  • I can't understand the point for the delay between turning the start FPES switch to start and the prime mover beginning turn.

  • All GE haters just heard the sound of a 3+ to 1 better selling product in the last few decades. I love all Locomotives, but would like to remind the typical GE hater that there is a reason Class 1's have chosen them over EMD. It's called "Listen to this video"

  • @iRECKONER lmao

  • Hey could someone give an example of about how loud this sounds in real life when you start up the engine? Like compare it to something with a similar sound level

  • @Trainaholic2946 It sounds like a locomotive starting LOL :) As far as sound level? I guess I would compare it with a lawnmower running with no earplugs, at idle she is not too loud. but give her some fuel :)

  • I HATE the sound of GE locomotives starting...

  • How do you hold a flashlight, a camera, and have a free hand?? LOL

    Keep at it railroader!

  • so what year was the EMD SD40, from the other video? I see the newer one is more quiet the the other ones

  • Im surprised how different this sounds than an EMD

  • Nice video!

  • Wasn't the Dash 9 replaced by another locomotive?

  • @princenoah21

    Yea, the ES44AC

  • @EdEddnEddy4 Hmm, that's what I thought. But I thought they meant that the Dash 9 was retired completely. Glad it's not though. It's awesome

  • anyway a 4 stroke engine has better sound and better power. mostly on diesels.

  • @kdlehel Nothing beats the smooth, deep rumble of a 2-stroke 16 cylinder EMD.

  • @silicon212 yeah weell has grate sound indeed. Are other grate 4 stroke engines with avesome sound like the v320 locomotive or mtu engines. see these you will hear grate 4 stroke orchestra.

  • @silicon212

Except the smooth sound of 12 cylinder GEVO.

  • @EdEddnEddy4 except it's not that smooth. :)

  • @silicon212

Or is it? Either way, it's still a powerhouse.

  • Does this start with electric starters

  • @farmguy2400 nope its AIR start

  • @coops8291 where does the air source come from

  • @farmguy2400 when the loco was running last the compressor filled the tanks with air and the air comes out of the tanks and starts the loco

  • Terrible sounding, Bring on the SD40-2's!

  • i just jizzed in my pantss.....

  • emd used mostly 2 stroke...reasoning... emd is gm electromotive division... gm owns or did own detroit diesel... hence just an overgrown semi truck engine... lmao we have all emd units at my work and my fave is a '49 emd sw1 6 cyl 600 hp.

  • @bariboy167 Actually, Detroit Diesels' two stroke engine was based on the EMD 567, not the other way around.

  • @silicon212 hard to believe that our 2005 Orion VII buses in Toronto had engines that evolved from the 567D...

  • @Train2590 Nope 265-H2 Was a 4 stroke, the only one from EMD's stable. And UP has AC6000 but they are retiring them. Not keeping them. CSX is the only one who intends to keep ALL 6000 HP locos. Just now they will have commonality with the rest of the GEVO's they have.

  • @Train2590 yeah, it seems the only railroad commited to the 6000 HP single engine is CSX and the GE's they bought. They are re-engining them with GEVOv16 6000hp models. The 265H-2 4stroke is shelved for the US, for now (wink wink)

  • @Train2590 Never scrapped it, just (and i quote)"have no outlook for a domestic application at this time" Meaning we make it for china and when they want 6000 HP again we got it.

  • @Train2590 Never scrapped it, just (and i quote)"have no outlook for a domestic application at this time" Meaning we make it for china and when they want 6000 HP again we got it.

  • EMD used both 2 and 4 stroke engines on their loco's it all depends on what the model was and what the customer ordered

  • didnt you make a video on how to start a sd40-2?

  • do these kind of locomotives have engine rooms where you can walk thought them? if not which kinds are those.

  • @CaseyRedDragon The old style GO trains let you walk through them!

  • never heard an engine at first sound like ringing glass bottles on a cold start

  • in england, we call that a local start :)

  • with all diesel train engines, can you start it up and use it right away or do you have to have it idling for a few hours?

