  • Back in the 80's, when I was young and trying to understand the world for the first time, this video did more to help me understand and sympathize with gay people than anything else available to me.

I would give Jimmy Somerville a big hug if he were here.

  • @bloodmarine77 Well this isn't how it should be. IF a gay man does hit on a straight man (which rarely happens) then if anything the straight man should feel flattered that someone thinks he's worth the time to hit on.

It's really sad that you think this guy deserved what he got because he thought someone was cute. And are you unaware of the over-population problem? Would you condemn a straight couple that chooses not to reproduce as well? You're a hypocrite and homophobe.

  • @nasilu i am neither a hypocrite or a homophobe, i dont care what gay men do as long as its not in my face.im just saying that if it did happen most straight men would take offence and retaliate to feel more like a man....fact!!!

i take it your speaking from experience in being gay too, if so i wouldn't expect you to understand.

all that said tho.....i feel that if jimmy was not gay we would not be blessed with his fantastic music.

  • The moral is: If you try to pick up Adrian Brody at the diving pool, you're in for rough trade at the Snack Bar, confirming suspicions your father had about the fey way you eat boiled eggs. (This was before Greg Louganis, when synchronized diving was still a macho heterosexual activity.)

Don't worry, there will be other diving pools in other small towns. And your bandmates' parents also gave them money, a train ticket, and kicked them out, so you can all travel together!

  • not a long tme ago when you were gay you were sick or a devil..... i ran to save my life and fortunetly i got good friends to rescue me. For me this song shows how it was for the gay.

I was proud to be gay and i still, i was running and now i'm staying.

  • Good sounds, nice lyrics a fighter for the equality of all good love beneath this sun.

  • HETERO LOVE IS WRONG PEEPS!

  • 'As ,an eighties'Master-peace ;-:.),They "ruled"a decade,Respect ! Let's DANCE !

  • Wait, hold on, so although I'm a fan of this song, I never really watched the video fully until now. So the guy he had a crush on was the one to beat him up? Heart-breakingly clever.

  • @MrFoxInc well done genius

  • AXCELERATED !! bof ! NO VO

  • @daemonka i agree with you everytime i listen to it ,it just sounds better and better

  • Gotta love the 80s.....the music, the way of living,......the era....

  • im 23 and this song is 100% relevant to people my age even tho you old fags ight think we have it easy :D x x

  • @AsboDolche you have it easier. Needless to say, things now r far from perfect.

  • @AsboDolche How dare you call anyone "old fags"? And are you dumber than shit?! The Bronski Beat is an openly gay band that came out as that even in 84 when they made this song with a specific relation to the struggle of anyone in modern day America coming out of the closet struggling w/ inevitable prejudices as it is in the majority of the world and why in this fucking Music Video of any "Smalltown Boy", or girl, that's gay he shows how they often have to, and should, runaway to a better place.

  • @gagahusband did u even read my comment,? i understand the video thanks for the explanation.

  • @gagahusband Besides all the other flak you are getting, BB were British so were hardly talking about 'modern day America' (though, of course you're right - it's a worldwide issue). Glad you support the cause (err, I think...)!

  • Y E S ! and im young XXXX

  • sad bud still rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Song of the year in 1984, at least on my charts

  • ya mums bum wierdscience85

  • bum boy jimmy

  • i played this song at our civil partnership, i just love jimmy's voice

  • Trivial comment...but the mum in the video is Miss Flood from 80's/90's sitcom 'May to December'!

  • If a cute, shy gay guy came up to me like that, l'd go "Dawwwww x3" and hug him. Even if l was straight.

  • @HammerOfPink the guy in the vid gets beat up by that guy cause he is gay and ask him if hes gay and that beat him up?:))

  • Mała Scena Rozrywki Szczecin lata 80

    czy ktoś jeszcze pamięta?

  • The best decade for music. The 80s. Period.

  • he has a feminine voice, but its sounds nice!

  • @FLICKOFF1000 VOICE OF CONTRATENNOR

  • @MsCityofjoy I remember at the time there was disagreement if he was a contratenor (or 'true male soprano', some call it) or if he was using falsetto. I'm no expert, but I always felt it was the former as his tone is so rich. Either way, his is a beautiful voice & he's a legend.

  • Un des groupes de légende des eighties..

  • @lleosupercluster

What do you mean "but awful gay video"

What's with the but? You act like there's something wrong with it.

