty funny how that works, huh? I'm not saying I agree with much of the stuff he has done to the game, but it is pretty exciting hockey right now. His contract is up at the end of the 2010-2011 season, I hope the owners who have given him the job have enough common sense not to renew his contract. The GM of the Bruins has ripped into Bettman (most recent GM to do so), and several players have ripped into him and the fans despise him. There was the Balsillie BS with him as well and I'm pretty certain that with several of the Southern US teams failing, the owners in actual hockey markets are sick of paying for them and will stop. Be patient