  • @InformationCenter

From what I know after starting need to wait for the air tanks to fill before you can release the handbrake, on EMD it takes about 3 mins, unlike car engines they have a oil pressurize system to lube the bearing before you start it, that takes up to 20 mins.

We don't have Alco or GE where I live, just EMD :)

  • They use these beasts a lot hauling two mile long iron ore trains in the north of Western Australia. Can be a team of up to five or six; two in the front, one or two in the middle, and at least one in the rear. Vecause the track isn't dead flat (several hills) there will be times when the head of the train is lower than the back, and it's a balancing act not to derail it

  • I still think the sound of a 7FDL starting up is not unlike the sound of a can full of Lincoln Logs being rattled about.

  • what are those handles on which you are pulling?

  • 4 stroke diesel are used everywhere here in Europe. is more economic and silent and more powerful. I like you movie, i searched after Ge units and you right all GE unit are 4 stroke diesels.

  • I was wondering if any of the major manufacturers of locomotives have ever used Caterpillar engines. I know they have engines that could fill the bill, so to speak, and do a damn good job.

  • @greywolf45 Yes, GE used the Cat-D1700 V-8 engines in their 44toner Switcher Locomotives. Out at the Southern Michigan Railroad Museum we have one with Twin D1700 Cat's, they purr and hum along nicely. GE also had Alco version's for the 44-45-50-and 140 ton Engines.

  • @phildoethedildoe AS far as i can tell, the 3516C is the largest locomotive engine that Caterpillar has available at 2350 hp, although i suspect they have them much larger.

  • @phildoethedildoe I know the larger Caterpillar diesel engines can be adapted for railway uses, and i have seen an SD40-2 (don't know what line ) that has been refitted with a 5000 HP Caterpillar diesel. As to the model, i have no idea

  • @greywolf45 Cat recently purchased EMD, so this will likely become more common.

  • @epistte I know, i had read the news article about Caterpillar buying EMD, but GE built the Dash 9 series locomotives, including this one. I doubt that Caterpillar will discontinue the tried, and true 2-stroke EMD engine though.

  • love it!

  • i love on the older GP engines theres that long crank you have to push and pull while priming the engine

  • The new Dash 9's are crap. The early ones are really good. I like EMD better!

  • impressive, the 7FDL's were the backbone of GE since they start making locomotives, now the evolution series is the new power

  • i love this sound of life in 16 cylinders, it sounds like... power GE's brute force ... Too bad the FDL engine is no longer in production but... GEVO is still a evoluated FDL. good job

  • @thunderstormX92 But those still sound badass when they start. Sounds like a damn monster coming to life.

  • Nice Sounds! I like EMD better though.

  • cor we dont need to do this on BR Locos still it in Engine Only wait 2 minutes and start, still quite hellfire thanks!

  • When did GE's Dash 9's go to 4-stroke engines?

  • as far as i know, they have always used a 4 stroke. EMD uses 2 strokes.

  • @TrainCamera Except the SD-90MAC's they used 4-stroke.

  • @TrainCamera 32 or 24 valve?

  • @TrainCamera This surely isn't an air start as the previous commentor said. Doesn't have that WHOOOOSHHHHHH that the EMD engines have when their pneumatically started.

  • @mattdean1003 This is an electric start. The generator is used to crank the engine..

  • @greywolf45 GE's went to 4 Stroke in late 1985, they always had a 4 cycle engine handy but were not sure they wanted to use it due to the fact it had i low Idle and a hard time starting in colder weather. Their 7FDL16 engine has been a 4 cycle engine the whole way!!. Since their U boats. but GE entered the 21st. Century with their new recreation of the Bessemer Engine into a smaller cleaner and way more efficient version, since then all GE's are now 4cycle.

  • @greywolf45 GE has been 4-stroke from the start.

  • @silicon212 Yes, i know. That's already been explained to me.

  • @greywolf45 GE, have only ever made 4 stroke diesel engines.

  • Nice!

  • Very cool!

  • Amazing 4000 HP!