  • i love this song!

the 80's were a fun decade 4 sure!

    mjjfan4ever

  • Jimmy, kocham Twój głos. Jesteś świetnym facetem :)

  • why can't people fuck off and like people who are good rather than what they think is moral or what you should fucking look like or pray to !!!

  • 2:56 John Terry?

  • tis the way it was in 80 britain, much more "homotolerent" now tho

  • best male voice in the golden 80s. and for me one of the top ten songs of all times. people enjoy listening this song

  • @lleosupercluster You're gay! U don't understand the clip..

  • Jimmy Somerville can really hit those high notes, awesome!

  • Old videos were sooo much better than today's ones. More simple, but so awesome, well directed and sometimes with a meaning (like this one). They had that "something" that actual videos don't have.

  • as a youth never had interactions with gay life, just loved it for what is was......a great tune........now being older, and having more education in life, I know its a special track up there in my top 10 xx

  • Supermode- tell me why

  • 3 people are still intolerant ignorants :(

  • I wonder where they ended up?

  • This song is Amazing ....

  • @ipodAirbrush This is the real arts!

  • esta cancion es perfecta la mejor cancion d los años 80 q he escuchado

  • Absolutely bizzarre to think that being gay was illegal back then! (or ever for thet matter)

  • This video always makes me cry ....

  • Listen son, its a classic.

  • ugh, i would like to know who gave that one dislike!

  • @kyungturner daddy's boys of course

  • greatest hit of 80's...

  • I'm lucky that I have a family that is excepting. I'm bi and I have cousins that are gay and we all love eachother. Anyway, when I have children, I will never judge them...never ever...love life no matter...things will work out!!!

  • I just never tire of this song... it pulls out the grief from deep inside me about my dead brother...

  • I just never tire of this song... it pulls out the grief from deep inside me about my dead brother...

  • @fearofablackjanet You know that is an aspect I had never thought of, You are right. It was so new and devistating then that the media and our own governments were all part of this sad part of our history. Gads how the blazes did I not see that. Good eye opener thanks

  • a fkn fiver off his father to beat well done well wi the £5 the auld sod gave you lad

  • I identify so much with this in my own way. Sexuality issues as a youth. Desperately isolated and alone . It still reminds me of a desperately lonely period when i survived and got by. Living in squats at 14 and fending for myself. It made me the successfull survivor i am today and the hard times were all worth it. Pain taught me empathy compassion and understnding at a depth i never thought was possible. I am proud of who i am today and so can we all be if we never give up.

  • Ginger persecution must end.

  • great song, like bassline :-))

  • The sadest part about this video is that it's now 30 years and it still lost nothing of its meaning.

  • @0x777 No it has not lost one thing in its meaning. Hatred and intolerence. Makes me sad to say it but humans are not fast learners. Sure we text and the latest and best tec is at our fingertips and still we create violence to express our deeper feelings. Are we Humans offering the olive branch or swinging it at our enemy in violence and expressing our hate decause of difference. A sad reference to our tomb marker " Here lies the human race, bound for greatness, Died in ignorance. "

  • @0x777 That's what makes music hits endure my friend... A Timeless Message and Universal Meaning that is Ever Present...and always current; no matter what generation, Songs like this will always ring true because they speak to the Basic Human Condition.

  • @0x777 Sad, but true... :(

  • Someone who doesn't appreciate good music. I believe people should be judged on character, not on lifestyle.

  • @0x777 yes, totally agree, though some things have changed for the better - tightning of some legislation, police a bit more clued up....but still a lot of idiots out there.

  • Great song, amazing clip...the days when gays were not yet accepted...and the days of swimming pools in the 80s hahaaa, how much have changed!

  • impresionante temazoooooooooooooo very very nice

  • @qqq1985 ahh its a video not real life...

  • @qqq1985 Shut up--go back to your red neck hole.

  • @qqq1985 Your a sad and angry person, I weep for you and your kind. With hope you will all be a breed soon to

follow the Dodo. People will be judged by the future generations on how they treat others now. Hitler was judged along with the Nazi "Empire" it was a fail, along with you. A HUGE MASSIVE FAIL, I pitty you and your ingnorant attitude.

  • @qqq1985 you're a vile little cretin.

  • @qqq1985 "lol" ing at a harmless lad getting beaten up, and he's the sick one?

  • wot an amazing voice

  • this was the song that accompanied each travel I made to come back by train to my military headquarter after my rare visits at home..

