@handshock.... yeah blah blah he wrote...but for you to say he is highly over rated...your statement is severely exagerated...you have no soul....aw forget it you can,t reason with stupidity!!!
Otis Redding highly overrated. Okay, he wrote Respect, and co-wrote Dock of Bay with the lead guitarist, Steve Cropper. I'm mystified by his appeal as a 'soul' singer..Eric stole the show here and showed him what a soul singer actually sounds like.
@HandShock he also wrote - These Arms of Mine, Security, That's What My Heart Needs, Chained and Bound, Mr. Pitiful (Co wrote), Ole Man Trouble, I've Been Loving You Too Long (Co wrote) and many many more. Otis is the king
having seen otis and eric live lots of times in 60's i can tell you the music scene was just great pre walkman and diskman and ipod we carried our transistor radios everywhere listening to music. great times. today there is little originality.apart from smashing pumpkins...
i'm only 23, an american 90s kid/millenium teen at heart, but i'd kill to pilfer the whole Mod scene of 60s england and to be in that audience to hear Otis!! KTF
What a sound man!!!!! have you heard the rythm section!!!! the drummer, the saxophones, the horn.... pure sound!!!!! and the duet with Burdon!!!! it's the real thing!!!! stuff to ear again and again!!!!!
I'd understand better the comments about how great EB's performance was if I could imagine that you had never heard the original version of "Hold On ,I'm Coming" by Sam & Dave and maybe you haven't , but I am guessing that you did hear Otis Redding singing B4 EB. So now I am back to being mystified by these comments about EBs greatness as a soul singer.I'm sorry , but not judging by this performance. Maybe compared to Mick Jagger in that same era or some of the soul-less wonders of today .
Otis = LEGEND! Bar-Kays = LEGENDS! this was one week after his 25th birthday.....dude had more soul in his little pinky than any of us could dream to have. and sadly in 15 months from this performance the plane carrying Redding and the Bar-Kays would crash into Lake Monona in Madison, WI......damn. so sad. that is the day the music died......luckily we smile in looking at this on YouTube and feel the power of Otis and his soul music !!!
THIS is exactly what Burdon should have focussed on after ditching the original Animals: tight, hard-hitting soul music obviously well suited for him... unfortunately the dated psychedelic ramblings he churned out next could not have been further removed from this gut-busting performance.
If only Burdon could have got himself signed to Stax or Atlantic.... what could have been.
George Harrison confessed that he played the bass line from Otis's version of "Respect" on guitar as his contribution to John and Paul's "Drive My Car".
Look out for a cd called The Very Best of Otis Redding (bouble album)om Atco. It's got all his biggest hits (40 tracks). You can probably find it on Amazon.
Eric Burdon is one of the truly great voices, in the top 20in Rock & Roll...He could could sing blues-r&b, with power convictin and feeling...a GIANT talent.
EXTRAORDINARY!

Eric Burdon is incredible but I'm sure he would be the first to tell you that there was nothing like Otis Redding.

To sing with Otis, Eric had to be on his A-game, and he handles himself like a true champ.
