I've lived in the French Alps, and I must say, you can almost always get down from these peaks/glaciers in 1 day. I guess they stretched the survivalpart a bit because otherwise you'd have a 10 minute show :) Btw, I bought a flint in a North Face shop.

Then please let me know. I know a place where indeed you can walk for a couple of days without seeing a village or road, but that's a plateau at 2300m altitude, so not the height Bear was dropped. I'm still sure that at the altitude he was dropped, you can reach a road in 1 day if you really wanted to. Because almost everywhere in the Alps there are ski resorts near the highest peaks, unless in a national parc, but there aren't that many parcs around. I lived near the Parc des Ecrins.

flints a hell of alot more reliable, it works if wet, lasts about 5x longer than the fluid in lighters do. He usually does have a knife from the few episodes i've watched. the cup will warp and eventually become useless and the chemicals from the metal will seep into your water if you put somethin freezing cold inside and sit it directly on a hotfire. agreed about the making of the fire good point, and ya it gets annoying but think about t elevation and amount of clothing he hs on
