when you were talking about sandpaper i started thinking, if you were surviving where there was a bit of sand could you rub the stick on the sand to smooth it down, like sandpaper? or you could gaher some sand on a leaf and rub the leaf on the bow
i love the way u made your bow. i am 13 and have tried to make one for 6 years without luck. i do have an archery instructor who is also my wilderness skills mentor. it be realy cool if you could either make me one or video the whole thing from start to finish. but i would rather u make me one. i am also in the process of getting my hunting license. :D
that was a great video. i really cant wait to try this out for myself, i've made bundle bows before, but i think that that is a lot better way of making a bow. my only question is that, can this work for say; making a bush bow or short bow as well?
One bit of advice i would like to give you is, to get rid of those kinks in the wood etc. all you need to do is set up a fire and gently heat the wood. When you gently heat the wood it allows your to bend the wood into shape.
ya u can get sand paper out there just take birch bark an lather it with pine pitch and dump some sand on it and turn it up side and brush of the sand that did not stick and let it dry
i havent got around to making a bow yet but i just tryed making a wooden arrow, i used oak wood, i got a log about 2.25 feet or so and then cut it down to a square stick and sanded it down tell it was like a regular arrow and then cut a pointy tip and i got the little aluminum or whatever peace of of the back of a pencil that holds eraser on and i made a little end to fit on the string and glued it on, i tryed it on my 20 lb bow, shoots fairly good but shot it on 70 lb bow and it split in half
@Filmskra your best best is to buy some d50 or fast flight but in a survivial cricumstance anything from making your own cordage form plants to dental floss works well
@SantoryuWazamono i left this bow with the son of the outfitter i was hunting with and he told me recently that his son was still shooting it in his back yard. but it all depends on how its stored
@Bowman333334 i used alder, aspen, vine maple, and just about anything you can think of for a survival bow, but if you are building a bow to hunt with that will last a lifetime, hickory, and red oak make good combo
@Bowman333334 make it to what ever poundage you can comfortably hold back, by trimming and tappering a little at a time untill you reach your draw wieght
We make from nuttree , which is a very omogenious wood, light and elastic and the wood must be dry.The ideea in working a bow is that the force has to be from the midlle to the both heads corect share. In the middle this is maximal and to the heads become constant lower.Wood has to follow this priciple. And very carefull not to be thiner sone along the arms, becose ths take a lot of power out throught weaked points.I have one mediumpower wood bow which shoot 200 meters 20 kg force on arow
you sir are evil , not for making a bow to kill animals i have no problem with that . you sir are evil BECAUSE I COULDN'T HEAR A FRAKING THING YOU SAID. jk
@Huntingchannel i'm new to bow making. if it doesn't affect performance too much then i'll give it a shot, nylon string seems to be popular but i can't find it anywhere. what could i use for string? and tell me, i'm making a bow now out of cypress an it doesn't seem to be very flexible, should i continue making it or just ditch the project?
Awesome. And informative. I will definitely be keeping dental floss on my person. And, I guess I could start flossing, too. P.S. the volume is so low.
i used a machete and made a spear like the way you cut this bow down i really dunno what to do with it its about up to my chest height its pretty straight but its a bit heavy and im not sure what i could hunt with it if i cant throw it too far
I started to build some bows on my own kinda like you do it. I was asked, why i removed half of the wood on each side, and i couldn't really answer it.
@TheGavinch believe it or not just spoke to Mike Vuaghn of Olympic Mountain Outfitters i gave the bow to his son back in aug when i built it and he told me that he shoots it everyday. My guess is becuase its so humid in Washington that it hasnt dried out yet. but onces it gets too dry without any sealer on it it will break. or of it stays wet for too long it will rot.
@Huntingchannel sounds like you should treat it the same way as your axe ... never store it inside, always in the basement or a shed, otherwise the wood will shrink and the head will come loose
@neonbluen851 you have to remove the same amount of material from each side for starters. but if you want it perfect you have to use a tillering jig. Or string the bow up and remove material while its under half load/tension and watch the limbs make a uniform arch.

@Saint4Ever37 Most people use compound bows becase as soon as you get to maximum draw length its easier to hold there than recurve bows

back in the old days they cut down staves and wax the ends and leave it for a year to dry out
these days they kiln dry them but thats dangerous because you have warp and split the wood
