  • Are you married? :-)

  • In tune? Close enough for Jazz they always say. I've only seen 7 strings used for Metal applications, didn't expect to hear lot's of 7th chords and a moving bass line. Very good playing.

OK now play One Note Samba.

  • excellent . keep up .

  • 7 string guitar are for DOOM Metal!!! xD hell yeah :P

  • beautiful playing!

  • yea, i've already seen it said by others, but Animals as Leaders guitarist, Tosin Basin is freakin amazing at jazzy guitar stuff. and he makes it look completely effortless

  • Where is the metal!!?!?!?

HONESTLY! TURN THAT FUCKING DISTORTION AND GAIN ON??

You've made me smash my monitor, fuck you!

  • Very interesting love the Jobim sound!!! Keep it up.

  • i love u...>_<

  • @Hateeternal2009 Yeah, a lot of metal bands like using the lowest notes possible just to sound hardcore. I mean, songs can still sound good with Dropped A, but I think anywhere lower than that gets too inaudible. I am more of a metal fan but I definitely disapprove of trying to make the music "badass" rather than genuienly good, if you know what I mean.

  • epic. Your music is beautifull, forsure. Get a lead part over that!! The part your singing would be INCREDIBLE it would be awesome.

  • you're a pretty lady... and i like your playing... i am having one of these sent to me in the mail.. ill post a video soon.. give it a week

  • AEADGBE is standard but dropped for a 7 string right....u make this guitar sound beautiful thumbs up to u

  • how was it tunned again how is low A? i got the same wanna play like you!!

  • I'd like to marry you right now. I'm totally legal so its all good, just let me know when and where

  • Hey, I love it when you say "I lOVE IT".

As for the intonation: Go Thick. I built a 7-string acoustic and found I needed to go really big for that seventh string. It was too easy to inadvertently bend the string out of tune. I started with a .066 and that string was way too sloppy. I could not find a .068 so I went all the way up to a .070! WOW. Talk about making the guitar really ring, sustain, and snap!

So don’t be afraid to put on big thick strings.

  • sounds good keep jammin

  • Sounds good

  • great!

    cheers from Spain.

  • What song were you playing and humming to? Could you record it and put it online, because I absolutely adore it! If it's possible, just hum to it, it's so beautiful!

  • @zreau Blue Bossa by Kenny Dorham

  • @guitaress1 you should check out a guy named tosin abasi hes a metal guitarist from animals as leaders but his solo stuff is real jazzy bassy complex and over all absolutly beautiful

  • @guitaress1 you should check out a guy named tosin abasi hes a metal guitarist from animals as leaders but his solo stuff is real jazzy bassy complex and over all absolutly beautiful

  • God, Jazz is so beautiful! makes me wanna quit shredding and just learn all those chords :P

  • @Erithlon I don't think you have to do just one thing or the other! Especially if you have time on your side. Happy playing!

  • @Erithlon All music is connected. There isn't as much diference as you might think. ( I played Jazz on Sax for years.) I belive all art is connected.

  • i like this good job im getting one just for "death metal" as u said it but its nice to have a great review thanks :)

  • ELEVATOR MUSIC!!! YAY!! nice playing, you should explorer the more heavy metal riffs that they can achieve. Like the most commonly used scale by jeff loomis, no idea what its called. Its basic shape on a fretboard is like 7-8-11 pattern on one string.

  • rockin' guitar . . . pretty awesome cleavage too ;)

  • doesnt matter if you have a "metal" guitar or not, a guitar is a guitar, if you can play then you can play, rock on... jazz on? lounge on... *sighs* nice playing :P

  • I struggled with intonation on the 7th string for a while. I play a Carvin DC-747 with a .60 low string and an Eastman 810CE with a .80 low string. I think it might help to increase the thickness of the lowest string. I'm amazed at the sound you get out of that guitar. I had an ESP and I really couldn't use it except to figure out hand positions. I highly recommend the Eastmans for jazz but it's a big jump in price. I had to comb the internet for awhile before I saw a used one.

