I'd like to have some 25/75 solder bars too. It would be great to know who makes it for him. I think he even has very large diameter bars so he can put a lot of solder on at once on a bigger job. The info. here is very helpful. A lot of people have the pinhole/pits problem he speaks of, and I'll try using a towel rather than steel wool.
Bill Hines work his magic .. Love watching this man work .. A true master of a dieing craft . The new panel beaters don't have a clue all they do is fill it with bog and plastic .
my dad worked in a body shop in the fifties not a lifer body and fender man , and when i did my mustand he did a little spot with mapp torch an asbestos rag and some 70/30 or 50 50 i forget but plumbing solder...this was in 98' and he didnt neet to file it. a pit or two at most 4 4"x4" spots of welds look like art....i think of him and all the old guys whenever i solder...
oh now i know because of the sanding why he stressed the importance of a water wall!!!
I remember watching Bill Hines work his magic at his small shop on Long Beach Blvd in Lynwood, CA around 1961 when I was 12 years old. Bill did the body and paint work and there was a guy named Martinez I think who did custom upholstery. I used to dig through their trash looking for scraps of naugahyde to use on my model cars.
Lead rules! I used it for the first time on my 84 carrera. Better than plastic filler for obvious reasons - moisture free! Permanent!! Metal to metal!! Bloody hard to do but you feel real good when you stand back and see your handy work. Old school, the best school!
great to see that a legend like Bill is represented on here.. and that even tho the leading has obviously effected his respiratory system (hence the wheezing) he still has his mind even at his age, unlike my 75 yr old grand father thats lost his to alzheimers
A highly skilled art with not many people knowing these days. As u can see health and safety wasn't an issue as he's breathing all the lead fumes, however he's still smoking his cigar and breathing in the toxic fumes but still strong as an oxe and making videos!! Lol thanks for posting this God bless them all.
yeah the crap thing is that not many panelbeating suppliers supply leading supplies anymore due to poisioning still the best way to go you can use respirators these old guys are tough as nuts imune to lead poisoning compared to us soft guys nowadays. I learnt of the old boy at work
Bill Hines, customizing royalty, may he live to be a thousand.
My ole man taught me leading when i was 16, in '98, my first car a 53 plymouth sported '57 packard quarters and frenched lights all done in lead. True guys use lead, bondo is for those who dont care enough to learn the proper way of doing things.
I learned leading at the Mercedes technical school in Stuttgart, W. Germany back in '85. I'll never forget the instructor said "When you fix a Mercedes...it must look like a Mercedes." I've been using lead ever since.....great work guys!