  • This song never gets old for me. I love at the end of the video because he is happy to be with his friends.

  • This song never gets old for me.

  • I was 13 when this came out and as a result so did I in many ways. The tingle; the butterflies; and most of all, the smile it gave me to know who and what I was.

    Thank you!

  • Look at the homophobic father munching his boiled egg. The truth is that he is the one with the issue and not the son struggling with his sexuality. He just needed acceptance.

  • It's a song and video about a gay guy pre-AIDS dealing with coming out. How did that digress into a chat about Judaism? The internet baffles me and never fails to surprise me.

  • Seth Rogan at 2.21

  • this is like one of the best songs ever.

  • I thought this song was about leaving your parents....had no clue he was gay...

  • I do not know why everyone just can't be left alone. Everyone has their own life to live...it is no one's right to judge anyone. No one is perfect in this world.

  • @jacumbia If everyone was perfect it would make for a very boring world indeed. There is only one judge and that is the person you have made yourself. The best part is you have to live with yourself and the world you have made. Anyone can make their own Hell or Heaven on Earth. Its choice and some choose hell and imolate themselves in sweet self hate. Others accept and love others in wonderful self created haven. Living your own life and accepting others is a great start to paradise.

  • I must say I love those childhood photos!

  • Who the f*ck would choose to be gay?! f*cken idiots... it really doesn't take that much mental power to understand--Why would anyone want to be hated?!

  • ***ZooGoooD***

  • Great times, love and miss the 80's

  • what a powerful and sad song

  • wow scotland do make good songs i have to say

  • a very thought provoking video.

  • this for me is the best track of the 80's

  • the song is completely sick but it's a heavy video. thankfully gay people are more accepted today, although it's still hard I'm sure. I won't say I know how it feels because I just don't and it would be patronising to pretend I do.

  • I LOVE THIS TUNE !

  • Brilliant!

  • eminem + R.E.M. singer = Train boy :D

  • @7eK2007 LOOOL so true!!!!

  • I cry everytime I see this heartwrenching video and song and am reliving my tormented youth and the horrors I experienced because of the homophobic nazi racist youth in the place I grew into a man which I finally escape to live free.

  • @freddygoldstein, u accuse others of being nazis, yet u support Israel's atrocities, including cold-blooded murder of 100s of children in Gaza. Suleiman Baraka, a Palestinian astrophysicist working for NASA, wanted to share his home with a Jewish family, so that his kids could play with their kids, so that they would grow up seeing each other as human, but Israel bombed his home, & murdered his 11-yr-old son.

Show me the pictures of Israel's towns being bombed to smithereens - THERE AREN'T ANY!

  • @freddygoldstein, google "Bunche Report on Zionist Terrorism in the Near East". Read up on Jewish terrorism, the 100,000s who illegally entered Palestine, on the Stern Gang, a Jewish terrorist group honored by Israel in 1980, whose STATED goal was to kick the British out of Palestine, flood the country with Jews, & create a Jewish state

Google "USS Liberty BBC Video Dead In The Water - Information Clearing House", a video about Israel DELIBERATELY bombing a US ship, killing over 30 of its crew

  • @freddygoldstein, find out about the Goldstone report, a Jewish Judge whose daughter lives in Israel. His report condemns Israel's actions in Gaza.

Find out about the dozens of UN resolutions condemning Israel that were vetoed by the US.

Search utube for "Rachel Corrie 5th Grade Speech I'm here because I care" - crushed to death by an Israeli bulldozer.

Search YT for "Who Broke The Cease Fire - Hamas or Israel 2008" - Israel!

Israel wants permanent conflict to keep stealing land & resources.

  • @freddygoldstein, the hypocrisy of humans never ceases to amaze me.

  • @freddygoldstein, bombing civilians does NOT win wars, it didn't work in WW2, and it's not going to work in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israel wants permanent conflict, as it provides it with an excuse to keep stealing land - that's why it doesn't care that bombing civilians will never bring about any lasting peace.

Germany carried out the Holocaust, NOT Palestine - go bomb them & steal their land. But you wouldn't dare, because Germany is strong & would destroy you cowardly zionists.

  • @freddygoldstein, people like you love to talk about Israel's right to protect itself, but what about Palestine's right to protect itself in the 1940s? Palestine belonged to the Palestinians, NOT to European Jews. There were very few Jews in Palestine originally.

