  • So in order for me to switch to an octo. i must purchase the sanwa JLF & GT-Y?? Btw it is for my madcatz se stick if this helps any.

  • @DinoZoooTV I believe Madcatz SE sticks can use any of the Sanwa gates out of the box. It just takes a bit more muscle to take off the stock gate from the SE and put in the GT-Y

  • @DinoZoooTV I don't think you need to buy the JLF. The GT-Y should be able to fit on the Madcatz SE joystick.

  • @Santino703 Its just specifically for Sanwa JLF gates. I don't know of any other joysticks that use a similar design.

  • Hello..Can I do this with the square gate in my ssf4 te round2 fightstick too? I'm seeing a lot of videos were people are replacing it with an octagonal plate restrictor.

  • @yiyo556x45 Yes, its the same stick, so it'll work

  • So you mean that the JLF that is in my Hori RAP VX has a restrictor gate that normally is on 4-way but can be set to 8-way?

  • @riky400 No. 4-way/8-way denotes how many directions a joystick can input. All JLFs in any joystick can input 8 directions, therefore being 8-ways. This video is about setting the shape of the restrictor. Normally, on most joysticks available today, it is set to a square shape. This video is for teaching owners how to set it to a diamond shape that may help give a more authentic feel for other games like Pac-Man

  • @TingBoy So, switching the gate to 8-way sets it to a diamond shape? Or, when the stick's out of the box, it's already 8-way?

  • @gold3263301 The stick is 8-way out of the box. Setting it to a diamond shape restricts movement to 4-way.

  • @TingBoy Ah, ok. When I was hearing 8-way, I thought 8-way without all that restriction from a square gate. Maybe I will get an octagonal gate eventually. Thanks.

  • So is it not like having a octagonal gate?

  • @adr916sac without any gate, it'll be circular, however, this may damage the switches over time since I don't think it was made to be played without a gate in the center.

  • can you use the sanwa gt-y restrictor plate on the hori real arcade pro v3 sa

  • @zioncartel Seeing as how the Hori Real Arcade Pro v3 SA uses all Sanwa parts, yes you can.

  • pfff. 8-way restrictor :D

    US newbies

  • Thanks for the vid. I got a restrictor plate but didn't know how to remove the inner octogonal gate so I could replace it with a circular gate. This showed me how. Thank you for taking the time to make and upload this video :P

  • Nice! Anyone have a good explanation of the differences between the JLF and the JLW sticks? Thanks.

  • @TionGoliat No. The stick will always have 8 directions, however, the way you rotate the gate will dictate whether the stick feels like a square or a diamond shape when playing.

  • i have the pos se stick and i'm trying to remove the mounting plate on my stock stick so i can use for my jlf with no mounting plate. can you make a vid please?

  • so i bought the 8 way restrictor plate but i kept the the se sf4 joystick is it recommended i should get a full sanwa joystick or should i be ok with se joystick i dont want it becoming unresponsive i already changed pushbuttons to sanwa

  • @FfantasyF yeah just looked on the site it says they ship Worldwide

  • @FfantasyF i get all my parts from gremlinsolutions and i live in the uk

there reliable ive brought lots of things from theam

  • So this mod makes it better for shooters and pacman?

  • @doro626 Not necessarily better. It gives a more authentic feel for older games I suppose, but it all comes down to preference anyways.

  • @doro626 For shooters, you're better of with a Seimitsu LS-32.

  • @doro626 It would be worse for shooters, -- you need to be able to move diagonally in those -- but better for Pac-Man, Tetris, Super Puzzle Fighter, and other such games.

  • @FfantasyF I'm not really updated on stores in Europe. You can try gremlinsolutions (dot) co (dot) uk. Don't know if they're still active though. Try asking in the tech talk section in the Shoryuken forums.

  • so just like that, it changes to a square gate, to an octaganol gate?

  • @filipinoguy101 No. You need to purchase a Sanwa GT-Y, remove the existing gate, then place the GT-Y in the same slot to make it octagonal. Rotating the existing gate only makes it a diamond gate instead of square.

  • @TingBoy oo ok thx. Do yu know what store would sell those?

  • @filipinoguy101 Lizardlick (dot) com or akihabarashop (dot) jp are both good shops for these types of things

  • @TingBoy aight cool. Thx again man

  • thank you so much :)

  • holy shit...i didnt even kno that.....i just bought a replacement octagonal gate...wish i saw this first.

  • A four way gate can ONLY be used for old school games like Pac-man. Games like Pac-man do not require you to move diagonally.

  • You don t like square gate because you don t know how tu use it.

  • Does the SF4 Tournament Edition comes with this JLF ???.... I just got a TE stick and I don't like the square gate .. Do I have to get a new restrictor plate or can I do this ???

    PLEASE HELP!!!

  • Yes, it comes with the same stick and restrictor plate. The best you can do is either get used to it or buy an octagonal one. I would recommend the former since that is the standard and will be better in the end.

