  • we have been doing this for years now. We have the ziplock containers that we place in a pot cozy and then place it in the side pocket wrapped in a bandana. Within 4 hours its read to go with just a little heating. Another thing we do is smash up all our beans before dehydrating because they become the hardest part to rehydrate somethimes. Its fun experimenting with a dehydrater and making your own meal ideas!

  • we have made our own burritos for the trail, dehydrated refried beans, salsa, and onions. The squeeze cheese in the packets is the only cheeses we have been able to carry.

  • Have you thought about doing this for your cheese?

    Take cheese out of wrapper. Dip in hot parraffin, let cool and dry, then dip again.

    Do this at least 4 times . 5 times is better.

    If the wax, should become chipped at any time , just redip. Store on shelf in cool dark place. Turn every once in a while.

    Will keep almost forever.

    Simply cut into usable pieces - slip a small flat hand held grater into your pack and enjoy some fresh cheese on those burritos!!

  • I have tried a few ideas this was one of them. It did work, and it extended the life of the cheese greatly, another experiment we tried a few years ago. Only problem we had was when on the trail the wax melted and made a heck of a mess LOL. We stick to the cheese packets we get from MRE's I get a steady supply because of my military background and I have a group of boy-scouts in the area that love the things and the jalapeno cheese spread works great for the recipe

  • thank you so much for your idea.i dont back pack but the time will come when all of us "wont" be ready for when the hard time comes. if you know what i mean. people get your self ready it's coming.

  • If you weigh the chili before and after you dry it, the difference is the amount of water lost.

  • i do a similar thing..

    Here's my tip:

    If you get a kitchen scale you can measure the weight before you dehydrate it then subtract the weight after drying. Once you know how much water you need you can measure out the water by weight and get a good approximation of what you will need to re-hydrate it (i usually add a little extra water to make up for what's cooked off).

    I make vacuum sealed bags that all require the exact same amount of water, and mark my canteen cup for that level, I use 1/cup.

  • I don't like the dehydrated hot dogs... but my dogs sure do. They are a classic ring treat for show dogs. They are used as bait to make them stand and to hold their attention when running the ring.

  • Hey there! When you open a bag of oxygen removers, are they supposed to heat up? Miine got really hot to the point I wondered if they might even melt the mylar bags! I look forawrd to your response, and thanks so much for all these great videos!!

  • Yes sarah they are supposed to get warm/hot. They wont harm the mylar.

    I like to dehydrate tomatoes and then make them into powder using my blender. Then, I use them in soups as tomato powder or I reconstitute as tomato paste/sauce and such. It works great.

  • In my earlier comment I forgot to ask you how did the hot dogs turn out. The kids were rushing me out the door to get a video and popcorn. Anyway I would be interested in how this chili tastes and how long can you keep it. Looks good.

  • Yeah,,notice how they werent in the later part of the movie! lol . I ate a few after they dried out. but they didnt taste all that great. The Dogs were to greasy imho. For a weekend trip i would do it,but it took to long. The chili turned out great. I ate half of it while camping a few days after i made the movie. Took about 30 minutes or so before i could eat it but was fine!

  • A piece of fleece cloth and some velcro tape with your sewing machine will make a cloth envelope just about any size for your food pouch. also, the bags that are used with the Foodsaver machines are tougher than ziplock bags.

  • i was gonna take a bunch of cheap can coolers and sew up a dbl layer "bag". I got a bunch free at an expo few years back and they just sit here. Thanks for the idea!!!

  • I wonder which would work better, putting it in hot water and insulating it for hours, or just boiling it in the billy can?

    For the former, I will suggest using a nalgene as your vessel rather than a plastic bag, because of reusability and all that. (I HATE having to deal with garbage on extended trips) That and you can get an insulator MADE to fit a nalgene.

  • I do a lot of long term dehydrating. I got a recipe for dehydrating hamburger off of the endtimesreport(dot)com. They call it hamburger rocks. I (bag) vacuum seal it or put it in a mason jar and vacuum seal it. They say it will keep for years that way. The youtuber yankeeprepper did a vid on dehydrating large piece of very lean meat and then slicing it very thin and then vacuum seal it.

  • Throw the food on a scale before and after to figure the water weight removed to find out how much water to use when you prepare the food.

    Last year I made some rhubarb leather in my dehydrator that was really good. I stewed rhubarb until it was tender, with just a little salt. Then I blended it in batches in the blender, with brown sugar to taste and a little cinnamon, to make a nice, thick sauce. Then I spread it on the fruit-leather trays and dehydrated for a few hours.

    Not a meal, but still something you can take along for a hike or camping trip.
