This thing saved my house last night. Was cooking something in a toaster oven when it caught on fire. Fire extinguishers do sit around for a while.. but you never know when they could save your property or even your life. That "when" was last night for me. Thank god for these ingenious devices.
if you wanna know how to put a fire out the right way we have a video made in Alaska that will teach you! Click on our name to see out videos and watch it. Its good
Actually most common fire extinguishers today are a dry chemical, not CO2 gas...it helps them put out more than just a paper fire by smothering the fire rather than displacing oxygen in the atmosphere. It's more efficient in an open-air environment where more oxygen just rushes back in to the still-hot fuel and reignites it.
@THEUPTOWNKID181 You're responding to a comment I made back when they didn't automatically add who I'm responding to. Go back over the comments until you see the point made the comment, not just the "top rated" comments spot, and you'll see the post I'm responding to.
u know the powder for coffee that gives the milky taste try ligthing it when its on the table, you wont succeed if you let it fly through the air it will light.
so you'll need something else then only oxygen heat and fuel, that are the other 2 things i said
Firie needs 3 things only. Fuel (ie. Gas), Oxygen, and a Heat source (ie. Flame)
The reason your powder sugar (ie. Splenda) doesn't light on fire on the table is due to the fact that you have a over riched ratio. More fuel then Oxygen thus it can't burn. When you throw it in the air, its allowed to spread out allowing the ratio to come down and allow it to catch fire. If you shoot it out of a potato gun then the ratio changes due to compression ratios and such.
Oxygen, heat and fuel. That's it. Aerating a powder exposes more of the fuel(the creamer powder) to more oxygen in the air via increased surface area. Add a little bit of heat and you have a flammable, even explosive combination.
It's still just fuel, oxygen and heat. You can burn sugar with a hotter flame, the ash merely reduces the amount of energy required to burn the sugar. A catalyst is NOT necessary to create an exothermic reaction. In the end it's still just the big three.
oh and anyone who says different.. ur dumb.. notice when he first trys putting it out.. you see him fail at it and just blow fire out of it...he used used way to much extinguishing agent and barley got the task done.. ive put out propane fire 15 times that size with less... go ask your local fire dept. most of them do fire extinguisher training classes
omg ur retarded.. first off ti depends on your type of fule, second.. that was oil based... your too close to start with..3 with oil based fire.. u fuckign aim at the liquid especially as clsoe as you are your just goign to blwo the fule aorudn make a bigger mess and push fire around... yes you aim at the base of the fire.. and start like atleast 4 feet away and work your way in sweepign back and forth ina pretty fast movement... go take entry lvl fire fighting.. didiot
depends..actually.. wate fire extinguishers are jsut filled with water to a certant lvl and then seal and pummped up with compressed air... u can resuse those over and over.. checmical extinguishers... you ahve to send back to manufacturer where there tested and refilled
when i wsa 13, my bro 19 we had a Fire extinguisher fight they looked just like the one being used here, powerder every where lol for hundreds of feet there was nothing but white powder. good times.
It's not the size of the fire that causes it to spread, it's the fuel of the fire and the extinguisher used. That's why it's important to use the proper extinguisher. Water will spread a liquid fire...gasoline, oil, grease, etc. That's why an all purpose extinguisher, or an ABC extinguisher is dry chemical (a powder). A= ordinary combustibles (paper, wood, etc) B= electrical, C= liquid, D= flammible metals. Water will not spread a type A fire but you wouldn't want to use it on the others.
What do you think is happening when you put water on a fire? The water turns to steam becuase it's absorbing the heat from the fire, thus the fire goes out. There is even a calculation to figure it out, a fire X wide by X long = Y amount of water to put it out.
A dry chemical extinguisher smothers (removes the oxygen) a fire. A water based extinguisher removes the heat.
It's basically a mix of different kinds of salts. Endotherm reactions including the salts then reduces the heat necessary to keep the reactions going.
actually, most extinguishers don't have a compressed gas cylinder inside. it's just the agent (here, ABC powder) under pressurized nitrogen. pressing the lever opens up the valve and the agent is discharged. BIG extinguishers are operated by cartridges, but they look much different than what we're used to seeing. the cartridge is on the outside and the hose comes out of the bottom.
We also have fire codes in the United States that require medium to large sized fire extinguishers. We also have laws and codes that require fire sprinklers which work so much better at fighting larger fires.
1) Most extinguishers nowadays (especially small powder units like the Kiddie) don't use gas cartridges - they're "stored pressure" models.
2) The demo shows a dry powder extinguisher being used on a cooking oil fire. Dry powder extinguishers aren't recommended for grease or cooking oil fires (class f) becuase they have no cooling properties and tend to blow the burning grease about without extinguishing it.
Bad editing. When he pulls the pin the guage is reading empty.
Anyway the Kiddie line is crap. Buy an Amerex or Ansul. Its kinda funny how the same people tell you to buy the largest ext. you can but then only do these small training burns. They also only show ABC on class b and dont let people see how ineffective dry chem is on a seated class A(like a couch or trash fire).
you aim at the fuel because you are trying to eliminate one part of the fire triangle. listen to the video, it needs fuel, air, and heat.
most extinguishers work by smothering the fire, the powder removes the air/oxygen and the fire goes out. even if the fuel spreads the power will coat it and prevent it from burning.
a water extinguisher will spread the fuel but only because most fuels float on water
Ya I use a APW for my Bar'b'que. But the grease on that is so little its just spread out over a large surface area on the grill so it does not spread or flare that much. And t seems to work better when it is at 100 psi. Go figure.
O, dont get me wrong I'm not suggesting using it for anyone else, its kinda dumb but its works okay for me. I use a little Drench it too(after the meat has been removed from that part of the grill) so its not just H20.
How well do those water mist ext. work on class B or k? I thought most used deionized water?
Lucky bastard! I am still trying to get my hands on a copper class D. But we will ever get any more class D exts.
I want to get a water mist for my burn pile, the water cans that I have just scatter the leaves. So far I just use a garden pesticide sprayer(mist wand) with dish soap or what ever class A I can sneak out of the station. LOL
The best extinguisher I used world be a fast flowed extinguisher. I had them explode on me before. Have have a 90% discount off on recharge asll extinguishers.
I heard that the water mist exts.(at least the Amerex ones) need a special air adaptor to re-pressurize. Do you know if this is true, becuase that would probably keep me from buying one. I doubt they would sell me the adaptor, I guess the whole point is to keep the recharging at the stores.