  • @mindguitar Thanks I did put a thicker string on, I forget now what gauge. Eastman, ey, yes, I'd rather have a hollow body for the kind of music I like to play. But this thing was only a hundred bucks or so-hard to beat.

  • very nice

  • wow. this i great, I wanted to know if this was any good clean

  • TIts.

  • That sounded great! 7 strings definitely take some getting used to but I hope you get a lot of inspiration from the new tones.

    guy below me. grow up.

and for all the arguing "7 strings are for metal waa, waa, waa"....

guitars were invented for making music. period. I hate all this stupid genre back and forth bullshit. real musicians explore EVERYTHING musical not just a few styles or genres. branch out and educate yourselves or just shut up.

  • agreed, there is this incredible jazz guitarist who uses seven strings, can't remeber his name tho... lol

  • probably thinking of charlie hunter... check out jason crawford as well... jason crawford is amazing

  • nice bossanova and nice tits

  • nice bossanova!

  • quite nice hearing a 7string being played other than Heavy tunes. well done. were the stock humbuckers installed when this clip was filmed?

  • yes, I did change the strings and the set up, but that's all

  • It's pretty good for the money (extremely cheap). Mine had a broken nut when it came in the mail, but I fixed it.

  • This is extremely humorous. It's kinda nice how you use an Extreme Metal instrument to play some of that Jazz-type stuff. Obviously, the lower strings are for accessing lower notes, which many Death Metal bands take advantage of, using much gain and palm-muting in their songs:)

  • @guitaress1 what was the actual quality of the guitar? i'm asking because i want to buy a 7 string guitar, but i don't want to spend big bucks on it. Also, the reason that your guitar is so well suited to you is because the "cheap" guitars from Dean have a great tone when it comes to blues or jazz. I have a 6 string Dean EVO (one of the cheapest guitars from Dean), and i have found this true. I just thought i'd let you know incase you wanted another 6 string. Thanks! =)

  • @stkuehne Well when it came, from Sweetwater I believe, the nut and part of the headstock was actually broken off and I had to glue it back on. That could probably happen to anything during shipping, but it indicated a kind of dispensability. You can hear the tone, it's not terrible. My biggest beef is with intonation issues but I am very sensitive. Plus these are denser harmonies than the average rocker's, most likely.

  • @stkuehne i bought one directly ordered by guitar center from the Dean factory since they didnt have anymore and it arrived at my house about 2 weeks later in great shape. nothing broken but for me the pick ups werent heavy enough but for the price its great..

  • actual it aint for death metal it just for a lower string that the E or what ever you tune the 6th string to

  • @wrthchild

Actually seven string guitar was invented to play jazz, do a research... METAL IS MY FAVORITE GENRE and I was like amazed when I founded 7 string guitar history... Besides, those "fucking wierd chord shit" you called are used by great metal bands... Listen to Textures, Meshuggah,COPROFAGO, TESSERACT, EVEN FEAR FACTORY to name a few...

I would like too see u try those "fuckin wierd chord shit" in a 7 string...

  • @Spongierocks Go to Wikipedia and search seven strings lol it's pretty funny because they are 230 years old and been used differently all over the world... haha and you're exactly right about those bands using jazz cords. In all reality, metal is just Blues, Jazz, and Arab styled scales played up tempo with a kink of originality... I like it all though!

  • @DropC09 Yes! actually a few days ago I was discusin this subject with a friend that thinks that knows everything, and he just shut his mouth and got into trauma when I showed him the information, actually the 7 string guitar's original name its "RUSSIAN GUITAR", Provided by wikipedia aswell =) and then someone made that russian guitar an electric, so 7 string was used for jazz and then its used for metal... its pretty cool tho...

  • @Spongierocks Animals as leaders.

