  • Ok. I just watched the Jeremiah and Candide show again and I have to take it back....I love this show but GC definitely was the better corps on that night.

  • "The Jeremiah'" kind of sucked buckeyeba. I will watch it again in a minute to see if I get any more bored by it than I do every time I hear it by TGC. Candide was brilliant, however. That is probably what was pushed the judges over the edge to give it to the Cadets. The Red Pony at the end of SCV's show was kind of out of place. I still loved it but they may as well have broken out "the Bottle Dance".

  • One of my favorite SCV shows of all time...

  • Man...Grovers Corners is just the tastiest.

  • @tommytimp AGREED!!! tell me there's video of them (SCV) or someone else playing that on here somewhere. SCV Preferred!

  • one of my favorite shows ever.

  • back when snare drums sounded like snare drums

  • The days of Ralph

  • I've been a long time Garfied Cadets fan since 1983, but this SCV show from 85 is still one of my all time faves! Thanks for posting. Glad to find these clips on YouTube!!

  • In my previous comment - I just wondered if they had a "letdown" in their performance that night.

    Does anyone have any insight?

  • If I recall correctly........they placed 2nd at camp randall stadium in wisconsin to the garfield cadets from NJ.........it was an awesome show

  • Was there a major problem in their show that year at finals? Hardimon seemed a little let down after the show when they interviewed him live on the field (on the broadcast).

  • @srtyler Major phasing and ensemble issues. Plus, "Festive Overture" drags on and on. Not a great hornbook as was judged. They were so clean all season that they thought the championship was theirs. Well, along came a MUCH more demanding show (which counted on the sheets then) and schooled SCV.

  • @buckeyeba

Hmmm...thats not how I remembered it. And I was there on the field. We did not have major phasing issues, although it was not our best show at DCI. And we never, for a second, thought the championship was ours. How would you know that? were you there on tour with us? I don't think so. We were never "schooled". When we first saw Garfield Cadets a month earlier, they were 5 points behind us. They improved the most over 4 weeks, and the judges gave it to them. Those are the facts.

  • @scv7785 You beat Garfield 5 times... they were NEVER 5 points behind you. In calendar order: 2.3;; 2.2 (Garfield had a 1 point penalty); 0.7; 2.0; 1.5. Two ties along the way; Garfield beat you by 1.3 at US Open prelims; 0.2 World Semis; 1.2 When It Counted. Ironically, take away the 1-pt penalty at DCI East: SCV wins by 1.2 and wins every caption except Visual. Garfield wins DCI by 1.2 and beats SCV in every caption except Visual. THOSE are the facts. I disclaimed yours; I dare you to try.

  • @buckeyeba

Ok...2.3 points. One fact wrong after 26 years. I don't have the freaking score sheets in front of me, but everything else I said was true. I WAS THERE. Were you? re-read my comments and tell me where else I'm wrong. I responded to your post because of the insulting word "schooled". If you were there on the field in 1985, I will respect your opinion. But your assumption that we (SCV) thought we were going to win is absolutely wrong. I stand by my FIRST HAND KNOWLEDGE. Dare? Really?

  • @scv7785 Yeah, you got SCHOOLED by a design team that created what could TO THIS DAY be considered the most demanding, exposed show ever done. Comparatively, SCV's high school halftime show was over-simplified. And your Timing and Ensemble were awful. You peaked at DCI East and eventually lost to JEREMIAH! (Uh, I was standing right next to you all in retreat. So, I was there.) And FWIW, SCV has been MUCH better since that night; Garfield, alas, has not. You can have that tidbit.

  • @buckeyeba

You're right. We did take second place. Like or hate the show, thats your opinion. By the way, who is Jeremiah? and what drum corps did you march in?

  • @scv7785 The Jeremiah Symphony. Which corps was next to you in the end zone? (Other side of BD)

  • "Individual Excellence in a Group Effort" Thanks, Chaz.

