I tell you what, Ali rebounded from this loss beautifully. Not only did he keep winning fights by beating the best fighters and eventually regain the title, he also defeated Frazier twice.

In hindsight, Frazier obviously needed this one to make it a true rivalry, and he pulled it off. Best win of his career, to say the least. And a monumental one, historically.
I love Ali, but Frazier won this one. Frazier must have landed close to a hundred left hooks. By many considered one of the best left hooks in the heavyweights division ever. It´s a miracle Ali survived this one. To even think that he came back to face the same fighter three more times, is crazy. Only a few have been so brave or mad.

Frazier makes me sick, all he does when hurt, his throw that left hook wildly, he did it against Foreman to, watch 3:04 onwards and you will see. Ali could have finished him off, but he obviously wasn't thinking straight in the fight.
@messier991102 I don't know what my problem is, I guess my problem is, frustration, Ali was more than capable of defeating Joe with ease, as this fight shows, Frazier only really had one solid weapon, the left hook. I know he pressured Ali to, but pressure alone would not have won Frazier this fight, it was Ali's lack of respect for that left hook that won Joe this fight. Had Ali prepared more and was aware of that swinging left hook, I think it would have been Ali's night.

Ali is the greatest heavyweight, and arguably the best fighter who ever boxed. But let's be honest, the guys he fought in the 60's (save Liston) would not have been champions in any era. He also fought slow, no talent white guy and black fighters who couldn't have beaten any champion from the late 60's (Joe), 70's MA/GF/LH (Ali/Holmes) the 80's/90's (Holmes/Tyson) through the now. Evaluate the competition Ali fought during his so call 'best' years in the mid-60's and see where they stand.

recently saw a documentary on joe frazier -- incredible that he was losing sight in his left eye at the very beginning of his pro career. i don't think there has been a more courageous champion in the history of the sport.
@yusufu9 Don't forget he had kidney problems and was very dehydrated as well vs Ali1. Pound for pound, no one tougher than Smokin Joe. Foreman was taking him off the canvas with his punches and Joe never stayed down, the guy was all heart and toughness, him and Duran are my alltime favorites.

@yusufu9 After Ali1, when he went to the hospital, they found the problem with his kidney's. It's the reason he stayed in the hospital so long after the fight. The kidney problem was the reason why Joe was completely dehydrated after the fight.
When Ali and Joe sat side by side with Cosell to review this fight and Ali scolded Joe for bringing up the hospital visit, Ali knew it was because of Joe's kidney's that Joe was in and out of the hospital, that's why Joe got so pissed. Then Diabetes.

@walmartian555 I don't think it was a trap, as in trying to get Ali to take the offense by faking it, doesn't seem like Frazier's style. Look what happened the first time he found himself fighting on the back foot because of letting the other guy take the offensive: Foreman destroyed him. Obviously Ali doesn't have the same punching power as Foreman, but no doubt he throws far more accurately plus its not like his punches were weak.

He didn't believe in playing Possum, look at Foreman vs Joe, Frazier was getting pasted but never took a step back, he was pushed and punched back, but he never intended to step back, much to his detriment. Joe was 10 lbs heavier for Foreman than Ali1, he wasn't in shape and much of his hunger was missing because of it being filled by his win over Ali. Joe regained that hunger but his injuries took away what he once was.
I reckon if Ali hadn't spent so much time fucking around in this fight, he could have won. In the first round alone he hits Frazier with a perfect left hook which really brings Joe to a halt, an instance where his arms hang limpy and he stops pumping away with his legs as per usual, even just for a few seconds. He should've capitalized on that and fired away.

@messier991102 I don't know what my problem is, I guess my problem is, frustration, Ali was more than capable of defeating Joe with ease, as this fight shows, Frazier only really had one solid weapon, the left hook. I know he pressured Ali to, but pressure alone would not have won Frazier this fight, it was Ali's lack of respect for that left hook that won Joe this fight. Had Ali prepared more and was aware of that swinging left hook, I think it would have been Ali's night.

Ali is the greatest heavyweight, and arguably the best fighter who ever boxed. But let's be honest, the guys he fought in the 60's (save Liston) would not have been champions in any era. He also fought slow, no talent white guy and black fighters who couldn't have beaten any champion from the late 60's (Joe), 70's MA/GF/LH (Ali/Holmes) the 80's/90's (Holmes/Tyson) through the now. @yusufu9 After Ali1, when he went to the hospital, they found the problem with his kidney's. It's the reason he stayed in the hospital so long after the fight. The kidney problem was the reason why Joe was completely dehydrated after the fight.
When Ali and Joe sat side by side with Cosell to review this fight and Ali scolded Joe for bringing up the hospital visit, Ali knew it was because of Joe's kidney's that Joe was in and out of the hospital, that's why Joe got so pissed. Then Diabetes.

Look what happened the first time he found himself fighting on the back foot because of letting the other guy take the offensive: Foreman destroyed him. Obviously Ali doesn't have the same punching power as Foreman, but no doubt he throws far more accurately plus its not like his punches were weak.

He didn't believe in playing Possum, look at Foreman vs Joe, Frazier was getting pasted but never took a step back, he was pushed and punched back, but he never intended to step back, much to his detriment. Joe was 10 lbs heavier for Foreman than Ali1, he wasn't in shape and much of his hunger was missing because of it being filled by his win over Ali. Joe regained that hunger but his injuries took away what he once was.

I reckon if Ali hadn't spent so much time fucking around in this fight, he could have won. In the first round alone he hits Frazier with a perfect left hook which really brings Joe to a halt, an instance where his arms hang limpy and he stops pumping away with his legs as per usual, even just for a few seconds. He should've capitalized on that and fired away.

you cant ever judge when someone is hurt or their setting up a trap from just watching a fight
we have no idea what went on in ali or fraziers mind when that happened
