Whites have nothing to feel guilty about. Their privilege comes from hard work, ingenuity, a more evolved culture, and an average higher IQ. These minorities should be thankful they are allowed to immigrate into a white dominated community. Most other countries in the world are not as accepting as we are to immigration. If they want, they can always return to their respective countries of origin and turn them into something worth living in. We are very generous and they just keep taking.

@freshencounter: Well indeed! What you mentioned is changing since my experience has been quite the opposite in the human service/education field. No doubt it happens due to numerous reasons including "who you know." In my particular field I have noticed that black women tend to hire black women and white women tend to hire white or black women. I have had numerous white males (and some white/black females) tell me that they prefer to have a white male supervisor not a female boss.

@freshencounter ...I don't the concept of the "Other" holds much weight anymore-not are Euro-Americans taught those things you noted. The whole "other" concept can be applied from the other side as well. No all of what Tim says is wrong but his message (the idea of calling privilege white) will cause more harm than good. @freshencounter ..with all the factors you mentioned there are numerous other reasons why those events you mentioned occur. Since I work for the state I have never heard that I make more than black folks with the same skills or educational background. I was turned down for one job and a totally unqualified woman was hired instead (she lasted 5 months)-so all of us have to face some measures of unfairness in our lives. I have never seen black people followed in any store I go onto.

@freshencounter...in the long run labeling a privilege "white" or any other racial color just creates animosity and denial. Even the 10 commandments speak out against "coveting" as opposed to situations which are unjust. As a white person I recognize advantages/privileges inside my own own racial group, some may be justified and some may be unfair and some just are, but fretting about them is useless and accomplishes nothing. Besides, being privileged does not make one a racist.

I really appreciate the story of the Italian person. I'm sure that that person doesn't even know that Italians were not considered white until about 100-150 years ago. @PEB979 I've experienced this. Sometimes it's clearly racist, I won't share some of my experiences here. And, it's a cultural thing I've witnessed and heard many Euro American's practice with each other. I think many are not well mannered because they were trained differently. POC have to be well mannered, we've got a history that includes being killed if we are not respectful to the Euro Americans.

Eh, they have some valid points, but White Guilt will never be the solution. It only adds to Non White Entitlement. The sense that automatically a person who is non White is more pure or good than any White person. It just creates a vicious circle where the abused now become abusers. Me and my parents were Czech immigrants to the US and were dirt poor while we lived there. I guess I might have had a vague privilege by not being suspected of being a criminal, but otherwise, if someone like these suburban yuppies told me that I had it so good because I had "white privilege", I wouldn't know whether to laugh or cry.
I am African...Born and raised there and have actually never experienced open racism until I went to do my first degree in Australia. I shrugged it off but realised when i moved to North America for graduate school that racism really is still alive. This documentary actually explains a lot what we as people of colour go through. I have tried to explain this to my friends who are of European decent and havent been that successful but thank you for uploading this.

I just wanted to share this. I grew up in Seattle, Wa where there was a busing program to diversify the student population and "white guilt" was talked about and taught through our curriculum... How bad white people were for stealing land from the Natives and keeping slaves was shoved down our throats. I learned racism after being beaten up by a black kid in second grade. He called me a "white devil" and was basically the first one to teach me about racism............

My opinion on this topic is that in addition of the presence of white privilege, there has to be an acknowledgment from all races of their privilege. By that I mean, even if the privilege of the Black man or Asian man is that he has the right to be less racially sensitive to other races BECAUSE he's black or asian, and everyone has to take the brunt of that racism just "because", we still all as the diverse human population have to put ourselves in check. No doubt it happens due to numerous reasons including "who you know." In my particular field I have noticed that black women tend to hire black women and white women tend to hire white or black women. I have had numerous white males (and some white/black females) tell me that they prefer to have a white male supervisor not a female boss.

Since I work for the state I have never heard that I make more than black folks with the same skills or educational background. I was turned down for one job and a totally unqualified woman was hired instead (she lasted 5 months)-so all of us have to face some measures of unfairness in our lives. I have never seen black people followed in any store I go onto.

I've seen the resistance simply to the message, the ideas become so quick and incendiary that it is very reminiscent of the fight or flight response. I rarely experience people of European descent asking questions from a place of groundedness. Defensiveness and anger come up, based in fear. I observed this sort of defensiveness in your response.

First of all privilege and racism are not always one and the same but that is how those 2 words have become linked, secondly most white folks don't sit around and add up the privileges they have into separate piles..i.e: here is a privilege I earned and here is a privilege I (we) must have taken from a poc. I think that this concept is destructive for poc's as well since they must now analyze the behaviors, actions and purposes of any white person they associate with. The term Making Whiteness Visible has an evil sound to it a sound much like making Jewishness Visible in the bad old days under Hitler.

I really appreciate the story of the Italian person. I'm sure that that person doesn't even know that Italians were not considered white until about 100-150 years ago. And, it's a cultural thing I've witnessed and heard many Euro American's practice with each other. I think many are not well mannered because they were trained differently. POC have to be well mannered, we've got a history that includes being killed if we are not respectful to the Euro Americans.

Eh, they have some valid points, but White Guilt will never be the solution. It only adds to Non White Entitlement. The sense that automatically a person who is non White is more pure or good than any White person. It just creates a vicious circle where the abused now become abusers. They might not have the same level of systemic power, but in smaller units, yes they can carry a lot of power. And it just ends up validating the very biased fears of White bigots.

I am African...Born and raised there and have actually never experienced open racism until I went to do my first degree in Australia. I shrugged it off but realised when i moved to North America for graduate school that racism really is still alive. This documentary actually explains a lot what we as people of colour go through. I have tried to explain this to my friends who are of European decent and havent been that successful but thank you for uploading this.

I just wanted to share this. I grew up in Seattle, Wa where there was a busing program to diversify the student population and "white guilt" was talked about and taught through our curriculum... How bad white people were for stealing land from the Natives and keeping slaves was shoved down our throats. I learned racism after being beaten up by a black kid in second grade. He called me a "white devil" and was basically the first one to teach me about racism............

My opinion on this topic is that in addition of the presence of white privilege, there has to be an acknowledgment from all races of their privilege. By that I mean, even if the privilege of the Black man or Asian man is that he has the right to be less racially sensitive to other races BECAUSE he's black or asian, and everyone has to take the brunt of that racism just "because", we still all as the diverse human population have to put ourselves in check.