As that 1948 UN report says: "The Arabs, initially living in peace with the Jewish minority, have been increasingly victimized by the Jews who, now that the British are leaving, are turning their savage behavior against them."

  • @shaunshorn75 There is no such thin as fake "Palestine" and it has always been Israel.Read a book you idot!Arabs that were never there settled in droves after the Jewish ppl liberated their OWN homeland.Palestine is fake as it was always called Israel until the romans conquered her and renamed it.

  • I remember this song, My wife and I were in High school. Some reason we dont remember what the vid ment at the time. Now it seems sad and very wrong. No parent should turn their back on their child. Nobody should be beaten because of their sexuality. Being Gay is being yourself and nobody has the right to tell you, you cannot be you. Bronski Beat, Really a social editorial for the time. Intolerence is a sad angry face to put on. I hope we all do better and deal with others with respect.

  • @tinroofbusted

    You say it completely right!

  • @Machil77 Right is right. A person is just that, a person. We can choose to like them or not. But sexuality should never come in to the equation. Respecting a person with their thoughts and opinions and just the person they are is far more important. I find we make more friends with that thought, More so we have many long term friends then fair weather friends. We are not always liked by our opinions, but we stick by them.

We both have to live with ourselves, We do that very well our way.

  • @tinroofbusted very wrong, no one should love their kids less because of their sexuality.... Sommerville is so cool, some of the coolest people in music business is/ were gay.

  • @Louisefalk78 I voted you up, However you will find that I have and always will along with my wife respect a persons choice first, Just read my comments then you will know what I mean. If we could have had a child we would have respected their choice first and always loved them as our child first. Everyone is and entitled to their own thought and choice in life. Its up to us as Humans to respect that choice and accept it.

Love of people and liberty is to love humanity.

  • @tinroofbusted i too remember when the video first hit the public, didnt know what it was about either, its become more powerful now than ever, my wife remembers it too, we lived across the road and was growing up to the great 80's music, amazing times :)

  • @pandrol7 Strange how we remember the 80s, They were good times, I wish that I had my focus and maturity that I have now back then. However I think that the 80s helped my thoughts in the here and now.

  • @tinroofbusted The 80s hold such fond memories for us precisely because we WAS'NT focused and mature, being young and in my formative teenage years back then makes the 80s feel so much more special and extraordinary to think about now

  • @Insolution55 You may be right, I think I lost my focus for a bit, Life is ment to be enjoyed and lived as a person always. I hope we can all relise this and live well with each other. Think how the world would be if we could do that. It would be a true paradise on Earth.

    Thanks for the little shake.

  • @tinroofbusted Hey you're very welcome

  • @tinroofbusted Wise and very true words..... I agree.

  • everyone of us was gay in the 80s

  • 4:04 10pounds? was that enough for what, back in '84 in the UK?

  • the bit in the vid where his father hands him the cash has always struck me as...beyond sad, really.

so many parents simply have no idea how to handle things like sexuality, mental illness, or anything that sets their children outside the "norm".

and it doesn't mean they don't care, and that's the tragedy

  • My bad, I did not mean to say choose, I just now re read that. My point was a parent should love their children no matter what...simple. A child is not asked to be born, it is the parent's resposibility to give their children unconditional love.

  • sadness and loss distilled into a pop song.

    One of the best.

    pure expression.....

  • The perfect song/video match! Excellent.

  • This vocal will put Farinelly into the shame...

  • Small town ontario here from Picton and feel the song

  • this video is so moving. sure one of the best pop songs of the era but THIS IS A GAY ANTHEM, not just a pop song. The message about intolerance, desire and family is specific to the gay experience and is intrinsic to the power of this song and video. THANK YOU BB~!

  • @jacumbia Very true, i always tell my 3 sons, that i dont care if your the England football captain or a trolly dolly for BA i will always love you the same!!

  • @jacumbia Choose? Do you think I chose a miserable, confusing adolescence?

  • @jacumbia Choose? Do you think I chose a miserable, confusing adolescence? I understand the comment and agree, I just think 'choose' isn't the right word.

  • Comment removed

  • @jacumbia you don't choose whether you are gay or not...

  • @jacumbia Nice sentiment, but people, I don't think CHOOSE to be gay. Why would anyone want to choose a lifestyle that is filled with so much sorrow and hatred from others? Persecution? Misunderstandings? Beatings? Teasings? Death? Please...

  • wow.. the song is.. so sad..