    Nuff said :D

    Check em out :D

  • @AltAirPilot517, Sooooorrrrreeeeyyy!

  • But that's what makes an electric guitar good. It's versatility.

    Gotta put versatility to use.

I like a metal player. But a metal player who knows his jazz.... that's even better!

  • Hey love the guitar does it play well, i was looking to buy one well i mean i was going to ask my dad for one for christmas. Just wondering

  • First of all... You're absolutely fantastic... Secondly, I just got into 7 strings myself (not trying to hold a candle)... you may want to check out the company Agile... I have a two part review of a 7 string of theirs on my gear review page called... Guitar Gear 1... Take a peek if you're interested... Thanks for sharing! Loved it! Ty....

  • Play some KoRn!

  • Hey, I will post a Korn cover video just for you. But you should also subscribe to my videos =). Should I play Clown? Thats a good one.

  • @MrRG7321 do it

  • hey what chords did you play?

  • wow...u r an amazing aspiring jazz guitarist, i love listenin to ur chords, soo sweet sounding, more people need to realize why the seven string was invented! sweet sexy jazz

  • ibanez , in the rg body shape........LOL not invented for this!!! nice music still, but know your facts...........

  • um look it up the first 7 string guitars made were russians, and they were acoustics, and the first notable guitarist to use one was a jazz guitarist george van eps, also an acoustic, because jazz guitarist wanted to be able to play their bass chords along with their regular range of chords, so yea, the seven string was invented for this, seeing as 7 strings were, if made, acoustic for 2 centuries before the first solidbody was made, then steve vai stole the credit with that damn universe.......

  • i didnt see an acoustic in this vid? DID YOU???? LOL

  • ur missing the point, i said the 7 string guitar, was invented for jazz, until people decided 2 centuries later to use it for hard rock and metal, i didnt say this particular model was invented for jazz, and yes the 7 string was invented for jazz, and this is a dean, not an ibanez

  • no fucking shit, i know what i searched dickteeth!

and no...YOUR MISSING THE POINT! YOUR NOT GOING TO WIN BECAUSE IM NOT GOING TO GIVE UP cuz you have an emo name. yup.BITCH.

  • yea thats the way to do it attack the name, ya the reason i went with this name is because i wanted to work and record with metal blade records because of their artist roster, but no, obviously anthing to do with a razor is emo right? of course it is, and none of your comments have made sense, talking about ibanez when its a dean, what point are u trying to make? y u gotta be such a fucking dick? stop getting so offeneded over the internet, geez, when did youtube become a fight club?

  • i know this is a dean, i searched for DEAN i play a DEAN (30th ann. ml, it's for sale with emg 81/85?)

i didnt once mention DEAN..YOU DID

and metal blade.....so you went with razor blade dreamer? sorry thats just screaming emo not metal or metal blade records you WANTED to work with them? what happend to that?

  • i still wanna work with tim lambesis because he does amazing work and adam d, but i really wanna work with tooth and nail/solid state, solid has abr and they have some heavy stuff, unfortunately, fiance is a pop/rock singer and the contracts she has on the table are universal, bmg, columbia, stuff like that, so its whatever, i just sit back chill on my esp ltd ec-1000 and go to my cousins recording studio if i need to lay down a tasty riff

  • sorry miss, what cost one bottle beer in Your local town? You are a very good musician.

  • Ibanez 7321.

  • Is the Ibanez 7321 a good 7-string for the price?

  • Yes I have a Ibanez RG7321, they cost around 350 - 400$ USD. They are pretty nice guitars. Check out mine.

  • dude, ive been trying to get one of those for almost 5 months!!! i still cant find one on ebay for under 120

  • @mariokart77 Yea this is a good guitar, check mine out - new videos posted weekly.

  • you cheapskate

  • I love your interpretation of lullaby of birdland. I am hoping to buy the same guitar and swapping the pickups for dimarzios. You sound great and it was a wonderful demonstration of the guitars capabilities. Keep it up and don't be sorry for your mistakes, even the best of us.

