I think here, they are simply parodying by exaggeration the misinformed and narrow-minded attitudes of the church and its representatives on this subject.
@bobbobato I think the sketch is a bit more subtle than that. Rowan Atkinson's character is rather sadly describing his own repressed feelings. That's why he looks so crestfallen at the end. It seems to me extremely sympathetic to everyone, except perhaps to an institution that requires grown men to repress their own sexual identities (straight or gay) for reasons that have eluded most people these past 2,000 years.