  • I remember being a sophomore in high school in the USA and watching this video as part of my band class. I was ALWAYS attracted to the level of dedication it takes and took to put on a stellar show of this magnitude. I got as far as teaching it and believe it or not, I used to tape these DCI performances and then pretend I was marching with them !!! LOL loyalty. To this day DCI has shaped for me how to work with others and to strive for nothing but excellence. Thank you for inspiring.

  • great show... i remember being blown away with the rips in the hornline.... 85 was just one of those years where drum corps, all corps, were stellar... great year.... unbelievable how good this recording sounds.... listen how low those premier tenors are tuned. ralphie fielded a great line, but then when did he not?

  • whoa....instant DCI classic....

  • Enough cannot be said of this show. The era. The passion. The excellence. The class. The moments that are still talked about today. Gail Royer.

  • I love this show!!! Thanks for posting! SCV all the way!

  • I marched BD from 80 to 86, but I have to say I LOVED this show! As Angelica once said, Santa Clara is the "Rolls Royce" of drum corps, and I couldn't agree more! The tunnel gag atill blows me away!!!!

  • Damn nice mello solo.

  • For sure. He did an excellent job.

  • longfade---

what year's videos do you have?

    would love to see them

  • This is so cool. I was on that tour (different corps) and always ran off to see other corps rehearse whenever I could. I've got some great tapes of Suncoast, Blue Devils, and Garfield rehearsing their shows. Michael Klesch yelling at the drumline, etc. I kind of like rehearsals/ run-thru's more than the performance most of the time.

  • ( I have that flag)

  • God I miss the 80's. Drum corps just isn't the same now. I know Festive is a bitch to play sitting down in Concert Band let alone march like that!!!

Then as Steve Rondinaro says..........SCV has just the prettiest back-field moments..............how gorgeous is the Copland!!!

Think of all of their shows in the 80's for SCV love them all.

  • Absolutely, man. I'm glad kids are still doing corps (marching band, actually) and having fun but most anyone who was around in the 70s or 80s (80s for me) probably feels the same way. This recent stuff just comes off as saccharine and empty to me. Like Disney or Broadway - completely overblown and homogenized.

  • I love SCV 85

  • Grover's Corners...man, that is boss.

  • Do you know if it is possible to find a video of the 1987 Santa Clara Vanguard performance?

    I'm dying to see it...

  • Comment removed

  • WOW! I remember marching this like it was only last year! I have an old cassette recording of this run-thru. It was my last before I aged-out

  • Miss Vanguard's big G sound. Thanks for posting.

  • whoa, oh my god.. tri toms??? bottom right hand corner..

  • We had a separate corps in the tunnel...well, that's what one lady said to me in Texas. Hey Bob in San Diego! Hope to see you at DCI!

    SCV 85 Sop Chick

  • Kevin lies. It was spray paint, I'm telling you! You know, like a drive through carwash. ;oD

  • how do they change pants, is it just pulled off?

  • Took a while to get it to work, as I recall. Velcro on the sides. Quick pull out and up. Keep moving forward and dump the shell in a big trash bin on wheels. Some crazy screw-ups early season until we got used to it. The big applause came with the double-time low walk acceleration half-way through the bit.

  • They had Velcro back then? Hah

  • pure energy and heart this was a awesome show ty 1985scv always in my heart

  • Kevin, Keep those videos coming! SanDiegoBob

  • Still the best uniform change ever! I always got a kick watching from the endzone. Grover's Corner is still one of the prettiest moments I've heard. Fitting to see Gail in some of the shots. Thanks for posting, KTB.

  • It still pisses me off that they were the runner up that year. Thanks for bringing back the memories

  • Does anyone have anything from the year 1978/79 finals.... the year I marched with (SCV) lost both copy in a house fire...

  • I might have something on vhs from those years. I'll have to do some digging. But, I'll let you know when I find them.

  • Thanks for bringing back those memories...I have a video of finals somewhere in a box that was recorded by my parents. If you happen to have a finals video, I would love to see it. Sop chick 85...

  • Thanks for this!

  • 86 is pretty thin, video-wise, but I'm checking. Slow process to dig through old videos and convert.

  • Wow! Thanks for posting this ktbscv! Do you have anything from 1986 (the year I marched SCV)?