  • i tune to Drop A with my 7 string.

    i play death metal.

    advantages?

    hahahahaha

it just gives the sound better chugging noise.

which is what we often enough are looking for

  • Whats Better Ibanez 7321 or Dean Vendetta 7.

  • i want to get my first guitar, but i only want a seven string.

    i love low shit.

my bass is in c# standard with a super low g i think?

but would this guitar be good and cheap?

    or terrible and cheap?

  • i've heard good and bad things about it. I have one, but i'm no expert in terms of quality

  • Actually, I was wondering if I should buy a 7-stiring guitar for the same object as yours. I decided I should. Please look at my videos too. You'll see why I wanted to buy 7-string gutiar.

  • i hope you mean the guitar is novice

because YOU are demonstrating some true talent

far from a novice indeed, really nice clean tone!

  • Great video!!!

  • cutey :D

  • The advantage of tuning to b would have the same advantages of tuning to drop d on a standard, you have more of a chug and you can play the low power chords faster.

  • No. The interval between the B and E is still a fourth and not a fifth like a dropped tuning would be. If you drop it to A like I believe she was saying she did, then you've got the same thing going on like drop D on a 6-string.

  • ...thats what i was saying....

  • i dont see why people have such a hard time with playing chords on a seven string guitar. u can still play all the same chords as a six string guitar. and they will sound the same. just dont touch the 7th string.

  • really like what your doin with the 7th string, ive had a 7 string for a year now and been messin around, looking for something other than super high distortion. i do like using it for joe satriani tho, he has a lot of music for the seven string.

  • i didnt know the dean vendetta's had 7 strings

  • btw, the B standard, I think, is the "proper tunning" or what makes the most sense musically for a 7 string. So it'd be like BEADGBe, but really, you an tune it to anything you want as long as it doesn't sound too "muddy". Hope that answers your question.

  • True, B is standard but tuning it to Low A is a jazz thing.

  • Use a heavier gauge for that seventh string so you have more tension on that low A and therefore a better intonation. I think you already knew this but maybe not so there it is.

  • Excellent playing =D Kind of reminded me of all The Sims games =D

  • Check out George Van Eps...

  • you tune it to a low B so power chord shapes stay the same

  • I love this tune, and will endeavour to learn it on my 6 string (albeit a little bit different due to the lack of the lower string).

You are an inspiration, and I look forward to viewing your other clips. Maybe others on the 7 string?

On a side note, it's refreshing to see so many friendly comments and no immature verbal bashing of the video uploader. :)

  • They have this industrial or progressive metal genre that sorta combines death metal with jazz and stuff.

  • I love your music, it's sooooooooooo nice!

  • id play metal on it

  • You may have been told this, but you can have all 6 strings and add an extra bass string, or you can add a tenor string. Just depends on what you want.

7 string guitars are not just for death metal. OBVIOUSLY, KoRn uses 7 strings, Steve Vai used 7 strings, and the guitarists for Meshuggah used to use 7 strings before switching to 8 strings, and none of them are death metal.

  • Maybe Korn and Meshuggah aren't "Death Metal" but c'mon they're fucking metal. Well Korn is for fags but Meshuggah is metal. Anywho you're retarded.

  • I know they're metal. I guess you must've interpreted that I said they are not metal since I worded it weird..

I just said they are not death metal, but they are indeed metal.

  • Yeah, I guess but all those stupid monikers piss me off. Death, Thrash, Black, Nu, Speed, Math, etc. Fuck that, metal is metal.

  • i think your the retarded one in this situation.

  • Well, up your nose with a rubber hose, sir.

  • i think when she said death metal she just meant heavy music, not necessarily death metal

  • i like your style, nice and jazzy - for a beginner your very confident with your chords etc

7s should be used for more than just death metal, as you said you can use the bass notes for some nice alternating bass lines etc.

