The movie skips over the fact that Carrie Buck was fully literate until her death in 1983. She was "put away" to hide the inconvenience of her having been raped by the nephew of her adopted mother.

Indeed it was a sad chapter - the enthroning of eugenics in many US states was a tragedy and I hope it will not be repeated.