  • @TingBoy your response was kind of confusing..

are you saying, yes, this DOES have that option on the stock restrictor, or, yes, we have to buy one and install it.

  • @thearrah Sorry. I meant yes, all JLFs including the ones in TE sticks have this option on the stock restrictor.

  • @TingBoy is this a good stick for old streetfighter games all i have used in the past is happ arcade sticks want to try something new just by looking at the videos these joystick look cheap. i know nothing about japan sticks help?

  • @soloM81 These sticks are the standard model that they use in most cabinets for fighting games in Japan. They are very sturdy. Definitely not cheap.

Happ users may or may not like Sanwa sticks. Its usually hit or miss. I recommend going somewhere to try it first.

  • @TingBoy is the throw longer or shorter then the happ competition . i like to call short throw joystick cheat joysticks beaues its is easy to pull off the moves faster then long throw. the arcades here are dead cant try the joystick out but is it a good joy for old school streetfighter?

  • @soloM81 It is shorter than the competitions. There's no such thing as cheap. Its all preference. By your logic, pad players would be cheap as well. Anyways, Japanese joysticks were used on older versions of street fighter way before American ever got the game.

  • @TingBoy pads and joysticks are a different ballgame wouldnt even compare them, both are made different but thanks for the info anyway

  • @TingBoy how do we take of the plate? the hole thing from the joystick.

  • what does JLF mean

  • I don't think it stands for anything. Just a model number for the part

  • why would i like to chose 4 way (anyway) if with 8 ways ALL GAMES are compatible with. Even if they are only 4 ways functionable. for example i can play "pacman" with an 8 way joystick... alsmot everithing is playable with 8... so... why the option of 4? never understood

  • For authenticity's sake I suppose. On the older joysticks (like the old Wico's used for Pacman), you could only hit up, down, left, and right.

  • well depends what you play... 4 ways is for fighting games mostly.. thats the japs fav gate, if you play fighting games and you're willing to stick to their level of gaming i say 4 way is the uh. way to go lol.. thats just my opinion you guys say what you want.

  • You're confusing number of corners on a gate vs number of directions a joystick can detect/read.

4 way means you can only hit 4 directions, which are usually up, down, left, and right

8 way means you can hit up, down, left, right, and all the diagonals in between.

What you're referring to is the shape of the restrictor gate. Most, if not all, fighting games use a square gate. I've never heard of any fighting games using an octagonal restrictor gate unless it was played on a custom stick.

  • Yeah the last part is right, the first 3 sentences I don't know, or wait did I posted another comment here on this video? hmm...

  • If you were playing SF4 on a 4-way stick, you wouldn't be able to block low or jump diagonally since 4-way sticks only allow you to do up, down, left and right.

Fighting games are usually played on 8-way sticks that use square restrictor gates. People usually confuse the term "4-way" with the number of corners a square restrictor gate has, which is also 4.

  • ohh I see what you were talking about.. yeah you're right I kinda confused them.

  • I guess its a matter of accuracy with some games like pacman for example the diagonal input would send me on the other direction.not that 8 way its imposible but 4 way sure helps

  • Hitting the diagonals on that diamond is nuts.

  • oh my freakin atheist god!! i never noticed that on my Sanwa. Props man thanks a-lot...

  • This process is so simple, it makes me feel retarded for not being able to figure it out on my own. Thanks man....

  • i don't understand how a square, which consists of 4 sides is a 4 gate, and when rotated 45 degrees, becomes 8 way, even though it's still 4 sides. when i hear 8 way, i'm thinking of 8 points, and when i hear 4 way, i'm thinking of 4 points. b/c it's rotated 45 degrees, magically adds 4 more points for an 8 way? terminology is just awkward...

Octogate you can buy that has 8 points on the plate. Octo = 8. NOT to be confused with 4 way rotated 45 degrees.. Give me a fucking break

  • The number in 4-way/8-way refers to the number of directions the gate allows the joystick to register.

When set to square mode, it can hit up, down, left, right, and the 4 diagonals, making it a 8-way gate.

When set to diamond mode, it can only hit up, down, left, and right, making it a 4-way. I've heard that you can still hit diagonals in this mode, but you need to be way too precise for it to be practical.

  • Ummmm no.

Ok, the video says "how to set the Sanwa JLF to 4-way operation, 8-way operation,..."

I ordered a sanwa JLF and ALL 8 directions work whether square or diamond when I swapped it in my SE SF4 Fightstick. It came shipped as a square so I rotated 45 degrees and tried it as a diamond and all 8 directions still worked, just a matter of preference of where i want my notches, either on the corners or N,E,S.W. Either square or diamond, none was more "precise" than the other.