  • I love 7-strings!! That's all I play :) Enjoy and good luck with yours...

  • Reminded me of elevator music. lulz. I like how you used Jazz on a 7 String. Ima get one now.

  • cool, you play well on this beautiful guitar!

  • No shame in Spinal Tap references. Nigel Tuftner is a genious.

Just stay away from D minor. I'm not ready to weep.

    Dig your groove!

  • Everytime! Amazing! Love your videos.

You don't look like the Death Metal type.

  • nice =)

  • Death metal? I don't think so....

  • You probaly have already got advice on this. But for the wrist problem/chord stretching stuff, maybe try playing with the guitar a little higher. This way your thumb gets behind the neck more, and you end up with a wider range of frets coverd. I found this to help me, some of those stretchy chords sound really nice. Anyhow, you problay read this elsewhere already! Solid playing by the way, real nice!

  • I've never heard a 7 string used in this way. It's really nice. Reminds me a lot of the music on The Sims game. :D

  • I want one

    But for Death metal haha

  • this videos tripy

  • Nice tune you've got going there

  • ........ :D

  • Very cool! This is a prime example that a guitar is a guitar, not a specific instrument for "deathmetal" or "metalcore". The biggest peice of advice would be to do string matching. Most jazz players use a set of 11s, and most 7 string 11s sets have a 58-60, which has roughly the same tension as an 8. I use 10-52s with a 70 on the bottom (ernie ball), and it has roughly the same tension throughout. That may be the intonation issue you are talking about.

  • Yes, it is an advantage to have those extra notes in the bass, whatever kind of music you're playing.

Thanks for your astute advice. I'll look into the gauges as you suggest.

  • why haven't you done any other videos with this guitar?

  • good question. I got busy with other things, mainly basic woodshedding on scales and arpeggios, plus I am still having intonation issues with it, unfortunately, though I've had it adjusted.

  • how is that unfortunate?

  • A lot of metal guys tune the 7th string either B or A. Each has it's advantages. The B is standard tuning. So you can pull off the 5th chords. While A is bassical just a really drop tuning or the 7 string equivalent of like Drop D or Drop C. And a lot of neoclassical guys use it for expanding on arpeggios.

  • I like the way the video looks solarized! Very good demo and chord playing!

  • your really good. that guitar is known for intonation problems. take it to the store you got it from they should be able to fix it. do you have a myspace?

  • I'm still trying to figure out 6 strings. I have seen Alden, Bucky and Jimmy Bruno do some amazing things with that low A string.

You've got guts. I admire that.

  • oh, that's nice. never heard of it before ^^

..so you can do the Wechselbass (changing 5ths bass?) in your songs :) for example when playing the G chord you can play the deeper D in combination. nice!

  • Yes, that's exactly right. Wechselbass? Good usage of German musical term--I have never heard that one. I tried to look it up. Does it just mean alternating root and 5th?

  • yes, exactly. wechsel means change/changing.

have a good day princess :)

  • the reason metal musicians, like myself, tune to drop b or c, is because we use lots of palm muting, and it just gives it that extra growl, its kind of undescribable.

  • good point. i always wonder why i tuned so low before i got this guitar. Stay brootal.

    God bless

  • ouhhh! one girl with a 7 strings! amazing! ^^

    enjoy it ;)

  • Check out some George Van Eps, who did a lot of seven string stuff for jazz.

    Nice playing, btw.

  • You got a nice guitar :D

  • very cool, i want an acoustic version!

  • You sound very good! I was on the same journey, but the neck size, shape, discouraged me. I bought a Schecter, also a metal axe. But my musical interests are very similar to yours.

Intonation: The stock strings are too light.

I'm using .070 for 7th (B). When intonated, you may find the 7th string CLOSER to the nut than the 6th string. It has to do with how they are wrapped.

Also on my guit. the nut to 1st fret dist. was wrong!

You have encouraged me to give it another try.

