Look at Tesseract's vocalist. Creative, atmospheric, gritty. Look at Textures' vocalist: High contrast, creative, dynamic, powerful. Look at DEP vocalist: wild, creative, unpredictable, relentless.

Now compare that to Periphery. The man sounds like he belongs in a radio-rock band. You're not serious.

@davidfreilich I think they mix perfectly fine. Mars Volta comes to mind, even though it's not technically a metal band. As long as the vocals are creative. I do prefer a little grittiness to them though, just because my love for prog is rooted in swedish melodeath metal and what have you.
