I live in the Canadian prairies. I see what my neighbors are doing: pissing chemicals everywhere; planting GM crops (cannola); extensive mono-cultures; subdividing acreages out and letting oil companies put wells on their fields; destroying soil fertility by only using N-P-K fertilizers; draining slews, ponds, and chopping down trees so they don't have to turn the tractor around so much, etc etc etc.
It was only 80 years ago the environment bit us in the ass. How long until it happens again?
The images may be old, but the words and sentiments are as timeless as ever. Instead of Dust Bowl, think Hurricane Katrina, foreclosures. bulging homeless shelters, no money for the most vulnerable people in our society.
My grandparents lost everything in the GP, they lived in the worst dust bowl conditions. my dad married and had kids late in life. some people thought he was my grandpa.
He had amazing true stories to tell, and i loved hearing them.
@richardcwood1 How these youngsters know, they were never around during the 1930s. I remember Woody from when I was a boy. If anyone believes anything a Newspaper says, I Ocean Front Property in my Kansas backyard for sale.
That's nice, but Woody Gurthrie was a communist. He is quoted several times about his pro-communist views, his support of unions is staunchly expressed in his music. He was a strong supporter of Russia before the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. He had a column in "The Daily Worker" (A communist newspaper) called "Woody Sez." Of course the best living example of Woody Guthrie's Communism is his good friend and collaborator Pete Seeger; to this day a staunch communist.
Beautiful video. Anyone who championed (or champions) the rights and dignity of ordinary people and their families is labeled as a communist. Whether Woody was or wasn't a communist is neither here not there really - the fact is his music is inspirational and always will be.
@PressPlay2Go Unfortunately, Communist and championing the rights and dignity of ordinary people are not synonymous. People have been, and are duped by that label. Of course, in Guthrie's day, it was a new concept. The problems were complex back then. Still are. Taking away people's individual rights and controlling their every move is hardly the answer.
It was all caused by a scam. The folks that sold them the land knew it was only wet periodicaly, and had long seasons of drought.
At least I think so.