    Thanks, Michael

  • Congratulations on your new acquisition ! You're already pretty good at it !!! Thanks to this video I've found a whole lot of 7 string jazz guitar techniques from jazzguitarmaker !

  • It's a whole new chatty you.I like it.Lovely voice and playing as always. We await developments with interest.Sounds great so far.

  • I don't know anything about 7 strings but I can see you're excited lol. Excellent video.

  • Nice. Too much for my little brain. I can barely figure our 6. I do love listening to VanEpps. I can't stand playing the things, but I will be happy to hear what you do with it.

  • Hi Billy,

Thanks. Yes I love Tamborr's delicious muted bass lines and yours too! This guitar definitely has a whole different timbre; the strings it came with are sorta "boing-y": very bright. It poses many new intriguing puzzles... Best, M

  • the very first time in my life I hear a death metal guitar sound so sweet! cool!

  • LOL I've started a whole new genre-Metal Bossa!

Well, thanks to Musician's Friend, the price was right for getting in at the low end, so to speak.

  • sounds great, good deal!! you can call it «How to tame a Vendetta» ahahah :))

  • Thanks Frank!

For years I thought "I don't even know how to play the 6 string" but was still curious about 7 string. Now I still don't know how to play either one, but I'm satisfying my curiosity, and I think it's teaching me some new principles of bass figures, harmony, etc. A good experiment so far.

  • Hey, I was looking at a Giannini 7 string nylon... I think it would be loads of fun, but I also anticipate lots of 'oops' bass notes along the line too! This demo is very timely for me!

    P

  • Giannini 7 string nylon sounds awesome! Have you heard that Yamadu guy or Rabello? I wasn't even aware of any of that.

Even for my simple comping though, 7 adds a new range.

The oops continue: my brain knows there's another string but my hand doesn't know it yet.

  • Hi Mel,

Cool and fun, hope one day these Death Metal Guitars players will use this 7 string guitar like you LOL.

Nice playing, chords progr, and voice of course.

    Cheers,

    Chris

  • Hi Chris,

I know you understand the excitement of new gear. I'm learning from it, and love my new bass notes.

    Best wishes,

    M

  • 7-strings are putting bass players out of work! LOL. I once had the honor of visiting John Monteleone's shop and playing a 7-string arch top he had just finished. He strung it up and handed it to me. I was awe-struck. Check Jimmy Foster 7-string youtube clips. He's a fine luthier and musician.

  • Hi Fretkillr,

Yes I saw some of Jimmy Foster's work. Beautiful! A luthier 7 string would be great! I'll start saving.

  • Nice possibilities,it sounds great and I love the sound of the deep bass , also walking bass in fourth's would definitely sound great on this instrument, I see you're very enthusiastic about it,keep working on it and make it your own, greets Victor.

  • Beautiful. I love your videos. From the title I thought you'd gotten a brazilian classical 7-string. Maybe you can get one next. Maybe you can play like Yamandu Costa or Rabello. You have a beautiful voice and play well. Keep making videos and let us know your of your live performances.

  • A Brazilian classical 7-string sounds marvelous, we'll see how it goes with this humble instrument.

Thanks for telling me about those two guys though! They're amazing.

  • I`m sure you will enjoy your 7-string guitar with the knowledge you already have on chord progression.

The extra bass string can allow great fingerstyle jazz.

  • I hope so. I never dared try before because I thought I had my hands full with 6 strings! However, it's already making me think differently about relationships of notes on the fretboard, so I will learn more about the 6 string as well.

  • the metal dudes are often playing just the lowest 3 or 4 strings on a 6-string, either riffing or playing power chords. the low B means all the same fingerings, but with more chunkiness.

  • What your doing right now is what most jazzers do on a 7 string. Play your sixth string chords normal but beef up your 5th string chords with the 7th string bass notes. George Van Eps uses all the posibilities. Sounds great, you'll have fun with it.