I dont sound smart? Based on what, not liking shitty products that are crap when I can get a ansul or amerx that will take a beating.

Most companies won't recharge Kidde extinguishers with plastic valves, even if they're "rechargeable", because the threads wear out and leak.
Amerex is great, Buckeye is great too. Ansuls is good, but I've seen their valves get stuck open when the extinguisher is used.

Acuallty is does say EMPTY thats a unit thats a NFPA that may not be recharged. If you do it will blow.

if you aim it at the fuel it will make the fire spread
mfd6811 4 years ago
if you are close it will but 6 feet back or little more will put the fire out faster then aiming at the flames Tim

you aim at the fuel because you are trying to eliminate one part of the fire triangle. listen to the video, it needs fuel, air, and heat.
most extinguishers work by smothering the fire, the powder removes the air/oxygen and the fire goes out. even if the fuel spreads the power will coat it and prevent it from burning.
a water extinguisher will spread the fuel but only because most fuels float on water

Ya I use a APW for my Bar'b'que. But the grease on that is so little its just spread out over a large surface area on the grill so it does not spread or flare that much. And t seems to work better when it is at 100 psi. Go figure.

Well when i read the commet above my last one I was thinking they were talking about a water/loaded stream. I was talki ng about a water mist unit.
InformationCenter 4 years ago
O, dont get me wrong I'm not suggesting using it for anyone else, its kinda dumb but its works okay for me. I use a little Drench it too(after the meat has been removed from that part of the grill) so its not just H20.
How well do those water mist ext. work on class B or k? I thought most used deionized water?

They work great. I'm a fire explorer so I sprayed all kinds od extinguishers even a class D and a class F.

GotIt123 3 years ago
Yeah they do need one. I belive if you use one they just give you one. Call on eof your fire extinguisher disturbors.