  • Yes, I already said that diamond mode may still hit the diagonals, but it is substantially harder to hit than in 8-way. It would be too hard to play a fighting game with 4-way. The whole purpose of having the 4-way is to limit the sticks to just ULDR movement for games like Pacman, without having to make/extend the gate (like the blue one on a Seimitsu LS-32-01)

    kowal(dot)itcom(dot)pl/ArcadeParts_pliki/artZESen(dot)htm

Middle of the page where it says JLF. 20% to hit diagonals is just too hard

  • My beef is the terminology with 4 Way / 8 Way. You can still play pacman if it's 4 or 8 and it's totally subjective whether it'd be difficult or not. To me, wouldn't make a difference, may not for others. Pacman: game is 4 directions, joystick does 8, diamond or square. What's the difference? Point it in the general direction and it'll register. Same goes for fighting, all subjective. My friend likes his diamond.

Should be termed "8 Direction Joystick w/ 45 Degree Rotatable Square Gate"

  • Just speculating, but judging by how hard it is to get those diagonals, I'm pretty sure that Sanwa intended it for only 4-way use since other joysticks had similar functions (even Happ sticks). They just couldn't avoid that 20% without having to create another gate.

Anyways, I'm just going with the majority to cause less confusion. Its been this way with the arcade and console scenes for awhile now. Perhaps if Sanwa had gotten rid of that 20%, we wouldn't be having this argument now.

  • Very true TingBoy hahahaha

"8 Direction Joystick w/ 45 Degree Rotatable Square Gate"

  • Comment removed

  • what do these operations offer?

  • 8 way - square - used for fighting games

4 way - diamond - used for old games like pac-man

Of course, you can still play pac-man on the square/8 way setting. Setting it to 4 way just allows the user to get a more authentic feel.

  • i just got gradius V again and mushihimesama thanks for the vid now i can blow my brains out playing them on v hard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Is anyone else having trouble actually turning the restrictor plate? I have the same model of the jlf, but it seems like it won't budge at all

  • Comment removed

  • Read the previous comments....

  • Sorry, Lol, I was in a rush.

  • Quick noob question:

If you dont like the restriction gate and decide to remove it-can the stick still be used without the gate?

How will it feel. I personally like a smooth circle feel to the gate not the squarish type.

  • Yes it can, but it might damage the microswitches. AFAIK, it feels like a smooth circle

  • Is there a circle gate for the JLF?

I should install that instead of removing the gate altogether.

All i've come across is the square and octagonal gates.

Could you give me a link from where I can get a circle gate. Cheers.

  • Other than custom ones made by enthusiasts, no, there are no circle gates for the JLF.

  • Thanks. I'll see what I can do.

  • Would you be able to point me into the right direction re: a circle gate for a JLF enthusiast guide or something?

I bought a JLF & GT-O plate to mod a Hori EX2 and nearly cried when it didn't fit. :(

KoF is so painful with a square gate!

  • Yea. The GT-O is meant for the JLW model, not JLF. There are no guides out there to mod existing JLF gates into a circular one.

I say just embrace the square gate.

  • Actually it's still a 4 way gate, just turned 90 degrees.

  • Indeed. Just call it a square gate to avoid confusion.

  • Not for the JLF, no.

  • I just read a comment from 2 months ago saying it might damage my micro switches is these a round restrictor plate I can buy?

  • Thank you for this I just got a Hrap EX I hated the square gate and the octagonal so, I removed the restrictor comepletely and it is absolutely amazing now espescially for SNK games( the super special commands are a bitch on gamepads lol). I am curious about 1 thing though. Will removing the restrictor wear out my microswitches? I hope not don't think I can go back to gamepads and i've only had the stick 3 days hehe...

  • LOL. Wow, I don't know what to.....wow

Your switches are in for a beating

  • actually i have the octa-gate on order so far there hasn't been any problems I have 4k plus BP lol yea yea that'ts not high only 850 people are better /flex

  • How do I exactly peel the glue off of the connecter. I'm asking this 'cause I'm replacing it with a new stick.

  • I peeled mine off with my fingers. It's not exactly crazy glue. Just your normal hot glue gun stuff.

  • I have a bit of a problem, I want to replace a joystick on a HRAP3 but the connectors are glued together so I can't take it apart and swap a new joystick. Can you help me?

  • Just peel of the glue and the connector will come off easily. It doesn't really need to glue in the first place =\

What are you replacing the joystick with? If you're just replacing it with newer parts, all you need to replace is the PCB and/or the spring, not the whole joystick.

  • Would it be bad to play with out the inner ring on the gate? How would that be different from using a octagonal gate?

  • I would assume that it would damage the microswitches, but some people have done this without problems.

  • The restrictor plate shown in this video is what comes with the JLF. Stock setting is 8way.

  • What's the standard for it? 8way?

I just bought one but i don't know what's in it already.

  • thanks dude, I had no idea how to do that. 4ways is pretty useless for most fighters though

  • I find 4 way to be far superior for fighters, actually. I can pull all of my stuff much more quickly and with more precision.

    It's all personal preference.

  • nice. I had no idea it could do that.

  • 5/5 more like this please
